As September begins to fade away, it’s Monday again, and time for another in our Women in Entertainment series. This week we will focus on Connie Lim aka MILCK, a rising songwriter, performer and producer, and one of the “20 Asian American Musicians You Must Get Behind,” according to buzzfeed.com, who describes Lim’s vocals as ranging “..from a bedroom whisper to a stadium belt.”
Lim has become a fan favorite for her dynamic range of styles, both as a performer and songwriter. As a result, she has amassed an eclectic library of songs that have been used in both film and television, including the Lifetime movie Courting Danger, ABC Family’s Twisted, and MTV’s Real World, as well as in the soundtracks for indie movies like Old Fashioned, Sweet Talk, and Five Hours South.
In 2013 she received a nomination for Best Female CD for A Better Part of Me from Examiner.com’s LA Music Critic Awards and was included in Music Connection Magazine’s annual list of the hottest 100 unsigned live performers.
Despite all of these accolades and fan support, Lim felt that something was missing in her music. After being signed to indie label DigSin, she started searching for that missing part. She wrote song after song, both by herself and with the help of numerous collaborators, while searching for the right producer to help her put it all together. In the end, she found that missing part deep inside, and her latest project, MILCK was born. While her musical style when performing as herself was singer/songwriter/pop, her new incarnation is more soul/indietronica.
What inspires Lim? “I’m inspired by people who dare to throw themselves deeper into the whirlwind of life, regardless of how new or scary something may seem at first.”
Lim debuted as MILCK at the Hotel Cafe on March 7, 2015. Since that time, Lim has decided to concentrate all her efforts on this MILCK project, which involves “indietronica beats that weave around her as she creates empowerment through love, pain, and healing.” It appears she has made a good choice, as her new music has caught the interest of co-writers such as Adrianne Gonzalez of Secret Road and Patrick Taylor of CONWAY. Lim continues to collaborate incessantly to keep getting closer to her truth. MILCK’s music is armed with thick bass and creative drum patterns, tastefully spaced out to give enough room for the catchy melodies and rich, milky vocals. MILCK’s unique lyrics run deep as she sings with a sad/happy yearning for a life that can be beautiful, despite all different forms of darkness. Check out this video for a taste of that sound.
What are Lim’s future plans? “My plans are to continue to live each day as an artist who is grateful for the opportunity to create art, and to continue building my craft as a producer, songwriter, and artist. I will be releasing a MILCK EP in the near future, and hope to continue finding places to share my music in a live setting.”
