Get it or forget it – NEVERWONDER, Jacki Stone, Social Room, Brent Butler, Guilande

Where were you when the world stopped turning?  Those words were written by Alan Jackson as he tried to wrap his head around the events of 9-11.  On the 17th anniversary of that fateful day, please stop and take a moment to reflect on how this country came together in the aftermath, and how we can get back together again.  Regardless of your politics, let’s find a way, before it’s too late.

For our first Get it or Forget it of the week, we have some new artists to check out, as well as one of the best alt-rock bands from Los Angeles with their long-awaited new EP.  Let’s get going.

Artist Name:  NEVERWONDER

Review:  We have known brothers Andres and Vincent Ramos since before they left Exploiting Eve and founded NEVERWONDER.  The band has been through a lot of changes looking for that special something, which they seem to have found with their new additions of Jay Wise on guitar and classically trained Swiss vocalist Fabienne Grisel on lead vocals.  Grisel reminds us of another powerful female vocalist, VK Lynne of The Spider Accomplice, and we expect that she will lead NEVERWONDER to the promised land with her amazing vocal abilities, and the incredibly relatable lyrics and stunning musical track.  Both tracks are about love, and what we all must decide about it – to “Give it All” or be “Moving On.”  This EP shows us just a taste of what’s to come from this new version of NEVERWONDER, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Recommendation:  NEVERWONDER never fails to deliver, and the new EP is no exception.  Definitely jump on this bandwagon and Get it today!

Review:  Jacki Stone is proof that you don’t have to be from the South to play traditional country music.  Unfortunately, she has retained the California tendency to pepper her lyrics with explicit language.  Thank goodness the music makes it all worthwhile, including some driving southern rock and great horns on the title track, and a folksy, bluegrass sound on “Wishful Drinking.”    Our favorite tracks were “On a Real Lonely Night,” “Wishful Drinking,” “California is Country, Too,” “Slow Down Easy,” and “I Never saw it Coming.”

Recommendation:  This one is for all the “country” folk thriving on the west coast.  Enjoy this version of California country – it will fill the hole in your musical library.

Review:  Social Room is a UK-based indie rock band with a strong new wave/britpop feel that delivers on so many levels, vocally, lyrically and musically.  They could easily take on the American radio scene and do well, especially in the college community.  They have a decidely Top 40 vibe, and we bet they would be amazing in concert as well.  We love all five of these tracks, and can’t wait to see what comes next.

Recommendation:  These guys are definitely worth taking a chance.  Get their EP soon.

Review:  Like Eminem, Brent Butler makes his hip-hop in such a way that it has serious cross-over appeal to the pop scene.  His beats are sick, and despite the occasional explicit language, the lyrics are worth listening to.  The first track describes his music perfectly, because “Ready or Not,” Butler is coming to a radio dial near you.  We can see his music having a tremendous appeal to the college scene.

Recommendation:  While we are not the biggest fans of hip-hop, we would definitely add this one to our library, and recommend you do the same.

Review:  Guilande is named after lead singer Orlanda Guilande with a classic rock vibe that brings back great memories of 70’s rock and roll.  This live album captures their amazing sound and energy and makes the listener want to get out and see their perform in concert.  There is not a weak song in this collection, and we could easily listen to them over and over again.  We love the sound of Guilande’s voice and the musical chemistry with her band is perfect, resulting in songs that reasonate with the listener, especially if they are a fan of bands like Lynnyrd Skynnrd, Jefferson Airplane, Credence Clearwater Revival and the like.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one!  It belongs on repeat.

Monday mashup 2018: vol. 32

Are you ready for a new week?  We are constantly amazed at the quality of music being made by indie musicians each and every day.  We were stunned at the singles and videos we chose over the weekend for our Ten Amazing Videos and Ten Great Singles articles, and can’t wait to hear and see what comes next.  We have some news for you today, as well as five new singles and music videos to share, so let’s get going.

MINT FILM FESTIVAL RUNS SEPTEMBER 14-16

The First Annual Montana International Film Festival today announced its main slate of over 55 films, panels and events from September 14 – 16 in Billings, Montana.

The inaugural festival will see six narrative and eight documentary features competing for $15,000 in cash and in-kind prizes, including the first-ever MINT Spirit Award, as well as six juried awards:  Best Female Director, Best Narrative Feature, Best Narrative Short Film, Best Documentary Feature Film, Best Documentary Short Film and the Made In Montana award.

The historic Babcock Theater in Billings will host many of the MINT screenings and other programming and is re-emerging as a robust cinema, an effort kindled in part by MINT.  Murnion says, “The time seemed right for creating space for the unlikely moments that occur when people get together in the same room—well, rooms—at the same time to witness and engage in great storytelling.”  Other theaters include the Art House Cinema, a non-profit, independent cinema and pub in the heart of downtown Billings and the 2905 Montana, a pop-up space transformed for MINT on Montana Avenue in the Historic District of Billings.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single comes from former Mouseketeer and The Voice contestant Tony Lucca.  Here’s his latest tune, “Nashville,” which was released on August 31.

Next up is SNEAK PREVIEW of a new band to us, represented by our friend Gayle Davidson of AGD Entertainment, who brought us Wendy Sweetlove, among others.  Here is “In the Woods,” the first single off the forthcoming EP Folklore by Haunted Like Human.  Check out their website and pre-order the new album if you like the single.

Our third single this week is from Kinney, an artist that reminds us of Ingrid Michaelson.  Her voice is so sweet and the music is so much fun that you just want to stop the world and bask in the beauty of the song.  Please let us know what  you think about “Petah Bread Rocketship.”

Our fourth single is from another client of Davidson named Drunken Logic.  Here is their latest single, “Alone in America.”  We love their indie folk/alternative rock sound and those horns are amazing.

Our final single this week is from Colin Devlin, former member of The Devlins and currently both a producer and an artist for Blue Élan Records.  His new album, High Point, will be out soon, but he has just released his first single, “Just a Fire.”

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first video this week is the long awaited follow-up to the smash “Narcissist” by Alison Iraheta and Matthew Hager, aka Halo Circus.  The new video is for their song “Oh, Money,” and is just as powerful as the previous one.  Let’s rock out!

Next is “Play me Birdie” from Sexy Dex and the Fresh.  It is upbeat and fun, with lots of funky guitar.  We think you’ll like it.

Our next video features some interesting images to the theme “Decline in U.S. Civics” and is an instrumental number from He Arrived by Helicopter.  This one definitely deserves your attention.

Video number four is a definite hit for Saint Slumber and their song “Infinite.”  This one is simply amazing and belongs on the radio.  Let us know what you think.

Our final video this hit comes from Royal Canoe, which recently signed with Paper Bag Records.  Their first single is “Rayz,” and we can’t wait to hear the rest of the album which will be released next January.

Ten great singles released in August 2018

We just returned from the Griz-Drake game where our hometown Griz whooped up on the visiting team by a score of 48-16.   It was a much closer game in the first half, but the second half was all Griz.  To celebrate, here are 10 great singles which were released in August that didn’t make it into our Monday Mashup series.  Enjoy these songs.

Our first single is from Montreal’s Edwin Raphael and featuring Claire Ridgely.  It is a beautiful song called “Tangerine Skies,” and we think you’ll love it.

Next is a remix by South Florida DJ LaLa of a wonderful song from one of our favorite indie bands The Cravens.  Here is the dance track “Fool/Road to Reason.”  We think it will definitely get you up and dancing.

We are really digging on our third single, “Second Chance” by the amazing KRSTN.  Her voice is truly incredible, and the song has Top 40 hit written all over it.  Let us know what you think.

Our fourth single “Kerosene” by SARRA is another amazing dance track that makes it impossible to sit still when you hear it.  Get up and dance and enjoy this track.

Single number five is from the upcoming new album by Kiyomi Hawley, and the ladies continue to bring it in August with the first single, “Miss You Love You.”  We can’t wait to review this album when it is released.

Our second five starts off with the indie rock/ska sound of Hey Harriet on their single, “Too Fast Too Soon.”  This one has a definite resemblance to No Doubt, and we love them.

Single number seven is “Down and Lost” from another band we truly love, Belle and the Beats.  This one is smooth, sexy and just plain good R&B/soul.  We think you’ll love it.

Our next single also comes from Amsterdam, and are labelmates of Belle and the Beats.  Check out “Pick me Up” from Sweetwood, and get on the dance floor.

Our ninth single is “Touch the Sky” from The Offshore.  We think  you will love their retro sound.

Our final single this month is from Becoming Bristol, who we have featured several times in the past.  We really love their latest, “Brighter Days,” and think it deserves your attention.  It brings attention to the epidemic of suicide that is plaguing us with a refreshing take on how you can help save a life.

Ten amazing videos released in August 2018

As summer draws to a close, it’s still been a busy month for indie artists, who continue to bombard us with amazing videos.  Here are ten that we couldn’t fit into our Monday Mashup series, but are worthy of your consideration.

Our first video is from a band that we featured back in July and we really love their music and imaginative lyrics.  Here’s “Heart Boner” from Ninja Sex Party.  Can  you dig it?

Our next video comes from Scottish duo Free Love, with French lyrics from lead singer Suzanne Roden.  We think you will love this dance track featuring their singles “Pushing Too Hard” and “July.”

Next up is a beautiful video from Louise Marshall, inspired by a particularly hopeless time in her life.  Check out her song “Ocean” and see if it gives you goosebumps like it did for us.

Our fourth video comes from the amazing voice of Desanka.  We really love the sound of “Heart on a String” and think you will too.

At the midway point this month is an upbeat video from Dean Everett Jackson which we think is just the ticket for the weekend.  Here’s “Silver Linings.”  This is his first video, and we are extremely impressed.

Our next video is from Dead Ceremony, a band we have already featured three times because we just love their vision.  Check out their latest video for “Heartache.”

Our seventh video is “Rio” from Mexican singer-songwriter Vanessa Zamora.  We love the Spanish lyrics, and moving dance beat and the feel of this video.

Check out this amazing live video from Canadian country rock band Wave 21 for their song, “Ya Ya Ya.”

Video number 9 comes from Australian Max C Bud.  We love his indie rock sound and think you will too.  Check out “Temptress.”

Our final video this month is from Defanico and features Avanti in their video “You Make me Feel.”  We love the 80’s feel of the song and think it is the perfect way to end this edition of Ten Amazing Videos.

Review:  We met the delightful Gaelynn Lea at last month’s Traveler’s Rest Festival, and found her to be one of the kindest and most humble artists we have ever encountered.  She was launched into the national spotlight after toiling in the dark for 20 years when she won the 2016 NPR Tiny Desk Contest, and she is truly worthy of the attention.  Her performance at Traveler’s Rest brought down the house, and three members of The Decemberists and the vocalists from Lenore joined her for her finale.  Her new album is likewise incredible.  She starts off slow and easy on “Bound by A Thread” before cranking it up with the upbeat “Dark to Light and Dark Again.”  She truly sums it up with her lines, “No matter how far we have climbed, we can not do it on our own.”  Her violin playing is without equal, and our dream collaboration would have her playing a song with I’m With Her’s Sara Watkins.  “I See it Too” will bring you to happy tears, while the stirring instrumental “Jim & Judy’s Wedding” will make you want to waltz across the floor.  We could go on and on about this incredible album, but suffice it to say that all of her songs are so inspirational that you will want to hear them over and over again.  Put this one on repeat – you’ll thank me later!

Recommendation:  If you buy only one album in the next 10 years, it simply has to be this one.  Get it now!

Review:  Lil’ Red & The Rooster have their own brand of the blues that incorporates some Americana (“Soul Burning’ Wrong,” “Hey Mister Mister,” “Chicken Scratch”) and jazz (“Listen,” “Black Cat Fever,” “Tic Toc,” “Occupy my Mind”), giving it a rich and full sound.  They also provide some killer blues guitar, that makes you want to hear these songs again and again.  And if traditional blues is what you want, there is plenty of that as well (“Narcissistic Blues,” “Coq a Doodlin'”).  They even rock it up a bit on “Big Boy Boogie.”   In other words, this album is da bomb!

Recommendation:  Regardless of how you like your blues, this one is a worthy addition to  your collection.  We highly recommend you Get it today.

Review:  Teen Ravine have a hit on their hands with their debut album, which continues the success they have already found with the release of the singles “Bad Dream” and “Friend of a Friend.”  The critics, including Noisey, NY Magazine, DIY, The Line of Best Fit and The 405, are spot on in their analysis, marking these newcomers as future superstars.   These songs are extremely radio friendly and just damn good fun, and would make a great soundtrack for your next party or get-together with friends or family.  They remind us of early Steely Dan.

Recommendation:  Run out and Get this one.  You won’t regret it.

Review:  We reviewed his previous EP Dear God back in March 2018, and this new one is further confirmation of our original review.  It shows a deeper dimension to his composition and performance skills, and is even more commercial than his first EP.  Starting with “Minuet,” we feel a stronger, rockier edge to his music that Apple should definitely look at for future use in their commercials.

Recommendation:  Add this one to your collection if you like great music.

Review:  This album, produced by 2018 Contemporary Blues Artist of the Year Samantha Fish on her label, Wild Heart Records, announces to the world that there is a new voice in contemporary blues who isn’t afraid to borrow from Southern Rock and Country to give his music something more that is normally associated with the blues genre.  His music is extremely radio friendly, and would fit in a myriad of musical genres, making it perfect for cross-over on different formats.  The album is non-stop fun, and we simply love Long’s voice and his lyrics.  This is our kind of blues, and we will shout it out from the rooftop that there is a new king in town.

Recommendation:  Don’t even think about it.  You simply must Get this one!

Happy Thursday – hope  your week has been going well as we close in on another weekend.  Here are five more artists to check out while you wait.

Album Name:  Songs About Sex, Death and God:  Pt II

Genre:  Gothic Americana

Review:  Soviet Shiksa has a completely different sound that incorporates heavy guitar and a gothic feel with an Americana vibe, resulting in high energy music that is also reminiscent of post-punk.  This is the second part of their three-part EP series on Songs About Sex, Death and God.  According to their website, their sound is inspired by late night horror films, and we can definitely tell that from the lyrical content and the overall vibe.  Our favorite track is “Zeal,” with an amazing trumpet on top of spectacular guitar and a bluesy feel.  Regardless, it is a most worthy effort, and we look forward to part 3.

Recommendation:  Definitely give this one a spin.

Review:  If  you love the sound of the Gipsy Kings, then you will simply love Strunz & Farah.  They are two virtuoso guitar players and the variety of styles will truly amaze you.  Their music is heavily influenced by Latin and Middle Eastern  cultures and has a strong jazz feel.  From the frantic strumming on “Butterfly’s Wings,” the album just takes off, and is one of the best albums we have heard this year.

Recommendation:  Don’t think twice – Get this one today!

Review:  The Heart Already Knows is a collection of duets with some of the finest guitarists and pianists in the world.  Kate Reid is an accomplished pianist in her own right, and her smoky, sexy voice is the perfect vehicle to convey this amazing group of jazz standards, original compositions and pop tunes.  Her scatting seems so natural, and she brings life to these songs with just her vocal abilities.  It doesn’t hurt that her accompanists are some of the best in the business, resulting in a jazz masterpiece.

Recommendation:  Definitely get this one if you love jazz.

Album Name:  Afterglow

Genre:  Electronic Ambient

Review:  Yamaneko is a London-based producer who mixes electronic and ambient sound into a truly original musical form.  The music is so soothing that you will want to put it on whenever you need to relax or meditate.  Every song will soon become a favorite, and would also provide a perfect soundtrack in combination with your photos.  Give this one a listen, it is definitely worth it.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one!

Review:  If you are a fan of the TV show Empire, you know that after his near-death experience, Lucius Lyon (played by Terrence Howard) could “see” music instead of just hearing it.  That is the experience the listener receives from this new EP by Katmaz, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who brings his songs to life in such a cinematic and dramatic way that you can visually “see” the music.  Music Supervisors need to take immediate notice of this amazing artist, whose songs would be perfect for placement in television, film and commercials.  These songs also have potential for radio airplay.

It’s already Wednesday again, and I’m getting ready for my first session with Jessica Lynn Johnson, the director of my solo show, Livin’ the Dream.  We are working hard to give you a treat next June at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, and I can’t wait to see your reaction to our show.  In the meantime, here are five artists to consider as we head over the hump to the weekend.

Artist Name:  Norphlet

Review:  Norphlet is an up and coming duo featuring a Californian and a Texan, and we couldn’t be happier with the results.  These songs belong on the radio, and we truly love the first two singles, “Brand New” and “Heirlooming.”  The songs are truly well written, with intelligent lyrics, an amazing lead guitar and a powerful drum foundation.  The instrumental interludes are straight alt rock, and would make the perfect soundtrack for commercials, while the tracks themselves should be considered for placement in television and film.  We also love the lo-fi production, which brings out the strong vibe of this band, especially on the acoustic ballad “Cardinals.”  We have no doubt that this band has what it takes to make it in the industry, and we look forward to seeing what they have in store for us.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get it!

Review:  These jazz standards may have been previously recorded by such jazz legends as Alice Faye, Ella Fitzgerald and Ethel Waters, but Marty Elkins breathes new life into them, infusing them for a new generation.  Her voice is impeccable, and the arrangements will have every traditional jazz lover jumping for joy.  We love her scatting on “You Turned the Tables on Me,” as well as the organ and trumpet.  This is a great album for chilling after work, and relaxing with a glass of your favorite wine.  Elkins seamlessly blends jazz and blues, and even adds a gospel touch to “On Revival Day.”  We simply love every song, and think you will too.

Recommendation:  If you love traditional jazz and the blues, then this one is a must-have.  Get it!

Review:  Traditional blues always sound better with a funky organ and a wailing guitar, and this album has that in spades.  Add to that the soulful voice of Bruce Katz and you have the perfect recipe for a rocking blues sound that will get you on your feet and grooving to the music.  The instrumentals “Freight Train,” “Beef Jerky” and “River Blues” would work great as commercial placements, while the remainder of the songs are radio friendly and also good material for music supervisors.  You can’t go wrong with the amazing sound of this band, and we would love to see them perform live, as we are sure that all of the amazing energy would translate well in a concert setting.  “Shine Together (Tribe of Lights)” and “Make Things Right” would make great theme songs for a worthy charity.  They are very inspirational and the cherry on top of this perfect album.

Recommendation:  Don’t “hesitate,” Get this one today.

Review:  We have heard so much great music lately from down under, and Changelings has to be near the top of the heap.  Their music is very chill and dreamy, with a vibe that totally relaxes the listener.  The songs are truly radio friendly, and perfect for numerous placements in film and television.  These songs are like diamonds, perfectly reflecting the light.  Lead single “Moondance Venus” is the obvious choice for a break-out song, and we think it highlights the best parts of this album.

Recommendation:  We highly recommend you Get this one.

Review:  We were hooked from the first notes, but the amazing vocals truly put this one over the top.  We just wish there were more than four tracks, because our appetite is ravenous for more.  We love the fact that his music combines elements of rock, R&B and reggae, and especially love “Mr. Steal Your Girl.”  Leeroy is an amazing guitarist and vocalist, and we expect great things from him in the not too distant future.

Recommendation:  Drop what you’re doing and Get this one.

What an amazing time we had in North Carolina at the Richardson Family Reunion in Fayetteville.  There were two aunts, one sibling, five first cousins, and a slew of second and third cousins.  It was a day of great BBQ (thanks Damon!), food, sweets and the best conversation, as memories flowed like wine.  It made me remember what I loved most about being around family.  We also got to see an afternoon performance by our friend Jason Adamo, who recently scored his first platinum album as he co-wrote the recent #1 song by Brett Young, “Beautiful Believer.”  Can’t wait to go back again, but in the meantime, here are five more artists for you to check out.

Review:  The first thing you notice is the deep voice of Nicholas Merz and the soothing folk rock soundtrack that supports these songs.  This is his debut solo album after recording six albums with the Seattle indie rock band Darto.  The songs have an almost Americana feel, especially “Man Without Woman,” and a serious singer-songwriter vibe.  Among the best tracks are “Fashion,” the first single “Bulled Rose,” “Domestic Dispute,” and “Down Range.”

Recommendation:  This one is definitely worth checking out.

Review:  This EP contains two songs (and an instrumental version of the second song), showing two entirely different sounds, albeit both are in the alt rock family.  “Off the Map” is very dark, moody and melancholic, while “On the Outside” is more upbeat but with the same dark and melancholic vibe.  The band also simultaneously released music videos for each song, which have received critical acclaim and resulted in the video for “Off the Map” being selected for the Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York, UK.

Recommendation:  This band is definitely not for everybody.  If you like your music different, and you are adventurous, then give this one a spin.

Review:  We can safely say we have never heard anything like Lower Automation.  It has the high intensity of punk with the chaos of psychedelica, and a healthy does of hard core rock.  The lyrics are difficult to understand both sonically and literally.  This is not music for the masses, and we hope they can find an audience for this entirely different type of music.

Recommendation:  This one is only for the truly adventurous.  For the rest of us, forget it.

Review:  If you say instrumental surf rock to most music lovers, they will immediately think of the incredible Dick Dale and his song forever associated with the movie Pulp Fiction.  Trust us when we tell you the legacy of Dale will live on in the work of Lucky 757.  They not only continue his rich tradition, they actually improve upon it.  This is an amazing set of 10 songs that every lover of surf rock will enjoy, and you will want to hear this one over and over again.

Recommendation:  By all means, rush out and Get this one.

Review:  We don’t normally review albums that are more than six months old, but we were so impressed with this young man that we are making an exception in his case.  We met him last Sunday while attending the Jason Adamo show we talked about earlier.  His voice is crystal clear and perfect for country music, with a sound similar to Darius Rucker and Dustin Lynch.  The title song is clever and strong, and would be a great candidate for extended airplay on country radio, as would “I Love You Today.”    Cellucci is a natural storyteller, and we can’t understand how he hasn’t been discovered yet.  With his talents, he could easily make it in today’s country music scene.  There is not a weak song on this album.  Nashville needs to definitely take notice of this artist.

Recommendation:  This artist is heading for stardom.  Jump on this bandwagon now, and Get his debut EP today!

Rayland Baxter, Jose Gonzalez and The Brite Lights, Shakey Graves at Big Sky Brewing Company – live performance review

Our final concert for August at the Big Sky Brewing Company occurred on August 25, and included solo performer Rayland Baxter, and bands José González & the Brite Lights and Shakey Graves.  It was a remarkably chill evening that coincided with the return of the students for the fall semester at the University of Montana and the 13th annual River City Roots Festival.  Once again, it was produced by Knitting Factory Presents, and they did another wonderful job, as did the amazing catering staff of Riversong Gourmet Catering.

Nashville native Rayland Baxter kicked off the evening with a short 20-minute solo set, playing songs from his recently released album Wide Awake.  He also made a tongue-in-cheek attempt at shredding, much to the delight of the crowd.  After his set, we got to spend some time together, as he hung out with me at the pass gate, watching portions of the rest of the artists performing.  He was an extremely nice guy who had a few friends and fans in the audience, and took the time to talk to each and every one of them.

Next on the stage was Swedish artist José González, who brought his band, The Brite Lights, with him.  The harmonies were exquisite, as was the amazing sound of their music.  The audience got into them rather quickly, and were soon in sync with the performance.  The band also had the amazing sound of The Gipsy Kings, and the audience roared with approval at not just the vocal harmonies but the musical harmonies and percussion as well.  Check out their most recent Spotify upload for a taste of the magic.

Finally, it was time for the headliner, and the crowd was restless with anticipation.  This was the third recent performance by Shakey Graves in Missoula.  The last time he was here, he was the opening act for The Decemberists’ Traveler’s Rest Festival last year.  He and his other guitarist snuck into the crowd and began their set from just in front of the sound booth while his drummer and bass player joined in from the stage.  The crowd went crazy, and it became quickly clear that we were in for a wonderful show.  Graves played with his band for approximately 30 minutes before sending them off on a break while he performed alone as a one-man band, reminiscent of the great Rocco DeLuca.  As this was his first local performance with a full band, the audience was most familiar with his solo material.  This portion also lasted about 30 minutes before he was joined on stage for a stirring duet with Baxter.  After the song, Graves invited Baxter to join in with the band, and he continued on acoustic guitar, providing a welcome addition to the overall amazing sound of Graves’ band.  He sent the band away again and performed his final songs by himself, honestly telling the crowd that it was his true “last song”, as he wasn’t going to do a fake encore.  The concert ended before curfew, and the crowd quickly departed the venue.  Afterwards, I had the opportunity to take a co-worker and his date backstage.  She was a huge Shakey Graves fan, and was dying to meet him.  I had already cleared it with management, and Graves was the perfect gentleman as he took the time to talk with them and take pictures.  It was the perfect ending to a wonderful night of music.

Review:  It’s been 10 years since she recorded her first of eight albums, and this one is her best yet.  Grammy-nominated producer Dave Darling brings it all together for this young blues superstar whose songwriting abilities continue to amaze us.  From the first notes of the title track, it becomes quickly obvious that the listener is in for a treat, as the husky voice of Gina Sicilia fills the songs with so much soulfulness.  Her version of the blues borrows considerably from classic R&B, and comparisons to great singers like Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight are a natural conclusion.   This is baby-making music that soothes your soul and lets you know that you are not alone in what’s happening around you.  She gives us a blistering and soulful cover of Bad Company‘s “Ready for Love” and also hooks up with her labelmate, Grammy-nominated blues singer Janiva Magness, for an amazing duet on “Brighter Day.”  She even goes a little country on “Sugar” and does her best impression of 60s girl groups on “Darling.”  You can’t go wrong with this album, and will find yourself listening to these songs over and over again.

Recommendation:  If you treasure great songs sung by an amazing vocalist, then you simply MUST Get this one.  Rush out and grab it today!

Review:  Rare Americans are a pair of Canadians who only started writing songs a year ago.  Before recording this debut album, the songs were made into music videos where they quickly became viral hits on YouTube, including over a million views on “Cats, Dogs & Rats.”  They mix punk, hip hop and rock into their version of alt rock, with lyrics aimed at calling out the bad in the world so that it can be dealt with.  This is high energy music that will make you think as well.  The vocals are not pretty but they are perfectly suited for this type of music.
