Artists Worth Checking Out Ten Amazing Videos Women in Entertainment

Ten amazing videos released in July 2018 (Amended)

*OOPS – Looks like we jumped the gun on one of our videos, as “Dancer Girl” by Tangie Town has not yet been released, and they have asked us to take down the video.  In its place, we are substituting the latest, “Synesthesia,” from Polychrome.  It is a beautiful video by this dream-gaze duo, and we think you will love it.

It’s been a great month for videos, and we featured 20 already in our Monday Mashup.  Here are another 10 amazing ones that were released in the month of July.

Our first video has received praise from NPR.  Here’s Jessica Risker with her intriguing video for her song “Zero Summer Mind.”

Our second video tell us “It’s Alright to Be Me.”  Thank you S U M for this empowering video.

Our third video comes from the brother duo Tangie Town.  It is a chill pop upbeat song that will get you moving on this beautiful Saturday.  Enjoy “Dancer Girl.”

VIDEO REMOVED AT ARTISTS’ REQUEST

Our next video is from the transgender group DreamStates, who ask us what’s “Normal” any way?

Halfway through our video selections, here’s multiple LA Music Critic Award nominee Ben Anderson with the third and final video of you YouTopia series.  Check out “Goodbye Serenity.”

Next up is the latest from a band we recently reviewed.  They’re telling us “The Party’s Over,” but don’t believe it – we still have a few more videos to share.  Here’s The Mountain Carol.

Video number seven is from the Toronto-based trio Ace of Wands.  The cinematography is beautiful and the harmonies are incredible.  Enjoy “10,000 Feet.”

Our next video is from Brother Savannah.  It is called “Time Lapse” and it uses a “family video” type of photography which brings back some great memories and fits perfectly with the theme of the song.  We think you’ll love this one.

Our ninth video this month is an ode to Europe’s famous dance club, the “A1 Club.”  We love the retro-electro sound of the song and the video is killer as well.  Here’s Half Human.

Last but not least is the latest video from McMains.  They wanted to write a “hit song,” and this is what they came up with.  We think they nailed it, and this song should definitely be on the radio.  What do you think? Check out “Don’t Say Goodnight Tonight.”

Get it or forget it – Slowtrip, Waydown Wailers, Tuxedo, Frankie Simone, The Mountain Carol

Happy Independence Day to all our indie music lovers.  We’ve got a great bunch of reviews for you today, so let’s get this show going.

Artist Name: Slowtrip

Album NameBlur

Label:  Anchor Eighty Four Records

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Follow; 2.  02 2004; 3.  Slowtrip – Makeshit Happiness; 4.  Secondary

Publicist:  Earshot Media

Review:  Despite the fact that the members of Slowtrip are also members of three other hardcore bands, the combination created by the consolidation of their combined talents is more indie rock than hardcore.  These four songs offer hope that this is not just another indie rock band.  This band has something to say, and couch their message in solid, hard-hitting rock that will draw listeners in.  This band has definite potential.  If you live in or near their Orange County, California stomping grounds, we highly recommend that you go and check them out.  The vinyl edition of their EP will be released on July 13.

Recommendation:  Definitely give them a try.  This EP is worth the risk.

Artist NameWaydown Wailers

Album NameBackland Blues

Label:  Woodstock Records

Genre:  Blues

Track Listing:  1.  Back Door Woman Blues; 2.  I Want Your Soul; 3.  Done Somebody Wrong; 4.  Another Bump in the Road; 5.  No Mercy; 6.  Dizzy Miss Lizzy; 7.  Every Passing Mile; 8.  Somewhere in the Middle; 9.  I’m on the Hunt; 10.  State of the Union – remix; 11.  Lover of the Bayou

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  Hailing from the area in upstate New York that borders Canada, the Waydown Wailers combine elements of classic rock bands like The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers with British invasion bands like The Byrds to form their own version of gritty, dirty blues.  This album combines eight original tunes with covers of classic tunes from Elmore James (“Done Somebody Wrong”), The Fab Four (“Dizzy Miss Lizzy”) and a deep cut from The Byrds (“Lover of the Bayou”), the song they chose to close out this amazing set of tunes.  This album is great from start to finish, and belongs on your TGIF playlist, especially the sweet “No Mercy” and “Somewhere in the Middle,” which are more roots rock than blues.

Recommendation:  Get out there and Get this one!

Artist NameTuxedo

Album Name III

Label:  Musarañas Records

Genre:  Pop

Track Listing:  1.  III; 2.  Sigue Hablando; 3.  Enviado Desde mi iPhone; 4.  Mi Deporte Favoito; 5.  Intolerancia; 6.  La Espigayla Tormenta; 7.  Victoria; 8.  La Explanada; 9.  La Vida Aqúi

Publicist:  Musarañas Records

Review:  Tuxedo comes to us from Spain, and immediately hit us with some amazing psychedelic and electronic sounds on the title track, a spectacular instrumental tune with layer upon layer that will stay in the listener’s memory long after the song is over.  When the vocals arrive on the second track, they are haunting, rich and very memorable, despite the foreign language.  You can sense the meaning through their delivery and the tone set by the underlying instrumentation.  We would place these guys right beside the Gipsy Kings as proof of the quality of music that still emanates from the Spanish peninsula.  Regardless of whether the song has vocals or not, this band rocks and deserves your attention.

Recommendation:  You must Get this one – it will become one of  your favorites.

Artist NameFrankie Simone

Album Name:  Love//Warrior

Label:  Infinite Companion

Genre:  Pop

Track Listing:  1.  War Paint; 2.  Blow my Mind; 3.  Love//Warrior; 4.  Queer; 5.  Love You Just the Same

Publicist:  Noisy Ghost PR

Review:  Frankie Simone delivers pop music that is reminiscent of Gwen Stefani and Nicki Minaj.  It is music that makes you want to get up and dance and belongs in the house mix of every DJ in America.  Not only is it just plain good music, it also has a message about accepting yourself and reveling in your differences.  It belongs on Top 40 radio, especially “Blow my Mind,” and should be in the catalog of every smart music supervisor, as these songs would do well as placements in film and television, especially the title track.

Recommendation:  If  you love to dance, or you believe that love should conquer hate, then this is the one for you.  Get it now.

Artist NameThe Mountain Carol

Album Name Starkiller and the Banshees

Label:  Third Eye Industries

Genre:  Electro-pop

Track Listing:  1.  Dino; 2.  The Mountain Carol; 3.  Essex Ferry; 4.  Adventure Safari; 5.  Sway; 6.  Shadow Puppets; 7.  The Party’s Over

Publicist:  Behind the Curtains Media

Review:  We featured the music video for the lead track, “Dino,” in our first Monday Mashup in May, and little did we know that it would be just the tip of the iceberg of the amazing material forthcoming from this intriguing band that has a futuristic but retro sound.  You will love their hard driving sound which is reminiscent of new wave bands like Talking Heads.  This is music that definitely sets the mood, and will prepare you for something different.  This band is not afraid to experiment, and still delivers well rounded grooves that you will never forget.  This is not melodic music with smooth vocals – it is raw and edgy stuff that will help the band to rise to the top of the indie world.  We think this album has something for just about everyone.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one.

Monday mashup 2018: vol. 18

Happy Monday – hope you are all recovered from your Cinco de Mayo celebrations.  I spent the weekend working at a Grizzly track meet, played our first softball game of the year, handed out water at a half-marathon to support Veteran Suicide Awareness & Prevention, and got hired by CMS to work the summer concert series at Big Sky Brewery.  I’ve also been working on my schedule of shows to review at the ninth annual Hollywood Fringe Festival, and already have 21 shows confirmed.  Hope to see 40-50 during my two weeks in Los Angeles next month.   We will be publishing our list of most anticipated shows later this month.

We’ve got some news for you today, as well as five new singles and music videos to check out.  Let’s get going.

INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION UPDATE

After reviewing more than 16,000 entries, the 2017 International Songwriting Competition (ISC) has concluded, and a Denver-based indie EDM artist has won the Grand Prize.  Nick Miller, better known to his fans as Illenium, takes home the Grand Prize for his song, “Crawl Outta Love ft. Annika Wells.”  The song was co-written with Annika Wells, Kate Morgan and Michael Blancaniello, and was released on his sophomore album Awake.  Wells and his co-writers will receive $25,000 in cash and more than $35,00 in additional prizes.  Here’s that award-winning song.

STACY JONES BAND TOURING EUROPE AFTER WINNING MORE AWARDS

The Stacy Jones Band, who we reviewed back in September, continue to pile up the accolades.  They recently took home 10 awards at the Best of the Blues, including Best Blues Band, Best Blues Recording (“Love is Everywhere”), Best Female Vocalist, Best Songwriter, Best Harmonica, Best Blues Bass, Best Blues Drummer, Best Blues Writer, Keeping the Blues Alive and Best Non-Festival Blues Event.  To celebrate, the band began their European tour on May 4, playing their first of eight shows in Switzerland.  The band will perform in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands before heading back home next weekend.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single, “Everything Nearly Comes Apart Completely,” comes from Dante Matas.  We love his sound, and think you will too.

Our second single comes all the way from Stockholm, Sweden, and is the debut for Sabine Women.  Here is their song, “Buenos Aires.”

Moving over to Germany for our next single, here is Bonnie Li with “Décroche.”  We love the mix of English, French, and Mandarin.

We rock it up with our fourth single this week from Feel Alright.  Here is their single, “Truth About Us,” from their new album set for release on May 18.

Our final new single today is from one of our favorite up and coming singer-songwriters, who we have been following for several years.  We really think you will love “Sonic Baby” by Santa Barbara-based indie artist Jamey Geston, which just had its radio premiere last night.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first video this week comes from  YouTube darling Megan Davies for her single, “Doesn’t Matter.”  We think they’re on to something, as we are adding this artist to our hot list.  We don’t mind jumping on the bus for her.

Next up is “Dino” by The Mountain Carol.  It is a raw rock song with powerful cinematography.  Definitely check them out.

Our third new music video is an homage to The King.  Check out Australian Susie Scurry and her tune, “The Elvis Hour.”

Our next video is the final single from the debut album for All for Darcy.  Check out “Ordinary Life.”

Our final video this week is “I See You Among the Stars,” a chill tune from Jessica Risker.  Have a wonderful week.
