Our second single comes from Strange Boy, a London-based duo with sweeping harmonies and lush techno accompaniment.  Check out their latest offering, “Love Remains.”

Next up is Polychrome, who channel the vibe of The Cocteau Twins to bring us “Dreaming About You.”  If you like electronic, pop and/or dance music, you will love this one.

Our next single, “Thrift Shop,” comes from Johnny and the Bootlegs, who combine blues, punk and rock n’ roll to create a high energy sound.  Please let us know what you think.

Our final single today comes from Summer Heart, and should get  you ready for summer with the amazing “I Got This Thing for You.”

Our first video today comes from Secret Colours for their single “Dream Dream.”  We find it interesting that the album was dropped almost a year ago, and we are just now finding out about them.  We can’t wait for more!

Next up is the latest from LA indie icon Kari Kimmel, with another smash hit video.  This one is for her single “High,” and we can’t wait to find out what music supervisor was smart enough to choose this one.  Her new album drops May 25.

Our third video today is from one of our indie bands, FlecHaus.  Here is the lyric video for “Finding,” which was just released TODAY!

We really love this next video from Lora Kelley for her single, “Both Hands.”  We would love to hear what you think.

Last but not least this week is the latest from amazing duo This Way North.  It is a live performance of their single, “Nothing to Say,” and we truly dig their vibe.  Have a great week and we’ll be back soon with more Get it or Forget it.

Get it or forget it – David Fitzpatrick, Southern Halo, Sideline, Porlolo, Kris Lager Band

Just when we thought we were caught up, we received more than 30 new requests for review for albums being released on or before April 30, a whopping 266 submissions for the first half of 2018.  With today’s five reviews, that makes a total of 226 we have written this year.  It’s quite obvious that indie music is taking over the planet.  With the exception of the new release from the Kris Lager Band, the other four are all being released today.

Artist NameDavid Fitzpatrick

Album NameParachutes in Hurricanes

Label:  Daystorm Music

Genre:  Southern Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Lost on the Same Street; 2.  Long way Down; 3.  Half a Mile; 4.  How I Wish; 5.  All in Tonight; 6.  Your Ghost; 7.  Money Isn’t Everything; 8.  So Happy with You; 9.  Bed of Roses; 10.  If I Could; 11.  Done to Me

Publicist:  Daystorm Music

Review:  Our first impression of the new release from David Fitzpatrick is that he came to rock, southern style.  The sweet sound of “Lost on the Same Street” brings back memories of growing up in the south and listening to the sound of The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynrd and The Doobie Brothers.  Fitzpatrick’s gravelly voice is the perfect fit to the amazing musicianship of his band.  The organ on “Long Way Down” truly makes this cut special, while the guitar and the organ combine to make “How I Wish” equally appealing.  “All in Tonight” has a jazzy vibe that complements their southern rock style.  Other worthy cuts include “Your Ghost,” “So Happy with You,” “Bed of Roses,” and the retro sound of “If I Could.”

Recommendation:  Definitely worthy of addition to your musical library, we strongly recommend you Get this one.

Artist NameSouthern Halo

Album NameJust Like in the Movies

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Pop Country

Track Listing:  1.  Southern Halo; 2.  My Girls & Me; 3.  Notice Me; 4.  I Think too Much; 5.  Tom Girl; 6.  Anything is Possible; 7.  Not Today; 8.  Missing Mississippi; 9.  Famous; 10.  Gettin’ Back Up; 11.  Hey Boy; 12.  Coming Home; 13.  It’s Always Been You; 14.  Just like in the Movies (revised)

Publicist:  So Much Moore Media

Review:  Familial harmonies have always been our favorite, and Southern Halo has them in spades.  Sisters Natalia (guitar), Christina (drums) and Hannah (bass) Morris have all the makings of a family legacy like the Judds, The Kinleys and SHeDAISY, and have been taking Nashville by storm since then were pre-teens.  They released their debut album in 2015, and have returned with their original production team for their sophomore album.  This one is a concept album, and every song works together to produce a record that should be listened to from start to finish, without skipping a single song.  The music is worthy of cross-over, in the style of Taylor Swift, but with the most heavenly harmonies we have reviewed this year.  Radio station managers and music supervisors need to give this band serious attention, especially “Anything is Possible.”

Recommendation:  This is what modern pop country should sound like.  This one is a must for serious music lovers.  Get it Today!

Artist NameSideline

Album NameFront and Center

Label:  Mountain Home Music Company

Genre:  Bluegrass

Track Listing:  1.  Thunder Dan; 2.  Frozen in Time; 3.  Old Time Way; 4.  Song for a Winter’s Night; 5.  Bluefield WV Mtn. Girl; 6.  I Long to See His Face; 7.  Lysander Hayes; 8.  Memories that we Shared; 9.  Something out of Nothing; 10.  All Because of Me; 11.  Satan’s Chains; 12.  Cotton Eyed Joe

Publicist:  So Much Moore Media

Review:  Sideline is a cross-between the bluegrass stylings of Rhonda Vincent & the Rage (but with a male vocal) and the country sound of Alabama and Shenandoah.  The songs are very radio friendly for classic country and Americana, and should play extremely well to fans of  those genres, in particular the amazing track, “Frozen in Time.”  This is the band’s fourth studio album, and the chemistry is evident from the first note.  The band’s bluegrass roots are truly shown on the tracks “Old Time Way,” with its amazing mandolin, banjo and acoustic guitar picking, backed up by some incredible fiddle, and “Lysander Hayes.”  Other cuts worthy of your time include “Song for a Winter’s Night,”   the gospel songs “I Long to See His Face” and “Satan’s Chains,” “Something out of Nothing,” and their instrumental cover of the traditional bluegrass tune “Cotton Eyed Joe.”

Recommendation:  If you love classic country, bluegrass or Americana, then this one belongs in your music library.  We think you need to Get it immediately.

Artist Name Porlolo

Album Name Awards

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie/Folk Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Wasting Time; 2.  I Don’t Want to Lose; 3.  Awards

Publicist:  Noisy Ghost PR

Review:  Colorado project Porlolo, a combination of vocalist Erin Roberts and guitarist Tom Moore, plays music that mixes Americana, indie and folk rock with melancholy lyrics that grab hold of you and make you empathize with the song.  The current line-up also includes Ben Desoto on drums and Anna Morsett on bass, and is truly worthy of industry attention, especially in the fast-growing Americana genre.  All three songs are wonderful.  Our only regret is that the EP is too short and barely whets our appetite, leaving us wanting much much more.   We also advise music supervisors to check out these tracks because they would do great as placements in television and film.

Recommendation:  This band is amazing and this short 3-song EP is the perfect appetizer for the awesomeness we are sure is yet to come.  Grab it now.

Artist NameKris Lager Band

Album Name Love Songs and Life Lines

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Soulful Rock and Boogie

Track Listing:  1.  Aurora Borealis; 2.  The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants; 3.  Sweet Magnolia; 4.  I Wanna Hold you in my Arms; 5.  San Francisco Bound; 6.  You Know I Love  You; 7.  Pickin’ up the Pieces; 8.  You and I; 9.  Where the Green Grass Grows Tall; 10.  Guiding Light; 11.  I’m Still Here and I Ain’t Lettin’ Go; 12.  I’ll be Thinking of You; 13.  That’s What Love Is; 14.  Journey’s Sonata

Publicist:  Frank Roszak Promotions

Review:  The album kicks off with the spirited instrumental “Aurora Borealis” before giving us the first glimpse of the unique vocals of Kris Lager on “The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants.”  His style is a mix between Bob Marley and Bob Dylan, and is perfectly suited for this “feel good” musical vibe.  Check out the stirring “Sweet Magnolia,” the soulful and inspirational “I Wanna Hold  you in my Arms,” the upbeat boogie tracks,”San Francisco Bound” and “You and I,” the down home Americana sound of “Where the Green Grass Grows Tall,” the bluesy sound of “Guiding Light and “That’s What Love is,” and the closing instrumental “Journey’s Sonata.”

Recommendation:  Don’t miss this one.  Get it before it’s gone.

Michael Peterson returns to drink swear steal and lie

Yesterday we shared our interview with country music great Michael Peterson to catch you up on what he’s been up to these past 20 years since he burst onto the country music scene with an album that spawned three #1 hits.

His latest album has just been released, entitled Drink Swear Steal & Lie.  The title track was one of those three earlier hits.  The album was produced by pop songwriting legend Steven McClintock, with the assistance of country music legend Billy Yates, and released on McClintock’s 37 Records label.

Peterson assembled some of the best players in Nashville for this project, including Eddie Bayers on drums, Eli Beaird on bass, Troy Lancaster on electric guitar, Scotty Saunders on steel guitar, Larry Beird on acoustic guitar, Larry Franklin on fiddle and Steven Nathan and Buddy Hyatt on keys.  Michelle Poe, McClintock and Yates provided backing vocals.

Artist Name:   Michael Peterson

Album Name Drink Swear Steal & Lie

Label:   37 Records

Genre:   Country

Track Listing:   1.  Lookin for Love; 2.  Wichita Lineman; 3.  The Most Beautiful Girl in the World; 4.  A Boy Named Sue; 5.  Friends in Low Places; 6.  When the Bartender Cries; 7.  Mama’s Don’t let Your Babies Grown up to be Cowboys; 8.  Drink Swear Steal & Lie; 9.  From Here to Eternity; 10.  Too Good to be True; 11.  Borderline; 12.  I’m my own Grandpa (bonus track)

Publicist:   Self-promoted

Review:  Michael Peterson is an award-winning country artist, who hit the top of his game on his first release on Warner/Reprise back in 1997, garnering three #1 hits, and five Billboard Top 40 hits, among other accolades.  He has now joined the ranks of indie artists with his latest album, which has already produced a #2 song (“Lookin for Love”) as well as the current #1 (“Drink Swear Steal & Lie”) on the European charts.  “Lookin for Love” has now been released in the United States as well.

What we love about this album is that Peterson has combined his tunes (including previous #1 hits “Drink Swear Steal & Lie” and “From Here to Eternity” with new songs “When the Bartender Cries,” “Too Good to be True” and “Borderline (written by producer Steven McClintock)) with his interpretations of classic country hits like Johnny Lee’s “Lookin for Love,” Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman,” Charlie Rich’s “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” Johnny Cash’s “A Boy Named Sue,” Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places” and the classic Waylon Jennings/Willie Nelson smash “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys,” which was in itself a cover of the original Ed Bruce tune.  Peterson joins with producer Billy Yates on the duet, which makes this version a classic in its own right.

This is truly an album for all lovers of classic country music, and should easily restore Peterson to the top of his game.  The album even includes a bonus track, featuring Peterson on the classic 1947 Lonzo and Oscar novelty song, “I’m my Own Grandpa,” which was made famous by Ray Stevens.  Peterson’s version was recorded live during his performance at Branson, Missouri.

Recommendation:  You can’t miss with this one.  If you love classic country music, then this one is a MUST for your collection.  Get it today!

Artists Worth Checking Out Interviews

Catching up with country artist Michael Peterson

Twenty years ago you couldn’t turn on country radio without hearing the strong voice of Michael Peterson.  Like many of his peers, he was a victim of the major labels’ quest for more profits.  Fortunately for music lovers, he has just released his first indie album, and is giving this new music generation a taste of his greatness.  Before we review his album tomorrow, we wanted to spend some time and catch up with him.  Here’s our interview.

IVB:  What is your background?

MP:  I was born in Tucson, Arizona and raised in Richland, Washington, where I was an athlete and a singer in high school.  I was offered scholarships for both music and football at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and I chose football.  Our team became the 1980 NAIA Division II National Champions. Ironically, that decision opened the door to my career in the music business when a team mate married pop star Deniece Williams (“Let’s Hear It For The Boy”), who signed me to my first publishing/management and record deal.

I started going to Nashville in 1988, and moved there in 1996.   I got a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music in late 1996 and my record deal with Warner/Reprise in 1997.  The first three singles off that album went #1 on CMT, as well as made it to the Tot Ten on Billboard.  I was the top new airplay artist of 1997 and the top selling new male artist of 1997-1998.

I was a finalist for both the 1998 CMA “Horizon Award” and the ACM top new male artist of 1998.  I was the recipient of the TNN/Music City News (now the CMT Awards) “Star Of Tomorrow” award and Country Weekly Magazine’s “Golden Pick” award for the best new male artist of 1998.

Currently, that first album I released on Reprise is only 18,000 units or so away from 1 million in sales.  The 18 albums I have released so far in my career have sold about 1.3 million copies.

IVB:  What was the music scene like back in the early 2000’s as opposed to today?

MP:  When I started in the music business in 1985, cassettes were the new technology. Hahaha.

Back then, the dream was to get signed by a major label and build a career with their help.   Nowadays, the dream and effort of young artists is to get 5 million streams on YouTube for a video you shot on your iPhone.  Major labels are still important to artists’ careers, but Indie artists have so many more opportunities to find an audience than ever before.  It is exciting!

IVB:  Remembering when we first met back at Fan Fair, how has that event changed?

MP:  FAN FAIR – What a fun time.  So glad I got to experience that.  It was at the Fair Grounds (in Nashville) and it felt like a fair.  It was all in one place and that made the event feel more like a reunion of sorts.  I loved it.  Nowadays, the CMA Music Fest feels like a “BIG TIME” event.  So fun to see country music become so popular that it grew to such an enormous platform.  I have loved experiencing both.

IVB:  Why did you decide to make your comeback as an indie artist instead of going back to a major label?

MP:  It is a great time to be an “Indie Artist.”  The previous stigma many indie artists felt is eroding because they are succeeding in greater numbers than ever before.

IVB:  How did you connect with Steven McClintock?  Was his pop music background a challenge or a help?

MP:  Steven McClintock and I have known each other for nearly 20 years.  When it came time to make this new record, he and I had already been speaking about working together.  I’m so blessed to be working with him.  His depth and breadth in many genres of music gives him a real advantage when it comes to marketing the album, which we produced together with Billy Yates.  Steve is an amazing guy with a great track record of success as both a writer and publisher, and I see us doing a lot together in the years to come.

IVB:  What are your current plans to promote your new album?

MP:  Our first single on the HOT DISC Chart in Europe was my remake of the classic Johnny Lee hit, “Lookin For Love,” which spent 10 weeks in the Top Ten before peaking at #2, where it stayed for two weeks.  My second single is my former #1 hit, “Drink Swear Steal & Lie,” which debuted at #24 before jumping to #4 the second week.  We just found out that it went to #1 today (April 24)!

We are planning to release several more singles off the album for the European market as we head towards a month long tour of Europe in August.  We are currently scheduled to perform in Poland, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.

Here in the States, we just shipped “Lookin For Love” on CDX, and already have 36 stations playing it after just two weeks, a great start.   We have a lot of great songs on this album and we look forward to playing a LOT of shows in the next two years to share this music with the fans of classic country music.

The album is now available on nearly every major platform.  You can purchase physical copies, download it or stream it on Apple Music, Amazon, CD Baby, iTunes, Spotify, and my label’s website.  It’s pretty exciting!

IVB:  What are the best ways for your fans to connect with you?

MP;  I LOVE connecting with the people who are enjoying the music. These days the best ways to connect with me are through my Facebook page, as well as on Instagram.

Monday mashup 2018: vol. 16

April is winding down and summer will be here soon (we hope!).   Here is the latest indie news, as well as some new singles and music videos which have been recently released. Have a great week and come back tomorrow for our interview with acclaimed country artist Michael Peterson.

HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL

The 9th annual Hollywood Fringe Festival runs June 7-24, with previews running the week before.  Check their Facebook page for pre-festival events, and mark you calendar for May 1, when tickets go on sale for this year’s event.  We will be there from June 12 to the 25, and can hardly wait.  Hope to see you all around LA.

LA MUSIC CRITIC AWARD WINNERS SHOWCASE

Plans are complete for this year’s showcase, which will be held on June 19 at the Mint on Pico Boulevard.  Tickets go on sale on May 1, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.  Come out and support indie music and support our most worthy charity.  We have some great plans for the evening, including the bestowing of the 2018 Icon Award, so don’t miss out.

NEW SINGLES

Up first this week is the latest from the soulful Sam Hammerman, with this masterful song “Miss the Days.”  It is a sweet and smooth way to start your week, so check him out.

Next up is an indie rock tune from South Village, an Australian band from Melbourne.   We think you will like these guys, who are reminiscent of the Gin Blossoms.  Here’s “Say it Now.”

Originally signed to Elton John’s Rocket Records, UK standout Johnny Stimson reveals his first single with “End of Time.”  It is a dreamy pop song that will give you chills.  Please let us know what you think.

https://soundcloud.com/antifragile_music/end-of-time-johnny-stimson/s-wLpLJ

Our fourth single today is a special preview and comes from Canadian troubadour Craig Cardiff, who brings us a double dose of his song “Okay Cupid.”    We love the instrumentation, and the smooth voice, which reminds us of Cat Stevens.  Watch for its release next Friday, April 27.

Our final single today comes from Lachlan Vines, an artist we featured last year.  Here is his current single, “Take it Back.”

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first one today comes from Grammy-nominated blues artist Janiva Magness, and is a lyric video for her protest song, “Home.”  We think this one will give you the strength and resolve to stand up for your beliefs.

Next we travel to Amsterdam for Not.Your.Regular.Boy‘s latest video for “Crazyland.”  This one has enough energy to get your going strong this week.

Our third video today is one of the most creative we have viewed since Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way you Are.”  Check out the amazing artist Andy Sydow and his hand-drawn animation for “Reasons for Departure.”

Fourth on our list today is from the groovalicous sounds of ellee ven.  The cinematography on this one is delicious, and the story is well told.  Check out “For Your Love.”

Last but not least this week is the latest powerful video from multi-award winning Americana artist Alice Wallace.  Check out her moving female empowerment video for “Elephants.”

Get it or forget it – Bush Tetras, Kathy and the Kilowatts, Added Color, A Big Yes and a small no, Only Bricks

TGIF and happy 4-20.  Time to relax from this crazy week and get ready for the weekend.  Here are five more great artists to check out and hopefully find what you need.

Artist NameBush Tetras

Album NameTake the Fall

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Post-punk

Track Listing:  1.  True Blue; 2.  Red Heavy; 3.  Mouse; 4.  Don’t Stop It; 5.  Out Again

Publicist:  Promo Juke Box

Review:  Bush Tetras have been a fixture in the underground music scene in New York City since the 80’s, and with their latest EP, prove that they are still as relevant as ever.  Lead vocalist and co-founder Cynthia Sley does just that with her amazing voice, which sits perfectly on the powerful slide guitar and the enormous beat of the drums.  Punk lovers everywhere are going to want this exciting piece of music in their personal libraries, as the band proves that they truly know how to rock it, punk style.  Every song is powerful, but our nod goes to the title track, “Red Heavy,” and “Don’t Stop it” as the best on the EP.

Recommendation:  Punk and rock lovers will find it a necessity to Get this one.

Artist NameKathy & the Kilowatts

Album NamePremonition of Love

Label:  Nola Blue Records

Genre:  Blues

Track Listing:  1.  First do no Harm; 2.  Premonition of Love; 3.  Beggars Can’t be Choosers; 4.  Always Fooling Me; 5.  Grow Some; 6.  Black Nights; 7.  What Have I Done Wrong; 8.  Final Verdict; 9.  Sugar Bee; 10.  Answer Yes; 11.  All These Questions; 12.  I Got This; 13.  The Bigger Picture

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  In the light of the #MeToo movement, there has been an increase in the creation of music that empowers women.  To our knowledge, though, this is the first time we have heard that type of music within the blues community.  Kathy Murray has overcome a childhood of abuse and bullying to become a powerful blues singer, and has created a masterpiece of empowerment to share her status as an overcomer.  Her musical style, which was born during Austin’s  blues boom, incorporates the best of the Texas blues with just enough traditional and contemporary blues to highlight her uniqueness.  From the first notes of “First do no Harm” to the final downbeat of “The Bigger Picture,” Murray and the Kilowatts  bring us upbeat songs that strive to bring victory to a battle that has been ranging for far too long.  These are songs that are meant for a worldwide audience, and deserve industry attention, both for radio airplay, and placement in television and film.  Not only is the guitar work dominant in these songs, but the horns, and Murray’s voice, lift these tunes to a new dimension, setting the bar to a very high level indeed.

Recommendation:  Don’t wait another moment – Get this one now and put it on repeat.  You’ll feel better just by listening.

Artist NameAdded Color

Album NameMr. Industry

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Alt Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Panic Attack; 2.  Mr. Industry; 3.  Just Because; 4.  Same Place; 5.  Out of Control

Publicist:  Behind the Curtains Media

Review:Brazilian/American power rock band Added Color is taking New York City and Brooklyn by storm as their funk-infused brand of alternative rock takes over North America.  They rock like there’s no tomorrow, with well-crafted lyrics and music and vocals that deliver every word in such a way that you will never forget the message, especially the hard-hitting diatribe against the music industry contained in the title track.  Their first single, “Same Place,” has already spawned a stellar YouTube video, while “Just Because” is fast becoming their most popular stream.  If the time has come to crown a new king of rock and roll, then Added Color has our vote.

Recommendation:  If you love rock, then this one is a no-brainer.  You simply must Get it today.

Artist NameA Big Yes and a small no

Album NameMise En Abyme

Label:  Royal Potato Family

Genre:  Indie Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Mise en Abyme; 2.  Don’t Pull it Out; 3.  Stranger Things; 4.  Amazing Grace; 5.  Enough is Enough; 6.  I’m Gonna Die; 7.  We Talk too Much; 8.  Photo Finish; 9.  Heather

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  Whether you call it shoegaze, indie pop, or just plain different, the music of Kevin Kendrick aka A Big Yes and a small no is unlike anything you may have heard from now.  It might be his background, which includes surviving a kidnapping and numerous muggings, his victory over heroin or his insanely talented and creative brain that have resulted in music that defies categorization into any one genre.  The album starts out with some amazing acoustic guitar underscoring soaring vocals on the title track, and then proceeds to go higher on each track that follows, like the keys and electric guitar on “Don’t Pull it Out,” or the stirring truth of his biographical song, “Stranger Things.” with some amazing organ and trumpet.  We also love his stirring cover of the classic hymn “Amazing Grace.”  Regardless of your style of music, you will find something to love on this album.

Recommendation:  This one is a superb effort and belongs in your library.  We highly recommend you Get it.

Artist NameOnly Bricks

Album Name:  Foundation

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Twisted; 2.  (Your Love Gets Me) High; 3.  Helpless; 4.  Hello Goodbye; 5.  Afterthought; 6.  California; 7.  Get on the Floor

Publicist:  Far Digital PR

Review:  Los Angeles has spawned a number of great pop bands, and Only Bricks is the next in line.  The sweet vocals of Anne DiGiovanni, combined with the musical genius of her husband, Joseph Lewczak, create music that is a sheer joy to behold, and makes you want to get up and boogie.  We were hooked from the first notes of “Twisted,” a song which could be a mega hit on Top 40 radio.  Their tongue-in-cheek anti-drug tune “(Your Love Gets Me) High” is the perfect theme song for the movement, and could definitely get us high from the sheer sweetness of the song.  “Hello Goodbye” is our new jam, and we seriously love this song.  There is not a bad song on the EP.  We only wish we could be at The Peppermint Club in Los Angeles tomorrow night (April 21) for the EP release show.  If you live in the area, we STRONGLY urge you to get out there and support this amazing duo.

Recommendation:  Sorry Katie, it looks like your reign as the Queen of Indie Pop has hit a snag – Anne DiGiovanni and Only Bricks have staged a coup and taken over your throne.  This guys are unbelievable – Get Foundation today!!!

Get it or forget it – Bay Station, Young Galaxy, Jaunt, SAYERS, Rachael Cantu

Today is a very historic date.  Growing up, it was remembered as the day they started the American Revolution.  Unfortunately, in the past few years, it has transformed from a celebration of freedom to a memorial of horrible atrocities.  Sounds like a good reason to check out some indie music and make our own history.  Here are five more for your reflection.

Artist Name Bay Station

Album NameOther Desert Cities

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Americana

Track Listing:  1.  Sleeping Hard Waking Slow; 2.  Look but Don’t Touch; 3.  Fire Song; 4.  Sands of Time; 5.  Everybody’s Business; 6.  Baja Blues; 7.  Purple; 8.  Clean Up; 9.  Trickster Moon; 10.  Bay Station Wiggle

Review:  The San Francisco Bay area has a surprising number of really good Americana artists, including the multi-award winning Katie Garibaldi and Jeffrey Halford and the Healers.  You can now add one more to that list with Bay Station’s release of their third studio album, Other Desert Cities.  Between the amazing vocals of Deborah Crooks and the equally awesome musicianship of her bandmates, Kwame Copeland, Steve Waters and Chris Veenstra, Bay Station delivers its own unique style, incorporating the best parts of Americana, Alt-Country, and just plain good storytelling.  These songs will grab you with their sound, but truly capture your attention as they sing about what it must be like to live in the desert, from both the viewpoints of visitors, residents, and native animals.  Best songs include “Look but Don’t Touch,” “Sands of Time,” “Everybody’s Business,” “Clean Up,” and the unforgettable surf rock sound of “Bay Station Wiggle.”  This one is sure to make your day.

Recommendation:  This album is a most worthy addition to your musical library.  Get it today.

Review:  Montreal continues to deliver great indie music with the latest release from Young Galaxy.  We have loved sharing some of the previous material (including their latest music video for “Frontier), and are excited to review the complete album for you.  Their harmonies are sublime, with amazing musicianship underscoring those great vocals and lyrics.  Their sound is unique, combining elements of indie rock, 80’s percussion and amazing storytelling.  Our favorite tracks include “Under my Wing,” “Catch Your Breath,” “River,” “Frontier,” “Stay for Real,” and “Elusive Dream.”  Ride the wave and chill to the sound of Young Galaxy.

Recommendation:  This one is a must for your chill time.  Get it while you can.

Track Listing:  1.  Machined; 2.  Best Case; 3.  Intimate Sunset; 4.  Faster Interactions; 5.  Cued

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Jaunt is a Toronto-based boy band that has collaborated with incredible vocalists Caitlin Woelfe-O’Brien (aka Blunt Chunks) and Eliza Niemi to create seamless chill tunes with amazing vocals and harmonies.  The sound is so smooth that you will be relaxed before the first tune is over.  The music is breezy and light, flowing over you like a river of sound.  All five songs are perfect for creating a relaxing mood, and will have you pressing repeat so you can listen again and again, especially the final track, “Cued.”  Just for fun, check out the music video for “Faster Interactions” on YouTube.

Recommendation:  If you enjoy smooth relaxing music as part of your chill routine, you can’t go wrong with Jaunt.  Get em while they’re hot.

Artist NameSAYERS

Album NameHorror Stories

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  The Arsonist; 2.  Get Naked; 3.  Headache Mind; 4.  Reno; 5.  Push Pull Cave Control; 6.  Norman’s Girls; 7.  Nothing New

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Indie Rock has a new champion, and it’s name is SAYERS.  This fun band from Chicago hasn’t forgotten that playing and creating music is not work, but something that everyone would love to do.  The guitar work throughout is stellar, as are the strong vocals that soothe as they entertain.  The first two tracks (“The Arsonist” and “Get Naked”) have been released as singles, and “Get Naked” is the best of the two.  This band doesn’t quit delivering, and “Headache Mind” shows just have great an indie band can be.  Other great songs include “Reno,” with its driving beat and impressive guitar, and “Norman’s Girl,” with its psychedelic 60’s groove.  The album closes with the amazing “Nothing New,” which is a great party song reminiscent of the B-52’s and deserves radio airplay.

Recommendation:  You should definitely give this one a chance.

Artist NameRachael Cantu

Album NameLove Rush

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Pop Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Run Free; 2.  You’re the Most; 3.  Pieces; 4.  Long Time Lover; 5.  Won’t let you Go; 6.  Love Rush

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  The beat grabs you and then that voice just washes over you, enveloping  you in the raw emotion and power of a love rush.  Rachael Cantu has the “Hotel Cafe'” sound, so it is only fitting that her EP release show should be held there on April 28.  If you are in or near Los Angeles, we STRONGLY encourage you to go to the show – we definitely would if we weren’t in Montana!!!  Cantu’s songs are truly radio friendly, and also should be carefully considered by the music supervisor community, as they would work extremely well as placements in television and film.  “Run Free” could be a monster hit, so radio programmers, stand up and take notice of this amazing indie artist.  It won’t be long before Cantu and Sara Bareilles are used in the same sentence – this is an artist about to break.

Recommendation:  Don’t waste any time – you simply must Get this one today.  You will not regret it.

Get it or forget it – Kid Ramos, 0 Hype, Katie Vincent and the Pickings, Vickers Vimy, Febueder

Happy Wednesday – hope you got your taxes all done and are ready for some great indie music to relax with and enjoy.  Here are five artists for your consideration.

Artist NameKid Ramos

Album NameOld School

Label:  Rip Cat Records

Genre:  Blues

Track Listing:  1.  Kid’s Jump; 2.  All Your Love; 3.  Tell me What  you Need; 4.  Mashed Potatoes and Chili; 5.  Heartbeat; 6.  You Never Call my Name; 7.  Anna; 8.  Wes Side (Bumpin’); 9.  Mona Lisa; 10.  Jesus Come by Here; 11.  I Can’t Wait Baby; 12.  Weight on my Shoulders; 13.  Society Woman

Publicist:  Frank Roszak Promotions

Review:  The album is aptly named, as Kid Ramos delivers traditional “old school” blues, kicking off with the instrumental “Kid’s Jump,” before delivering the truly soulful sound of “All Your Love.”  The pure sound comes from the recording process, which used all analog equipment under the watchful eye of Jon Atkinson, who also contributed some vocals.  Other brilliant musicians on the album included Kedar Roy on bass, Marty Dodson on drums, Bob Welsh on piano and organ, Danny Michel on second guitar, while Johnny Tucker and Kim Wilson contributed stellar vocals.  Check out the “dirty” vocals on “Tell me What you Need,” “You Never Call my Name” and “I Can’t Wait Baby,”  and the sterling instrumental performances on “Mashed Potatoes and Chili,” “Wes Side (Bumpin’)” and “Weight on my Shoulders.”  “Heartbeat” and “Mona Lisa” have that 50’s feel like Bobby Darin, while “Society Woman” is the perfect closing song, with its mixture of traditional blues guitar and vocals.

Recommendation:  This one is definitely for the traditional blues lover, who need this collection for their musical library.  We highly recommend this one.

Artist Name0 Hype

Album NameBefore you Enter

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Hip-hop

Track Listing:  1.  647 Cypher (intro); 2.  Ease my Mind (ft. Chris Chand); 3.  Goldschläger; 4.  Green; 5.  Defeat; 6.  Somebody; 7.  Foreign; 8.  Conflict!; 9.  Last Night (ft. Kholor); 10.  Rave; 11.  4 U (interlude); 12.  Ginsberg; 13.  Intoxicated; 14.  Knock Before you Enter

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Rudi Jubran, aka 0 Hype (as in zero) is the indie version of television’s Hakim Lyon, a hip-hop/rapper who knows how to create memorable music with his mixture of slow jams, smooth vocals and spitting words that leave a lasting impression on the listener.  Check out the 20’s vibe of “Goldschläger,” which transports you in and out of your favorite speakeasy.  “Somebody” is another smooth jam, as is “Foreign,”  while “Last Night” brings in some impressive African percussion before returning to the smooth sound of “4 U (interlude).”  The album culminates with the haunting and eerie sound of “Intoxicated,” which definitely belongs on the aforementioned Empire, and the equally well-crafted title track.

Recommendation:  If you love cutting edge hip-hop, then this is the album for you.

Artist NameKatie Vincent and the Pickings

Album NamePickings (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Singer-songwriter

Track Listing:  1.  Demon Queen (dialogue); 2.  Trouble Is; 3.  Penitence; 4.  Hello June Bug (dialogue ft. Julia Piker); 5.  The Way it Goes; 6.  Blame It; 7.  Man of Constant Sorrows (ft. Bill Turner); 8.  Trouble Is

Publicist:  EMPKT PR

Review:  Katie Vincent is best known as an actress, writer and producer, but is also a musician who contributes her original material to her independent film projects.  On the Soundtrack album, she contributes five tracks, with the strongest one, “The Way it Goes,” also being released as a single.  Vincent has a striking similarity to the sound of Lydia Loveless, and should definitely investigate the Americana scene if she wants to continue to grow as a musician. We also think that the final track, “Trouble Is,” deserves a full treatment, as it could be a break-out song.

Recommendation:  Give this one a spin.

Artist NameVickers Vimy

Album NameAtlas of Hearts

Label:  Vickers Vimy Music

Genre:  Folk/Celtic

Track Listing:  1.  Bonfire of Dantes; 2.  Chicago; 3.  Budapest; 4.  Helicopter; 5.  Mermaid of Luna Park; 6.  Peg and Hammer; 7.  A Quiet Bow; 8.  Atlas of Hearts; 9.  Red Moon Rising; 10.  Keep Your eye on the Road

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  How can you describe the wonderful sound of Ireland’s Vickers Vimy?  It is a mixture of different cultures, with amazing horns, soaring vocals, and lyrics that tell beautiful stories.   The first track, “Bonfire of Dantes,” would have been at home as part of the soundtrack of Pulp Fiction, while “Chicago” brings home their Celtic tradition, with a stirring fiddle that truly makes the song perfect.  “Budapest” is a more traditional song with equally beautiful string arrangements, which are also very evident on “Helicopter.”  Other great songs include “Mermaid of Luna Park,” “Peg and Hammer,” the title track (with its traditional Celtic sound), and “Red Moon Rising.”  The album closes perfectly with “Keep Your Eye on the Road,” which leaves us only wanting more.

Recommendation:  This one is a definite keeper.  We highly recommend you Get it.

Artist NameFebueder

Album NameAll a Hoax

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Alternative

Track Listing:  1.  Then There Were Two; 2.  Hans; 3.  Paramount Tether; 4.  Santorini; 5.  Belgium Travel

Publicist:  SMT Artists

Review:  They hail from England with a style similar to Tears for Fears, but with a more alternative feel.  We have featured them before in our Monday Mashup column, and are pleased to be able to review the entire EP.  The musical greatness of this band is definitely NOT a “hoax,” and we believe they will be bringing us more great music for the foreseeable future.  Their first singles, “Hans” and “Paramount Tether” should help establish the band’s fitness for American radio, especially in light of their stand-out performances during this year’s SXSW.  You will enjoy every track.

Recommendation:  Hop on board this train before it leaves the station.  We highly recommend you Get this one before your friends do.

Monday mashup 2018: vol. 15

If it wasn’t a holiday, today would be tax day, but thanks to the holiday, you still have until midnight tomorrow to file your taxes.  Got ours done last month, so we’re just waiting for the refund.  Let’s get this week started with five new singles and music videos, and here we go.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single today comes from Europe, and features Norbert Gobor of Hungary and Vivian Franken from The Netherlands,  combining their talents as Dream Map.  Their first single, “Infinity,” is incredible, with majestic soundscapes and vocals that soar high above the music.  We can think of no better song to kick this off with week.

Our next single comes from a marriage between an American and a Scandinavian, resulting in Flora Cash.  Their single, “18 Dollars,” talks about the end of a relationship, and is relatable to just about everyone.

Our third track is a rocking number from Espanola for their tune, “Outside Saskatoon.”  The song has obviously been influenced by classic rock bands from the 70’s, and we simply love it.  Let us know what you think.

Next up is Harts, an artist we featured last month.  His latest single is “21&19,” and it’s an upbeat hip-hop/funk tune that is fun and reminiscent of the late great Al Green.

Our final single today is from alt-rock artist AlphaCub.  It is called “James Dean,” and it is an awesome homage to the great actor.  Enjoy this one with us.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first video is from Twang and Round.  This band has some powerful vocals, with the female side sounding a lot like Janis Joplin.  Check out “Devil to Pay,” and let it rock your Monday.

Our next video comes from LA phenom Dree Mon, who continues to burn up the indie music scene with her second single this year, “No Chill.”  If this one doesn’t get you moving and grooving, then you are beyond hope.  This one is a definite contender for best video of 2018.

Let’s slow things down with this intriguing video from Sean McMahon for “Show me the Way.”  It is a tight song with amazing cinematography, and we think you’ll dig it as much as we do.

Check out our fourth video from the absolutely gorgeous alt-soul group Corina Corina.  Here is their homage to those service industry workers at the local “Bar$.”  This one is hot.

Last but not least this week is a video from Theda.  This slow jam will give you something to think about as we move through this week.  Enjoy “Out of Sight Out of Mind.”

Get it or forget it – Allman Goldflies Band, Jenny Van West, TAUK, Lucy Wise, Kris Barras Band

Happy Friday.  Let’s wrap up another great week of indie music with five more reviews, featuring some blues, Americana, and folk from America and internationally.  Have a wonderful weekend.  Here we go.

Artist NameAllman Goldflies Band

Album NameSecond Chance

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Southern Rock/Blues

Track Listing:  1.  Baby Show me How; 2.  Can’t Turn Back Now; 3.  Ever Been so Lonely Baby; 4.  Fadiddle; 5.  Pretty Green Eyes; 6.  Southern’s all I Ever Want to Be; 7.  Standing in the Georgia Rain; 8.  When Jesus Calls; 9.  Yesterday’s Blues; 10.  You Gave me Love

Publicist:  Doug Deutsch Publicity Services

Review:  Yes, the “Allman” in the band name is related to the original Allman Brothers Band.  Gary Allman is a cousin of Greg and Duane, and he definitely inherited the skills that made his cousins legendary.  Combining with his long-time friend and bassist David Goldflies (who was actually a member of The Allman Brothers Band from 1978 to 1982), AGB has accomplished their goal of keeping the Allman name relevant with the release of their debut album, Second Chance.  Allman’s raspy voice has a striking resemblance to that of Darius Rucker, while the sweet southern rock tones will definitely remind you of those other Allmans.  The lead track, “Baby Show me How,” is the perfect introduction to the power of this band, and prepares the listener for the rest of this awesome album.  The vibe turns bluesy on “Can’t Turn Back Now” and “Ever Been so Lonely Baby.”  Goldflies even shows off his fiddling skills on “Fadiddle.”  The rest of the album is just as great, and best summed up in the instant classic, “Southern’s all I Ever Wanted to Be.”

Recommendation:  Don’t hesitate to Get this one for your collection.  We believe it will become a prized possession and one of the crown jewels of your musical library.

Artist Name Jenny Van West

Album NameHappiness to Burn

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Americana

Track Listing:  1.  Happiness to Burn; 2.  Live in a new Way; 3.  Never Alone; 4.  45; 5.  Where I Stand; 6.  Empty Bowl; 7.  Twenty-Seven Dollars; 8.  Thresholds; 9.  Can’t Have you Now; 10.  Embers

Publicist:  KG Music Press

Review:  This album was produced by an amazing LA musician named Shane Alexander, so we were instantly excited to review it.  He has been able to bring the inherent talents of his artist to a new and exciting level, and add to his reputation as one of LA’s best.   The first thing that hit us was the silky smooth vocals and the ragtime feel of the title track.  It is obvious that both Alexander and Van West did their musical history homework before creating this masterpiece of an album, which seamlessly flows between venues while highlighting the immense talents of the participants.  “Live in a New Way” could be the new theme song for many organizations, with its anthemic feel and soaring keys.  Like most of the material on this album, it deserves industry attention for possible radio airplay and placement opportunities.  Her track “45” is a straight-out country classic in the style of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “I Feel Lucky,” and could be a smash hit on country radio.  You won’t find a single weak track on this album – it is all golden.

Recommendation:  Easily one of the best albums of 2018, you would be a fool to not rush out and Get this one.  It is destined to be a classic.

Artist NameTAUK

Album NameShapeshifter I:  Construct

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Instrumental Jazz

Track Listing:  1.  Square 2; 2.  Premises; 3.  For Laughing out Loud; 4.  Stranger Danger; 5.  Malware

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  Jazz has changed a lot over the years, and TAUK represents the latest contemporary version of this storied art form.  Combining elements  of funk, hip-hop, progressive rock with traditional jazz yields a new type of music that will draw in a younger audience.  The sound is hip, funky and swanky while keeping all the nuances that traditional jazz lovers enjoy.  These songs will thrill you, chill you and fill you with an amazing smorgasbord of sounds, beats and rhythms.

Recommendation:  Every jazz lover should rush out and Get this one, as well as every lover of great music.

Artist NameLucy Wise

Album NameWinter Sun

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Folk/Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Solid Ground; 2.  Winter Sun; 3.  Smile; 4.  You are Here; 5.  Wild Roses; 6.  Rennie Street Love Song; 7.  Swing and Turn Jubilee; 8.  Lower East Side; 9.  Walking Out; 10.  Hard Times; 11.  Here for Now; 12.  Following Sparks; 13.  Happy New Year Melbourne; 14.  You Light up my Life

Publicist:  Penney and Logan

Review:  We previously had the privilege of sharing the music video for the first track, “Solid Ground,” about a month ago, and are very excited for the opportunity to review this stellar artist.  Aussie Lucy Wise brings her background into her interpretation of American folk music, as her soaring sweet voice rises high above the simple acoustic accompaniment of her songs.  She wrote 12 of the 14 songs on the album, and chose wisely with the other two, breathing new life into the Appalachian folk tune “Swing and Turn Jubilee,” as well as the Gillian Welch classic, “Hard Times.”  This young lady’s time has come and she wastes none of it in bringing us a stellar collection of songs that are perfect for American radio as well as placement opportunities in television and film.  The harmonies on “Winter Sun” are heavenly, as are the uplifting words contained in the simply beautiful “Smile.”  Put this one on repeat, as you’ll want to be reminded of the amazing beauty of these songs time and time again.

Recommendation:  This one is a must-have for every serious music lover.  Don’t waste any more time – Get it today!

Artist NameKris Barras Band

Album NameThe Divine and Dirty

Label:  Mascot Label Group

Genre:  Blues/Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Kick me Down; 2.  Hail Mary; 3.  I Don’t owe Nobody Nothing; 4.  Propane; 5.  Wrong Place Wrong Time; 6.  Lovers or Losers; 7.  She’s More Than Enough; 8.  Stitch me Up; 9.  Hold on for Tomorrow; 10.  Blood on Your Hands; 11.  Watching Over Me

Publicist:  Mascot Label Group

Review:  From the first note of “Kick me Down, Kris Barras leaves no doubt that he is the “badass” of blues/rock musicians, not only in the UK, but around the globe.  His strong voice is perfectly suited to this style of music, which takes blues/rock to a whole new level.  This entire album sparkles with raw power.  Some of the best songs include “Kick me Down,” “Propane,” “Wrong Place Wrong Time,”  “She’s More Than Enough,” and “Blood on Your Hands,” which combine elements of classic rock with the best blues guitar heard to date.  You cannot go wrong with this one.

Recommendation:  Run, don’t walk, and Get this one before it’s gone.  It doesn’t get any better than this!!!
