Ten amazing videos released in December 2018

We hope you enjoyed our Ten Great Singles article yesterday, which we are following up with our Ten Amazing Videos today.  We had a wonderful New Year’s Day, watching the Rose Bowl parade and then heading off to the theater for the IMAX showing of Aquaman – what an amazing movie.  That was the best superhero movie we have ever seen.  Marvel could learn a few things from DC.

Our first video this month is from one of our favorite indie country bands, the Redhead Express.  It is also one of the most patriotic videos we have ever seen, and a fitting tribute to one of their major influences, Walk Off the Earth, after the death of Mike Taylor, The Beard Guy.  Here’s their cover of “Home We’ll Go.”

Next up is a blues rock smoker from The Spear Shakers, featuring the incredible guitar licks of Kelly Richey and perfect drums by Sherri McGee.  We think this one creates the perfect start to this “back to work” day.  Enjoy “Something’s Going On.”

Our third video is a beautiful cover of the Christmas classic, “O Holy Night” by the alter-ego of the Redhead Express.  Check out the beautiful cinematography and the stunning vocal harmonies of the PaperDolls, who recently performed at the White House Christmas party.

Our next video is from an up and coming hip-hop artist named Strick, a native of North Carolina now residing in Las Vegas.  Check out his latest track, “Slime Neighbors.”

Video number five comes to us via Send to Media for electro-pop artist Kitzi.  It is her debut release and we think it proves this young lady has a future in the business.  Check out “armadilla.”

Our second five kicks off with the soaring vocals of Milo Milone and her German neo-soul/R&B band Rhonda.  Set in a bar, various people sing Karoake to their single “I Couldn’t Say Yes.”  We’re happy to say yes to this amazing band.

We follow that one up with the latest from Justin Salter.  We love the comedy and the sound of this video, which features the lovely Bella Muse, and think you will likewise enjoy “You and Me.”

Our eighth video features the dreamy and sweet vocals of Maggie Lindermann and her incredible song, “Would I.”  If the question refers to whether we want more from this artist, the answer is a resounding yes.

Our next video also features stunning cinematography and the sweet sound of Australian Klara Zubonja.  We love the intricacies of the music on “The Winds of Life,” and think you will too.  Please let us know what you think about his artist.

We close out this month with the latest from another Australian artist, Cap Carter.  We love his vocals and the beautiful cinematography of “Thrill.”  Definitely check him out.

Get it or forget it (Christmas edition) – Mindi Abair and the Boneshakers, Paul Cardall, Redhead Express, The Humming Bards

Happy Thanksgiving.  As promised, here are four Christmas albums we received this year, and they are all amazing.  We hope this gets you in the proper mood for the holiday season.

Artist Name:   Mindi Abair & the Boneshakers

Album Name All I Got for Christmas is the Blues

Label:   Pretty Good for a Girl Records

Genre:   Christmas (Blues/Funk)

Track Listing:   1.  All I Got for Christmas is the Blues; 2.  I Can’t Wait for Christmas; 3.  Merry Christmas Baby; 4.  Christmas (Baby Please Come Home); 5.  The Best Part of Christmas; 6.  Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree; 7.  The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire); 8.  Run Run Rudolph; 9.  Christmas Fool

Publicist:   Blind Raccoon

Review:  Mindi Abair is a two-time Grammy-nominated saxophonist and vocalist who is a master of jazz, blues and funk.  On her first holiday album, she brings four originals and five re-imagined classics to get your holidays off to a bluesy and funky start.  She kicks things off with the original title track before reinventing her own 2004 tune, “I Can’t Wait for Christmas.”  The band then tackles the Charles Brown R&B standard “Merry Christmas Baby” before tackling and improving on the Phil Spector/Darlene Lee classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”  Our favorite song is next with “The Best Part of Christmas,” a song she co-wrote with her old college friend and long-time collaborator, Matthew Hager from Halo Circus.  On “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” she gets to be both Brenda Lee and Boots Randolph as she gives the pop classic a modern bluesy sound.  You will not believe the amazing new arrangement the band gives to “The Christmas Song,” but we think it will easily become your favorite version.  She closes out this special Christmas gift with Chuck Berry‘s “Run Run Rudolph” before ending with a “back porch break down” on “Christmas Fool.”  This one is sure to become a holiday favorite.

Recommendation:   Don’t think twice.  Get this one for your holiday listening enjoyment.

Artist Name:   Paul Cardall

Album Name:   Christmas

Label:   Stone Angel Music

Genre:   Christmas (Classical)

Track Listing:   1,  Hard the Herald Angels Sing; 2.  In the Bleak Midwinter (ft Audrey Assad); 3.  O Come O Come Emmanuel; 4.  Jesus Once of Humble Birth; 5.  It Came Upon a Midnight Clear; 6.  Christmas Past; 7.  Joy to the World; 8.  O Holy Night (ft CeCe Winans); 9.  Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella; 10.  Once in Royal David’s City; 11.  Son of God (ft Patrice Tipoki); 12.  Away in a Manger; 13.  Silent Night

Publicist:   Morris Public Relations

Review:  Composer Paul Cardall brings us a traditional and classical approach to Christmas music, with his majestic and sweeping orchestral sound.  He also has three special guest vocalists in Grammy-winner CeCe Winans (“O Holy NIght”), Australian Broadway star Patrice Tipoki (“Son of God”) and award-winning singer-songwriter Audrey Assad (“In the Bleak Midwinter”).  With these group of songs, you can’t help getting into the Christmas spirit with a soundtrack that will be perfect for all your holiday parties and get-togethers.  Stand-out performances on “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “O Holy Night,” which are sure to become some of your favorite holiday songs.

Recommendation:  This is one of the best we’ve ever heard, and belongs in your holiday collection. Get it right away!

Before we review our final two albums, we wanted to share a couple of Christmas songs that we received this year.  First up is Cherrill Rae, who updates the classic pop song “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” into a modern-day sweeping standard.

Our second single is from Charlie Milliken, who takes it from soulful to country with his beautifully written and performed “Season.”

Artist NameRedhead Express/PaperDolls Band

Album NameChristmastime

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Christmas (Country)

Track Listing:  1.  Away in a Manger; 2.  Carol Medley; 3.  God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen; 4.  Holidaze; 5.  Love is Christmas; 6.  Mary did you Know; 7.  O Holy Night

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  The four sisters that encompass Redhead Express have made a name for themselves with their spectacular harmonies and brilliant musicianship, including guitar, violin, banjo and stand up bass.  On their first holiday album, they turn these well-known and loved Christmas songs into bluegrass/country classics.  They also bring a couple of new songs to the table to give us an even better holiday treat.  On “Carol Medley,” they add in the equally wonderful voices of their family to round out the sound before introducing the more pop/rock sound of their new project, the PaperDolls Band, on “God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen.”  They follow this up with the amazing original “Holidaze” and an uplifting bluegrass cover of Sara Bareilles‘ “Love is Christmas.”  They close out this brilliant collection with their holiday gift from last year, “Mary Did You Know,” and the classic “O Holy Night.”

Recommendation:  If you love harmonies and great music, then this is the holiday album for you.  Drop what you’re doing and Get it now!

Artist NameThe Humming Bards

Album Name Holy Common Ground

Label:  JamCat Records

Genre:  Christmas (Pop/Rock)

Track Listing:  1.  Christmas in the Ordinary; 2.  December Song; 3.  Prayer for Everyone; 4.  Christmas Is; 5.  For Auld Lang Syne

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Multiple LA Music Critic Award winning and Blue Élan Records artist Cindy Alexander joins with country superstar songwriter Kevin Fisher to form this amazing new group.  What started out as a friendship and writing collaboration has blossomed into a special holiday EP featuring three new songs by the duo, as well as one by Fisher (“Christmas Is”) and the other by Alexander and her long time musical partner Dave Darling (“For Auld Lang Syne”).  The combination of their voices is nothing short of spectacular, and the chemistry is palpable.  This one will quickly become a treasured favorite, and deserves to be put on repeat.

Recommendation:  This one is a no-brainer – you simply must Get it and play it again and again.

Get it or forget it – Sterling Infinity, I See Rivers, The Chamanas, Rocket 3, Escape Goat

We’re back on a Wednesday for another round of Get it or Forget it.  We have five new bands for you to check out, so let’s get this party rolling.

Artist Name Sterling Infinity

Album NameSterling Infinity (Deluxe)

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  EDM/Soul

Track Listing:  1.  Sterling Infinity (Calling); 2.  Put me in Your Mouth; 3.  Wolf Sex; 4.  #Hypnotized – #SexDrone Remix; 5.  Say Hey 2U;  6.  You’ve Changed; 7.  #XWeveLanded – Soul Raptured Remix; 8.  The Infinite One -1- Sterling Infinity; 9.  #Hypnotized (Pyramid Black Club Remix); 10.  #Hypnotized (Baby Girl); 11.  #Hypnotized – #SexDrone Remix (radio version); 12.  Xstacy We’ve Landed

Publicist:  EMPKT PR

Review:  Listening to the lyrics of these intense dance tunes, it’s hard to believe that Sterling Infinity was a former gospel singer.  What he is now is the reincarnation of Prince, and his lyrics are filled with sexual images and innuendos, superimposed over a driving dance beat.  These songs will definitely get you moving on the dance floor.  Apparently, he is hoping you really like “#Hypnotized,” as there are four versions of the song on this album.  It is hard to get an accurate impression of the singer from these dance tunes, and we hope that he releases some more lyric-driven songs in the future like “Say Hey 2U” and “You’ve Changed,” which could do well on the radio.

Recommendation:  If you love to dance, then this is your album.  If you prefer songs with substance, then you might want to forget this one.

Artist NameI See Rivers

Album NameI See Rivers

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Play it Cool; 2.  Give Up; 3.  I Don’t Know; 4.  I Think I Like You

Publicist:  Lander PR

Review:  The first thing that grabs you about I See Rivers is the incredible harmony of their voices.  The songs are well written and would do well on the radio and as placements on television and film.  These ladies could SING, and could probably sell copies of them singing the phone book.  They remind us of such wonderful girl groups as Wilson Phillips, Raining Jain and Redhead Express.  Our only regret is that there are only four tracks on the EP, because we want to hear more.  This one is definitely going on repeat.

Recommendation:  I See Rivers is heading to the top of the charts.  Get this one now.

Artist NameThe Chamanas

Album NameNEA II

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Latin Pop

Track Listing:  1.  La Verdad; 2.  Wedding Cake; 3.  Un Tulipán; 4.  Primera Vez; 5.  Descansar; 6.  Feel it Still; 7.  El Farol; 8.  Saltar; 9.  Alma Ciega; 10.  Desprender

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  The Chamanas hail from the bordertowns of El Paso, Texas and Cuidad Juarez, Mexico, and have already garnered a Latin Grammy nomination for their debut album.  On NEA II, they have re-recorded their sophomore album NEA, and added their first English language songs to the mix.  Behind the amazingly silky smooth vocals of Paulina Reza, the band, composed of Manual Calderon on keys, Hectro Carreon on guitar and Alejandro Bustillios on drums continues the rich musical heritage of Selena, making this incredible Latin pop available to America.  Regardless of whether you know Spanish or not, you will love the sound of this band, and will want to hear them again and again, especially their Spanish cover of Portugal. The Man‘s huge hit, “Feel it Still.”

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one, the sooner the better!

Artist NameRocket 3

Album NameWhat’s the Frequency?

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Pop

Track Listing:  1.  I Choose Love; 2.  Echoes; 3.  What If; 4.  Hip Shot; 5.  Favorite Thing; 6.  Slow Your Roll; 7.  Giving Up; 8.  I Don’t Need You; 9.  Evershine

Publicist:  In Music We Trust

Review:  Portland-based pop-punk band Rocket 3 has been burning up the local music scene since 2012, and released their debut album Burn in 2014.  The album reached #76 on the CMJ Top 200 album charts, and earned the band critical praise.  They return for their sophomore release with further proof that they are not a fluke.  With a sound similar to No Doubt, these guys could just make as huge a splash on Top 40 radio as they have on College Radio.  The songs are generally upbeat, despite the heavy tone of the lyrics.  Overall, the songs are generally relatable, as we have all been through the ups and downs of love and most of us addictions as well.  Listen carefully to the lyrics and be encouraged that you are not alone.

Recommendation:  This one deserves to be in the music library of every pop music lover.  Get it.

Artist NameEscape Goat

Album NameEscape Goat

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Alt Funk/Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Imaginary Saint; 2.  Prisoner’s Dilemma; 3.  Beehive; 4.  Autopilot; 5.  Fortify; 6.  Writing on the Wall

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Edmonton, Canada has provided us with another dose of great alternative indie music in the form of Escape Goat.  Their music is strong, with well-written lyrics, a funky bass beat from Erin Dobbin, and memorable vocals from lead singer Scott Renton.  The band also features amazing guitar licks from guitarist Neil Jackson and a steady drum beat from Kyle Anderson.  The album starts off strong with “Imaginary Saint” and continues to impress all the way through.  Their music contains the best of rock combined with funk, and should make them even more accessible to the American radio scene, especially college radio.  We think the band would do well touring the States, and look forward to the opportunity to catch their live performance.

Recommendation:  If you love to rock, or just love great music, then you simply must Get this one.

Monday mashup 2018: vol. 23

After a month of reviewing the Hollywood Fringe Festival, preparing the nominations and winners listings for the LA Music Critic Awards and coordinating the LA Music Critic Award Winners Showcase, we are ready to get back to our normal schedule.  We received 86 review requests for the month of June, so we will be focusing on those for our Get it or Forget it articles on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  For the Friday edition, we will focus on July releases.  We should be caught up with everything by the end of the first week in August.  We will continue to publish our Monday Mashup article each Monday, starting with today.  We apologize for the delay in reviews, but this will be an annual occurrence as the month of June is dedicated to coverage of the Fringe.  Thank you for your patience.

REDHEAD EXPRESS ANNOUNCE NEW NAME

The Redhead Express are a group of four sisters from Spring Hill, Tennessee who have become synonymous with turning great pop songs into amazing country covers.  However, the group has written some amazing original tunes as well.  As a result, they have decided to release those originals under a different moniker so as not to confuse their fans.  We are happy to announce that those songs will be released under the band name PaperDolls.  We look forward to reviewing their original content, and wish them well in all their efforts.

DIY QUEEN CREATES NEW BAND

Shannon Hurley has been the reigning queen of DIY for several years.  Besides the amazing and award-winning music she has released solo, she and her husband, bassist Ben Eisen, have also released award-winning music under the moniker Lovers & Poets.  Hurley has announced that they have created new music that doesn’t really fit the brand of either of these two formats, so they have created a new platform called Ghost Ability.  Their first EP is now available on BandCamp.

NEW SINGLES

First up this week is Sketti Tangles, another amazing act courtesy of A&R Records.  Their first single, “The Long Way Down,” is a good tune to kick off this week.  Please let us know what you think about it.

Our next single is from 14 year old Evann McIntosh, whose voice will thrill you with its intensity and sweetness.  The song is courtesy of Holy Mattress Money.  Here is her debut single, “Better Now.”  We are sure we will be hearing a lot more from this very promising young artist.

Our third single comes to us courtesy of Blue Élan Records’ rising country music star Amy Wilcox.  We think you will really enjoy the sound of “Bandwagon.”

Do you like to get into “Trouble.”  If so, we can’t think of a better person to do it with than Megan Wilde, whose powerful vocals will blow you away.

Our final single today is “Instagram” from Catey Shaw, a song about relationships and social media.  This one should get your new week off to a great start.

https://soundcloud.com/antifragile_music/instagram-catey-shaw/

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first video this week is from the rocking indie sound of Alana Sweetwater, who has been a friend of this reviewer for many years.  We are sure you will love the retro sound of “Gotta Get Up.”  We are so blessed to have this young lady back in the spotlight.

Our next video has been out for a couple of months, but if we ever needed its message, the time is now.  Please give it up for Fanny Walked the Earth and their feminist power anthem “When We Need Her.”

Our third video this week is the latest from Rvzoo and the Sugar Spun Elephant Band.  Check out the amazingly sweet and retro sounds of “If I Was a Bird.”

Our next video marks the return of veteran electronic artist Andrew Bayer with his latest “Immortal Lover,” featuring Alison May.  Check it out.

Last but not least this week is our final video from Lauren Balthrop and features clips of some of Hollywood’s classic films.  Check out “Don’t Ever Forget” and leave us a comment below with your thoughts.
