Women in Entertainment: Alice Wallace, evolving California country sound

Hard to believe that our last Women in Entertainment feature was published in November 2016.  So much has happened since then, and we have some great upcoming features for you on some of today’s best female entertainers.  We start today with the continuing saga of four-time LA Music Critic Award winner Alice Wallace, who also won the Female Vocalist of the Year award at the 2017 California Country Awards.

We last interviewed Wallace in August 2016 as part of our Getting to Know the Winners of the 2016 LA Music Critic Awards series.  At the time, she was an up and coming country artist who had recently signed with California Country Records, the label created by Manda Mosher and KP Hawthorn, formerly of CALICO the band.  Mosher has now gone solo and Hawthorn has created a new label, Rebelle Road Records, along with bassist Adrienne Isom and industry executive Karen Rappaport McHugh, an integral part of the successful Stagecoach Festival.  Wallace is the first artist signed to the new label and her album, Into the Blue, drops on Friday, January 18.

Rebelle Road is a newly founded entertainment company dedicated to strengthening the California country music community and expanding the role for women in the Americana/roots genre. Launched in March 2018, the trio have combined their longtime experience in music marketing, festival production, visual presentation and life as touring artists and record label owners. They’ve already produced showcases at SXSW and AMERICANAFEST, industry panels and two one-day festivals.

This past October, the trio produced a benefit concert at the legendary Palomino Club, which hadn’t been open for 23 years.  “We realized that we needed to create what doesn’t exist right now in the music industry — both for women and for artists living outside of Nashville.  There is a strong history and legacy here in California; the Palomino spirit lives on and we’re going to bring it back,” says Hawthorn.  Wallace was a featured artist that night, and Pollstar called her stellar moment on the famed stage (which has been described as the Grand Ole Opry West) as “shot through with Crystal Gayle’s ache and Linda Ronstadt’s country essence.”

Wallace has a truly distinctive style, which she explains evolved from growing up surrounded by the music of artists like Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt.  “I really taught myself to sing by mimicking their styles,” she says.  “The powerful belt that Linda has, the emotive lilt to Emmylou’s voice.  Trying to navigate those different elements helped me find my own voice nestled in between all that.”

These days, Wallace performs as many as 200 dates a year, both solo and with a band.  “In some ways, I wish I had done it sooner,” she says of her decision to pursue her passion for playing music.  “But I’m also glad I have the life experience to help fuel my songwriting and survive life on the road.”

When asked the question, “What inspires you?” she responded:  “In writing this new album, I took so much inspiration from California and the southwest.  I have spent the last three years touring across this region, soaking in the atmosphere of the ocean and the desert and the mountains and the canyons.  And I think you can hear that in these new songs.”

When asked if she considered herself a country or Americana artist, she told us that she thinks she is more Americana these days.  Although she still sings with a twang, she only used pedal steel on two of the songs on the new album, which has a grittier edge than her previous country release.  Check out our review of the new album in Friday’s Get it or Forget it series.

We also asked her about her future plans.  She told us: “Once the album is out, it will be back on the road to play these songs as much as possible.  We are talking about another European tour, plus dates all across the country.  I am so looking forward to sharing these new songs with audiences.”

She also plans to attend SxSW in March, where her label is sponsoring the California Country Social, a concert featuring about 30 bands.  She said she will likely return to AMERICANAFEST in September as well.

You can keep up with Wallace by visiting her Facebook page, following her on Twitter and Instagram, subscribing to her YouTube and Spotify pages, or just clicking on her website.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single today comes from the soulful sound of Alexis Keegan, who has returned to her sultry roots.  It is called “Gospel,” and we are believers.

Next up is the latest band that has been given new life by our friends at Blue Élan RecordsThe Mustangs were an all girl group that ruled the LA Country scene.  Three members of that group, Suzanna Spring, Holly Montgomery and Sherry Rayn Barnett have joined with Suzanne Morissette and Aubrey Richmond to form Mustangs of the West, and have released their first single, “T-Shirt From California.”  We think  you’re going to love having  them back.

Next up is the latest from Summer Heart, featuring guest vocalist K¥LO on “Subside.”  We think this may become your favorite summer jam.

Our fourth single comes from Danish electro-pop duo Feel Freeze, who encourage us to “Let Go!”  We think it’s timely advice.

Our final single this week comes from an 18-year old phenom from London.  Although the single came out in late June, we inadvertently thought it was an EP until recently.  We think “Computer Games” deserves some attention, so let us know what you think.  Here is Greta Jaime.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Just as a new country group arrives in LA, one of their premier ones, CALICO the band, says goodbye.  Manda Mosher and KP Hawthorn have decided to call it quits, but are leaving us with this amazing video cover of the classic hit from The Mommas and Poppas, “California Dreaming.”  Thanks for five years of amazing music.

Next is the latest video from The 131ers, who we reviewed last week.  Check out their fun video for “Ballerina.”

Speaking of bands we recently reviewed, here’s the latest “Nothing is Enough” from Delta Will.  We love the groove of this song, and think you will too.

Our fourth video this week is another amazing from Blue Élan Records, Roan Yellowthorn.  Here is her latest single, “Talk About It.”

Our final entry this week is a lyric video from Rachel Eckroth, whose new album will be dropping October 19.  Here is “Call my Name.”

Get it or forget it – Rusty Young, Calico the Band, Andrea Harsell & Luna Roja

It’s Friday again, and time for the release of new albums from two of our indie favorites as well as the solo debut of a rock legend.  Please grab a cup of joe and let’s review these sure to be classic albums.

Artist Name:  Rusty Young

Album Name:  Waitin’ for the Sun

Label:  Blue Élan Records

Genre:  Roots Rock/Americana

Track Listing:  1.  Waitin’ for the Sun; 2.  My Friend; 3.  Honey Bee; 4.  Sara’s Song; 5.  Heaven Tonight; 6.  Hey There; 7.  Seasons; 8.  Innocent Moon; 9.  Down Home; 10.  Gonna’ Let the Rain

Publicist:  None

Review:  Rusty Young was the former lead singer for Poco, and has signed with Blue Élan Records as a solo artist.  He and Poco have reunited for several shows, including a few at this week’s AmericanaFest in Nashville.  His debut solo album, Waitin’ for the Sun, is being released today,   Stylistically, Young’s solo album fits like a continuation of the Poco legacy, and reminds us why Poco is still as popular in 2017 as it was when it emerged from Buffalo Springfield in 1969.  It reminds this writer of the amazing country rock music that sprang forth in the early 70’s from bands like The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Loggins and Messina and the Little River Band.  Although it features the simpler sounds of music without all the added layers, it comes from such a pure place that it makes the listener feel at peace in the world.  We love every song on the CD, but especially the title track, “Honey Bee, “Sara’s Song, “Heaven Tonight,” and “Hey There.”  We also love the instrumental track, “Seasons.”  Welcome back Rusty – we simply love your solo effort.

Recommendation:  If you’re in Nashville, definitely get over to the Blue Élan showcase on September 15 at the Filming Station to check out this amazing artist, and run to your nearest music outlet and Get this album.  You won’t regret that decision.

Artist Name:  Calico the Band

Album Name:  Under Blue Skies

Label:  California Country

Genre:  Americana/Country

Track Listing:  1.  Fine Line; 2.  Cold Cold Love; 3.  The 405; 4.  Roll Away the Stone; 5.  The Leaving Kind; 6.  California Dreamin’; 7.  Free Man (ft. Jason Charles Miller); 8.  Under Blue Skies; 9.  Fly me Away; 10.  Love Gets in the Way; 11.  Come to Me; 12.  Into the Unknown; 13.  Ladies of the Canyon

Publicist:  MSO PR

Review:  One thing that has always set Calico the Band apart from their peers is the incredible harmonies of founding members Manda Mosher and Kirsten Proffit.  That trend continues on the sophomore release, Under Blue Skies, which will only strength their position as one of the premier Americana bands in the world.  It doesn’t hurt that the duo has created their own label, California Country, which supports not only their music, but their vision as well, with the addition of such amazing acts as the Alice Wallace Band, who, like Calico, are multi-LA Music Critic Award winners.  Two of the songs have already been released as videos, “The 405” and “Cold Cold Love,” and the band is showcasing their talent in Nashville this week at AmericanaFest.  This is an album you listen to from start to finish, and never need to skip a track – every single one sets the Americana bar high, allowing Calico to lead by example.  Besides the first two singles, we really love “Roll Away the Stone,” their dynamic cover of “California Dreamin’,” “Free Man,” “Fly me Away,” and “Ladies of the Canyon.”

Recommendation:  If you are in Nashville, definitely check out one of their three showcases at AmericanaFest.  We also strongly encourage you to Get their album and put it on perpetual repeat.

Artist Name:  Andrea Harsell & Luna Roja

Album Name:  Something for the Pain

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Blues/Roots-Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Didn’t do It; 2.  Oh Boy; 3.  Singles; 4.  Singing Angel; 5.  Something for the Pain; 6.  Hush Little Baby; 7.  Teenage Girl; 8.  Hard Times; 9.  Hearts Were Made to Mend; 10.  Like we Used to Do; 11.  Medicine and Chains; 12.  Born in the Valley

Publicist:  None

Review:  When we first moved to Missoula, Andrea Harsell was one of the first local indie artists we met.  We have loved her solo material, but had not had a chance to see her perform with a full band until the recent Flathead Lake Blues and Music Festival.  Her band, Luna Roja, gives her the dynamic edge she needed to add to her amazing voice and incredible songwriting chops.  With the band, she adds a strong roots rock vibe to her bluesy songs, creating a sound that lifts the spirits and gets the toes first to tapping and then onto the dance floor.   Their debut album is a fabulous collection of songs that should serve to elevate Harsell & Luna Roja into the elite ranks of great musical bands.  We especially love “Oh Boy,” “Singing Angel (with its gentle reggae sound),” the title track, “Hush Little Baby,” and “Hard Times.”

Recommendation:  We can hardly wait to attend the CD release show on September 15 at Missoula’s Top Hat Lounge.  If you are anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, we encourage you to join us and to grab a copy of her CD.  It is the perfect culmination to any musical library.

Women in entertainment: Kirsten Proffit, premier musician, songwriter and producer

Normally the first Monday of the month would be dedicated to introducing you to a future Women in Entertainment member.  Unfortunately this month, I was unable to obtain the information needed for my selected honoree, so we will continue with our regular series.  Next up to be spotlighted is the other half of California Country records, the undeniably talented Kirsten Proffit, a premier musician, songwriter and producer, and one-third of the hugely incredible Calico the band.

“Brash yet sweet, powered by love, passion, pain, and loss, Kirsten Proffit’s songs connect with listeners on a level far deeper than most of today’s singer-songwriters,” says her official bio, and believe me, it’s not hyperbole!  I have known her for quite a few years, and she has impressed me with her professionalism, her talents and her drive during the entire time.

I was first introduced to her when I was working with the Orange County Music Awards (OCMA), heading up the live acoustic performance competition.  With a sound that is a combination of the songwriting talent of Joni Mitchell and the musical abilities of Sheryl Crow, she wowed the Gypsy Den audience and impressed the judges panel and walked away with a win in the “Best Female Artist” category.

The judges were not the only ones impressed by this rising star, as she also impressed producer Bruce Witkin (Vanessa Paradis, Johnny Depp), who worked with Proffit on her debut album, Lucky Girl, an album that delves into the often turbulent world of relationships.  It resulted in two singles, “Something I Can’t Be” and “Redemption Day,” both of which received their fair share of radio airplay across the country.

Not only did Proffit’s music impress radio’s program directors and fans, it also began to move music supervisors, who placed her music in such shows as Friday Night Lights, Dawson’s Creek, Smallville and The Osbournes, and included them on the DVD soundtracks of Felicity and Party of Five.  This in turn led to a placement in Jiminy Glick in Lalawood, a movie featuring legendary Saturday Night Live comedian and director Martin Short, who used three of Proffit’s songs, including the movie’s theme song.

Setting aside the obvious skills exhibited in her recorded music, what truly sets Proffit apart from her contemporaries is her ability to craft amazing live performances, which came in handy when she appeared on such nationally syndicated radio shows as  “The Dick and Skibba Show” and the “Frosty, Heidi & Frank” show (broadcast from LA’s 97.1 KLSK).   Using songs from Lucky Girl, Proffit won the station’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” competition, resulting in her selection to perform at their songs Birthday Bash Concert.

What inspires her?  “I am totally inspired by honesty in songwriting and performances. Anything that is true is great to me and I try not to get hung up on what is cool or trendy.  I want to make people feel something when they hear my songs.  A song is a great opportunity to say something – – good, bad or otherwise – – and really make a point,” she said. “I just want to make my point in the coolest, most musical way possible.”

Prior to hooking up with Manda Mosher to form Calico the band, Proffit shared the stage with several high-profile artists, including Duncan Sheik, Paula Cole, and the Steve Miller Band, and was chosen by Fender for an endorsement deal, which led to her performance on their stage at the 2013 NAMM Show.

Where does Proffit go from here?  “I am planning on continuing with Calico the band, finishing our upcoming record and putting it out in spring.  I am also continuing to produce other artist’s records with my partner Steve Berns and putting out records via California Country Records, the label that Manda Mosher and I started.  We will see how it goes, but it looks like there might be a California Country compilation in our future – – there are some great Americana artists on this side of the country and we would love to put something together that represents what is happening on the west coast right now.”

For more information about this amazing artist, check out her website and Facebook pages, follow her on Twitter and subscribe to her YouTube channel.

Women in entertainment: Manda Mosher, California country personified

It is quite an honor to present this week’s featured Women in Entertainment artist, Manda Mosher, accomplished solo artist and member of CALICO the band, new mother and the true personification of the California country sound.

A sixth generation Californian and Angeleno. Mosher’s family first came to the City of Angels in the late 1800’s before establishing a chicken farm in the Valley in 1911.  She grew up in a musical family that lived in the little town of La Crescenta, a sleepy and secluded community located at the foot of the mountains just north of Pasadena and east of Los Angeles.

She picked up her grandfather’s Gibson ukulele at the age of five.  With her father playing flamenco guitar and her mother singing, music was truly an integral part of her daily family life.  Mosher learned her father’s flamenco tunes from memory and quickly developed an ear for and interest in music.  She spent much of her youth studying her parent’s musical library, reading Neil Young liner notes, all the while keeping her ear to the stereo speakers, listening to the likes of Bob Dylan, The Doors, The Beatles and Leo Kottke.   As a result, writing and singing became a more natural form of communication than talking.  “I found I would leave encounters thinking ‘I wish I would have said…’ and this would give me the impetus to sit down and compile my thoughts along with images and poetry and set it to song. This was and still is my most powerful form of communication,” Manda explains.

After high school, Mosher decided she needed a more serious place to study music, so she relocated to the east coast to attend the renowned Berklee School of Music in Boston.  While there she honed her talents of playing guitar and piano, learned music theory as well as reading and writing music.   She returned to Los Angeles after graduation, but learned that touring could also provide a good escape from Los Angeles when she needed it.  ‘The best part of touring is getting out to realize how big the world is while making new connections with people you may never have met otherwise.  Being on the road naturally puts miles between you and everything at home, bringing with it a new freedom that allows you to break your everyday routine and just live in the moment.”

Mosher signed with Red Parlor Records in 2008, after winning the Los Angeles Music Award for best Female Singer/Songwriter of the Year in 2005.  Her first album, Everything you Need was produced by the great Guy Erez (Gipsy Kings, Ziggy Marley, Alan Parsons), and allowed Mosher to perform on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, as well as opening for, and singing with, Jackson Browne.  “These were childhood dreams come true for me.”   She followed these feats with a critically-acclaimed EP City of Clowns in 2010, leading to another Los Angeles Music Award for National Touring Act.

The title track was written about Mosher’s relationship with Los Angeles, which she describes as a love/hate sort of affair, as depicted in the song.  Mosher admits she has often thought of leaving Los Angeles, but it is her family that has kept her here.  “I’ve always felt sadness for this town.  I’ve watched all these people come and go, taking what they can, getting famous, getting rich, with little regard for the community and the people that call it home.  On the other hand the opportunities are endless here.”

In 2013, Mosher combined her talents with Kirsten Proffit and Jaime Wyatt to form CALICO the band.  Right off the bat, the group started touring and performed more than 200 shows, leading to their selection as the Los Angeles Music Awards’ National Touring Artist of the Year.  Wyatt left the band to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Aubrey Richmond, a world-class fiddler and the perfect complement to the band.   Their first album, Rancho California was released in September 2014 on their own California Country label, and won Americana Album of the year for the Los Angeles Music Awards, as well as winning LA Music Critic’s award for Best Country Album.  They have continued their hectic touring schedule, which included a stop at the 2014 Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, where they were joined onstage by special Foo Fighter guests, Chris Shiflett & Rami Jaffee, as well as the 2015 Americana Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee.

“We’re very connected to a community of artists and venues that are flying the Americana flag,” said Mosher, “deeply influenced by the old scenes from the Palomino days, the Bakersfield Country sound from Buck Owens carried on by Dwight Yoakam, the sound of Gram Parsons’ music, Joshua Tree and more.”  “We’re here to tell people that Americana music is very much alive,” said Proffit, “and California is a viable source for this style.  We’re passionate about carrying on the tradition by incorporating these influences, but through a new lens, and always with respect.”

But what inspires Mosher?  “Inspiration is an elusive thing to control . . . I often think thoughts that are the strongest push themselves to the forefront drowning out other thoughts forcing themselves to be expressed and written about in song. When an inspired song is coming it’s important to stop what you’re doing and allow it to arrive . . . the timelessness of a song trumps most any other activity that may happen in a day. Anything from spending time with a favorite guitar to a quiet setting can allow the space for inspiration to peak through.”

Mosher’s music has been featured on the Emmy Award-winning Venice The Series, while the music of CALICO the band can be heard on  ABC’s hit series Nashville and NBC’s The Night Shift.

What are Mosher’s future plans?  “What keeps me going is the need to always create something new that is evolved beyond what I’ve been involved with in the past, be it striving to reach new levels of quality in recording or performing in venues that bring a new challenge.  We’re working on our second CALICO the band album which we hope to have completed by the end of the year and we plan to continue on with our touring adventures.”
You can learn more about this amazing artist and her band by checking out their websites and Facebook (solo and Calico) pages, following them on Twitter (solo and Calico) and subscribing to their YouTube (solo and Calico) channels.
