Get it or forget it – Ponderosa Grove launches The Debut

It’s New Music Friday, and we are pleased to bring you a new Get it or Forget it of an amazing new band that features one of our long time friends in the indie music world – Candace Devine.

For those of you who don’t know, I spent quite a few years working in the music business as a publicist and manager.  One of the artists that I used to manage was Devine, who I combined with another long-time friend, Dave Yaden, to form David and Devine.  Twelve years ago this month we launched them with a tour of NYC and the east coast.

Devine went on to get married, move to Prescott, Arizona and start a family.  She has now hooked up with Johan Glidden and Drew Hall to form Ponderosa Grove, and we couldn’t be more impressed with their debut album.

Artist Name:   Ponderosa Grove

Album NameThe Debut

Label:  Farasi Records

Genre:  Folk/Americana

Track Listing: 1.  Slowing Down in Real Time 2.  Freedom Ride; 3.  Waterline; 4.  It Never Rains; 5.  Til Tomorrow; 6.  Save my Soul; 7.  You Got Me; 8.  One Seat; 9.  Love; 10.  Holding me Back; 11. Into the Blue

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Every so often a new band hits the market that stops you in your tracks and makes you take notice.  The last band that stopped me was Sugarland with the release of their debut album Twice the Speed of Life . . . until today.  This amazing new album has everything that propelled Sugarland to super-stardom, including great songwriting, impeccable musicianship, and a powerhouse female lead vocalist.

Ponderosa Grove features Devine on lead vocals, sharing the mic with Hall on guitar/vocals and Glidden on guitar/violin/vocals.  They are joined by Cosimo Bohrman on bass, Shawnee Snaketail on keys/synthesizer, Kenneth Crouch on organ/Wurlitzer, Bryan Taylor on drums/percussion, Steph Griffin on trumpet, Paul Ruffner on saxophone, and Vince Porter on tuba/trombone.  Devine also wrote or co-wrote 10 of the 11 tracks, which were produced by Dylan Ludwig and mastered by Hans DeKline.

There is not a weak song on the album, and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear quite a few of them released as singles.  Although the vibe of the album is folk/Americana, there are subtle hints of R&B, jazz and blues, which gives the band a great cross-over window of opportunity.   We do love this entire album, but the tunes that grabbed our attention the most were “Slowing Down in Real Life,” “Waterline” (with obvious inspiration from Fleetwood Mac), the powerful “Save my Soul,” the soulful ballads “You Got Me” and “Into the Blue”, the jazzy “Love” and “Holding me Back.”

Recommendation:  Drop whatever you’re doing and go get this one NOW!!  If you’re lucky enough to be in Prescott, Arizona, they’re celebrating tonight with a Record Release show at Downtown Square at 6:45 p.m.

Get it or forget it – Glen Clark, Tomislav Goluban, Vin Mott, Benny Turner and Cash McCall, Trevor B. Power Band

We have several amazing PR firms that consistently forward us amazing artists to review.  One of those firms is Blind Raccoon.  Today we are featuring five of their clients, four of whom are long-time blues artists, and the fifth is a debut release.  Let’s get going.

Artist NameGlen Clark

Album NameYou Tell Me

Label:  Glenco Records

Genre:  Blues/Roots

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  On his first solo album since 1994, Glen Clark brings all of his influences – honky-tonk, blues, soul, country, gospel and rock and roll to create a mix of American Roots music that will appeal to just about everyone.  This is not your traditional blues but an amazing mix of the best of multiple genres.  The title track sets the tone with its country nuances before heading into the horns and soulful sound of “Accept my Love.”  There is even one cover on the album, “This Old Road,” a ballad penned by long-time friend and collaborator Kris Kristofferson, that shows the softer side of Clark.  You can’t go wrong with this one.  You will treasure every track.

Recommendation:  Run out and Get this one.

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  Croatian singer-songwriter and harmonica player Tomislav Goluban has celebrated the blues for the past 20 years in his native land.  For his 10th studio album, he got the chance to come to America and record this album in Chicago, incorporating all that he had learned into a masterpiece of blues.  Goluban salutes some of the pioneers of his chosen genre, such as Jerry Ricks and Eric Noden, who played guitar and produced the album.  Noden also brought in two of the best blues musicians in E.G. McDaniel and Kenny Smith, and added special guest Joe Filisko into the mix.  The result is an album that will live forever as one of the best examples of Chicago blues.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one!

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  Vin Mott gives us everything that makes the blues special – wailing harmonica, great guitar riffs, soulful vocals and lyrics we can all relate to.  This one is a joy from start to finish, and blues lovers will want to listen to these songs over and over again.  The songs conjure up images of a hot smoky honky-tonk, filled with working class stiffs who just want to relax after a hard week of work.  The songs are down and dirty and take your mind off you own personal troubles.  There isn’t a weak song on the album, and we encourage you to enjoy these tracks as often as you need them.

Recommendation:  This one is a must for every true blues lover.  Go Get it.

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  BMA nominee Benny Turner and Grammy-winning co-producer Cash McCall have been involved in the blues industry for the past 60 years.  As more and more of our blues pioneers are passing on, they decided to go back to their roots to create a masterful work that helps preserve that legacy.  They are helped in their endeavor by pianist Joe Krown, drummer Rodd Bland and three-time Grammy nominee Billy Branch.  The result is a lasting tribute to the best of Chicago’s jazz and blues scenes, and an album that you will treasure for life.  Among the artist they pay tribute to are Howlin’ Wolf, Freddie King, Elmore James, Tampa Red, G.L. Crockett,Willie Dixon, and Sonny Boy Wiliams.

Recommendation:  If you are a lover of the blues and music history, you must have this one for your collection.

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  Trevor B. Power has been a force in indie music for more than 25 years.  On his new band’s debut album, he brings that experience together for a blistering good time.  Powers band ( Billy Gensch on guitars, Mark Enright on bass and Tom DiCianni on drums) are joined in this effort by special guests Bob Lanza, Nick Conti and Bobby Whitlock.  From the first note of the hard rocking road song “Jack,” it is evident that the listener is in for a treat.  The band follows that opening number with the blues shuffle “You Ain’t Actin’ Right,” and the album just keeps getting better after that, culminating in the title track, with Whitlock and his wife Coco Carmel joining into the mix.

Recommendation:  Jump on this train.  Go Get this one today!

Daddy Issues prepares to release debut album

Daddy Issues is an alternative/indie rock band based in San Diego, California, composed of Angela Alvarez on lead vocals and rhythm guitar and Julia “Jules” Whelpton on bass and back-up vocals.

We are excited to introduce this band to you on the eve of the release of their debut album.  Sit back, relax and learn things about this most promising indie rock band.

Daddy Issues #1 Press Shot

IVB:   How long  have you been performing as a band?

DI:  Jules and I met in October of 2013 right after I moved to San Diego from Arizona.  She was playing in a band called the Justice Fire that asked me to come audition, based off a Craig’s List ad I put in the musician community.  Jules and I really hit it off on multiple levels and we soon left that project to start Daddy Issues.  The other members rotate based on availability so we have several lead guitar players and drummers we play with.

IVB:  Who do you consider to be your influences?
DI:  We both love classic rock and were raised on The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, ZZ Top and more.  We also love The Killers, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, No Doubt, Nirvana, and The Pretty Reckless.  Our sound definitely has a 90s throwback feel.

IVB:  What makes your new release so special?

DI:  It’s special to us because it took us so long to finally get it created!  We were working on our sound and our songs for a while, and once we decided we were ready to record, we went through a few different producers until we found the right one.  We didn’t want to put out anything that wasn’t high quality and “radio ready,” and we weren’t really getting what we wanted at first.

We ended up recording with Jim Wirt who produced Incubus, Fiona Apple and others.  Jim moved his studio to Cleveland a few years back where I grew up, and Jules also has family from Ohio, so that’s something else that makes the album special.  We got an LA recording experience at “home,” so that was really cool.  We also got to tour the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while recording, which we absolutely loved.

Overall, the album represents the last three years of hard work, ups and downs, and we’re excited to finally get some music in the hands of our loyal fans.

IVB:  What are your future plans?

DI:  So much!  Videos, tours and more recording.  This is just the beginning!  We are still writing and have some new songs we’re really excited about.

IVB:  Do you have any stories you want to share about your band
            touring, recording, or fan interaction?
DI:  When we were first starting out, our guitar player was only 20.  We played at a 21+ venue for a battle of the bands, and the security people kept a close eye on him, only letting him come in to play the show and insisting he leave as soon as we were done.  Later in the night, he hopped the fence in the back and was sitting at the bar (not drinking), but got caught anyway.  As a result, we were kicked out of the battle and the word spread pretty fast.  Rumor had it that we were banned from the venue as well.  It actually helped to put us on the map here in San Diego, because we were new and people were talking about how scandalous we were to get kicked out of the battle.  We’ve since played that venue again, so there aren’t any hard feelings anymore.
Then earlier this year while attending NAMM, Jules and I went to one of the parties.  There were a lot of people there listening to the bands and she decided she wanted to crowd surf for the first time.  I stood up on one of the tables to keep track of where she was, but she spent the next 20-30 minutes getting passed around the crowd.  The next day, she was covered in bruises and as we walked around the show floor, everyone recognized us and wanted to talk about it. The best part was a guy that said, “In the 20 years I’ve been attending NAMM, I think that’s the first time I’ve seen someone crowd surf.”
IVB:  What types of social media do you use?
DI:  We have a website and Facebook pages, and we prefer Twitter and Instagram.  Check us out live as well, with upcoming shows at the Roar Room in Glendale on September 9 and our CD release show at the House of Blues in San Diego on September 10.

Atoms and Void bring new life to prog rock

Atoms and Void cannot accurately be considered a “band,” although the music they produce is amazing and unequalled in today’s marketplace.  Rather, they are a unique collaboration of musicians with a joint mission to breathe new life into the indie music scene.

At the heart of Atoms and Void is a friendship and songwriting collaboration between guitarist and lyricist Arlie Carstens, formerly of the band Juno, and audio engineer Eric Fisher.

According to their official release, “the two began recording songs onto 4-tracks, answering machines, micro-cassette recorders, laptops and iPhones.  They recorded in cramped apartments, empty houses and tiny rehearsal spaces in Los Angeles. They recorded in real and make believe studios in Seattle, Shoreline, Sunland, Santa Monica, Studio City, Echo Park, Angelino Heights, Highland Park and downtown Los Angeles, (as well as) Portland, San Francisco, Boston, Austin, Mexico City and New York.”  In total they recorded 33 songs, of which they chose 12 for their debut album, And Nothing Else, which is being released on vinyl on May 20, 2016 on Artic Rodeo Records.

The list of musicians and audio engineers who have joined them on this album is impressive, and includes Nate Mendel (Sunny Day Real Estate, Foo Fighters, Juno, Lieutenant), Gabe Carter (Juno), Jay Clarke (Pretty Girls Make Graves, Jaguar Love), Cory Murchy (Minus the Bear), Morgan Henderson (Blood Brothers, Fleet Foxes, Cave Singers), Rosie Thomas (Sufjan Stevens), Eric Akre (Treepeople, Built To Spill, Juno), Joel Cuplin (Constant Lovers, Triumph of Lethargy), Josh Myers (The Fire Theft, Jeremy Enigk, Rosie Thomas), Drew O’Doherty (Ted Leo & the Pharmacists), Griffin Rodriguez (Icy Demons, Need New Body), Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Big Business, Lieutenant), Kory Kruckenberg (J. Tillman, The Revenant), Jenna Conrad (Avians Alight, Damien Jurado), and Lena Simon (Pollens, La Luz, Kairos).

The album has already spawned three videos, and “Feathers from a Bird” is worthy of inclusion at major film festivals as a true work of art.

If you are a true audiophile and love real music, we highly recommend you check out Atoms and Void.  For more info on them, check out their website and Facebook pages and most definitely subscribe to their YouTube channel.

My Brothers and I to tour in support of debut album Don’t Dream Alone

My Brothers and I, an alt-pop band from Portland, Oregon, are going on tour to support their debut album on Expunged Records, Don’t Dream Alone.  The band recently debuted their new video “Scars” on entertainment website PopWrapped.
“We’re excited to keep sharing our music with new people and reconnect with the fans we already have,” says My Brother And I’s front man, David Wurgler, regarding the band’s upcoming tour.
Amazon’s “The Next Program” recently selected the band as “The Next Big Thing,” and the release of Don’t Dream Alone has helped to establish the band as one of the Northwest’s premiere alt-pop bands.  The band is composed of the three Wurgler brothers, David on lead vocals, Erik on bass and vocals, and Scott on drums, who are joined by childhood friends Jordan Roach on guitar and Johnny Iliyn on keys and vocals.  This diversity brings a wide range of influences to their music and creates a melodic, soulful, and danceable sound throughout the 11-track debut release, including warm vocal harmonies, luscious grooves, and undeniable hooks.

The tour kicked off on January 27 with a performance at Menlo College in San Francisco, California, followed by a performance the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California the next night.  The tour continues through the month of March with the following  schedule:
2/5/16 – Sunset Tavern (w/Kris Orlowski), Ballard, WA
2/12/16 – KLCC Microbrew Fest – Eugene, OR
3/3/16 – Mississippi Studios – Portland, OR
3/4/16 – Hotel Utah – San Francisco, CA
3/5/16 – Hotel Cafe – Los Angeles, CA
3/6/16 – Cal State Fullerton – Fullerton, CA
3/8/16 – Lion’s Lair – Denver, CO
3/9/16 – The Demo – St. Louis, MO
3/12/16 – Val’s List (Private show) – Chicago, IL
3/24/16 – Sam Bond’s Garage – Eugene, OR
3/25/16 – Hard Rock Cafe – Seattle, WA
3/26/16 – The Big Dipper – Spokane, WA
“You can always expect our songs to sound like they do on the album,” adds Erik when describing the band’s live show.  “We take pride in our live performance.  If you’ve fallen in love with our album, you won’t be disappointed when you hear the songs live.  You’ll just get to experience them in a new way.  We’ll spice something up here or there but David’s voice really is that good, no studio tricks made that voice!”
Included in the tour set list will be cuts from Don’t Dream Alone, a few choice covers, as well as a new song entitled “Tell Me.” “It’s got an interesting story behind it,” comments Erik.  “It’s one of the first songs we ever wrote, but it’s gone through three total face lifts with the style in which we play it.  So, even if you think you’ve heard it before, you haven’t heard it like this.”
For more info on this funky new band, check out their website and Facebook pages and follow them on Twitter and Instagram.
