Get it or forget it – Phantom Phunk, VTCN Radio, John Verity, Matt Westerman, Lavender Child

Well, it’s our final Get it or Forget it for 2017.  We will have reviewed 316 albums and EPs this year, with only 40 or so more to review after today’s article, plus another 15 requests for the new year.  We’ll knock the 2017 ones out early in January, as well as our list of the Best Albums and EPs of 2017 before launching into our nominations for the LA Music Critic Awards for the second half of 2017 and the new requests for 2018.  That is going to be a gargantuan task, since we have had more than 200 submissions during that period (225 to be exact), and so many of them are amazing.  Stay tuned.  In the meantime, here are our final five reviews for this year.

Artist NamePhantom Phunk

Album NameTurtle Stand

Label:  Harmonic Factory

Genre:  Alternative Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Back Seat Sax; 2.  My Hands; 3.  Sleepy Willow; 4.  Turtle Stand; 5.  Paper Neck; 6.  Raymond Saunder’s Funhouse; 7.  Shadow Lawn; 8.  Memory’s a Ghost; 9.  Steep Your Body; 10.  People Watcher; 11.  Arecibo’s Lullaby

Publicist:  Presstown PR

Review:  Phantom Phunk packs a lot of energy into their songs, mixing alternative rock and powerpop into a bundle of interesting indie funk.  The first track is a little out there, but the band hits their stride on the second track, “My Hands,” which was also their first single.  The goodness continues with the instrumental track, “Sleepy Willow,” before they come back harder with solid vocals on the title track.  “Paper Neck” starts out as just another crazy instrumental, before the vocals kick in and it becomes almost prog rock-like in its sound.  We also like “Shadow Lawn,” “Memory’s a Ghost,” and “People Watcher.

Recommendation:  If you’re feeling adventurous, then give this one a spin.  We guarantee it’s different from your average indie alternative rock sound.

Artist NameVTCN Radio

Album NameMydriase

Label:  Five to Six Records

Genre:  Experimental

Track Listing:  1.  Mydriase; 2.  Riddle Song; 3.  Subtle Body; 4.  Venus Flytrap; 5.  Moon Motion; 6.  Late Night Shuttle; 7.  Bucket List; 8.  POP; 9.  Wet Widow

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  We love the sound of the rain, and the way this album starts, with the rain, hooting owls and other sounds is very interesting, soothing and reflective.  There are no words to describe the genre their music falls into, so I guess we’ll call it experimental environmental bliss.  It definitely shows a classical influence, as well as that of those nature albums you put on as white noise.  Still it retains the beauty of nature as well as the intensity of good music, and is the type of album you can leave on repeat for your daily musical backdrop.  It’s not radio friendly, but is still commercially viable, and would make a great soundtrack for documentaries and commercials.  Best track is “Subtle Body.”

Recommendation:  Another one for the adventurous type, or just someone who likes to have music in the background of their life.  It’s definitely worth checking out.

Artist Name John Verity

Album NameBlue to my Soul

Label:  VaVoom Records

Genre:  Blues

Track Listing:  1/  Such a Feeling; 2.  This old Dog; 3.  Blues in Heaven; 4.  The Blues is my Business; 5.  Never Gonna Change; 6.  Alabama Blues; 7.  Say the Word; 8.  Wasted Years; 9.  A Better Way; 10.  Hold Your Head Up

Publicist:  ABIK Promotions

Review:  This is the 20th album for John Verity, and he continues to show why he has lasted so long in the indie world.  This release contains six original tunes, as well as four covers, including the classic rock smash “Hold Your Head Up.”  He hits the ground running with “Such a Feeling,” and the album just takes off from there.  The first track  has a “Journey” feel, almost more like classic rock than the blues, which he returns to with his second and third tracks, “This Old Dog” and “Blues in Heaven,” before turning in spotless covers of “The Blues is my Business,” “Never Gonna Change,” and the totally relevant story contained in “Alabama Blues.”  He closes out the album just as strongly, with the rocking “Say the Word,” the soulful “Wasted Years” and “A Better Way,” and his final cover.  What an incredible album.

Recommendation:  This one is a no-brainer – Get it now!

Artist NameMatt Westerman

Album NameLife Out Loud

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Don’t Give up on You; 2.  One Fine Day; 3.  Wait and See; 4.  Flower Dress; 5.  She’s More; 6.  Sunrise

Publicist:  Far Digital PR

Review:  Matt Westerman’s music is like a beacon in a foggy sky, illuminating the hope that gives a promise of better days in the future.  His voice is soothing, his lyrics are well-crafted, and the simple accompaniment is the perfect supplement to make his songs well rounded and perfect for your musical library.  These songs are memorable and deserve industry attention for both radio and future placements in television and film.  Our favorite tracks are “Don’t Give up on You,” “One Fine Day,” “Wait and See,” “Flower Dress,” actually the whole damn album!

Recommendation:  Definitely get this one.

Artist NameLavender Child

Album NameReflections

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Dream Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Beautiful Landscapes; 2.  Plutomania; 3.  Happy Illusions; 4.  Reflections (Interlude); 5.  Reflections

Publicist:  Auteur Research

Review:  In a similar vein to VTCN Radio, but with a more meditative and reflection vibe, Lavender Child brings their unique style of music to the world on their debut EP, Reflections.  As you can imagine, this album is perfect for your yoga workouts, your introspective reflections and mediation time.  It reminds us of the music of Enya with a more environmental sound.  It’s not for everyone, but we happy to appreciate its uniqueness.  Hopefully, you will too.

Recommendation:  We bet you don’t have anything like this in your current library.  We recommend you add this EP.

Get it or forget it – Peter Simpson, Downfall 2012; Peter Oren, The Zephyr Bones, Sierra Blanca

So the heavy snow never materialized but we still got lots of freezing rain.  Luckily, today was a better day, and our Lady Griz won again to go 2-0 in the conference.  In celebration, here are five more reviews for your New Year’s Eve Eve.  Enjoy them.

Artist NamePeter Simpson

Album NameReturn of the Dilettante

Label:  Verified Records

Genre:  Alternative Rock

Track Listing:  1.  All my Tomorrows; 2.  She’s Gone; 3.  Stain in the Sand; 4.  Stare at the Sun; 5.  Every Time we say Goodbye

Publicist:  None

Review:  After being a part of the Australian music scene for 20 years, beginning in the 80’s, Peter Simpson has returned as a solo artist, recording the songs he has been writing during his 20 years of absence from music.  These five songs bode well for his potential, and reaffirm his role as a musical pioneer.  All of the songs are great, and deserve industry attention as a voice of the future.  They have a strong guitar soundtrack, well-written lyrics, and capable and strong vocals.  We especially love “She’s Gone” and “Stare at the Sun.”

Recommendation:  Definitely give this one a listen.  We encourage you to Get it and see what we mean.

Artist NameDownfall 2012

Album NameWe Welcome the Pain

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Metal

Track Listing:  1.  Take Control; 2.  Find Your Enemy; 3.  Attack Point; 4.  We Welcome the Pain; 5.  Fooled Once; 6.  Save the Queen; 7.  Don’t Give In (Nine More Lives); 8.  The Mission; 9.  Forward Movement; 10.  Make us One; 11.  End Credits

Publicist:  Yvonne Laughlin

Review:  With strong drums and guitar riffs, vocals that are sung and screamed and a strong message, Downfall 2012 is not your typical metal band.  As such, they will find an audience beyond the normal metal crowd, as their music is good enough to deserve industry attention.  The first track, “Take Control,” would work on radio, and be perfect for placement in television and film.  It firmly establishes this band as a voice for their generation.  It is hard to believe that this incredible music comes from a trio of musicians.  Besides “Take Control,” we also love “Find Your Enemy,” “Don’t Give In (Nine More Lives),” “The Mission,” “Forward Movement,” and “Make us One.”

Recommendation:  If you are a die-hard metal fan, then you must add this one to your collection.  For any true music lover, we recommend you also consider it.  If you don’t like rock music, then you’d best forget it.

Artist NamePeter Oren

Album NameAnthropocene

Label:  Western Vinyl

Genre:  Americana

Track Listing:  1.  Burden of Proof; 2.  Anthropocene; 3.  Falling Water; 4.  Chain of Command; 5.  Throw Down; 6.  Canary in a Coal Mine; 7.  New Gardens; 8.  Pictures from Spain; 9.  River and Stone; 10.  Welcome, Goodbye

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  We can pretty much guarantee you’ve never heard a voice like Peter Oren.  It’s part Leonard Cohen, part Josh Turner, and totally unique, with its deep bass throatiness.  The lyrics are cleverly written, and the studio musicians he and his producer Ken Coomer have assembled are some of the best in Nashville, including Michael Webb (John Fogerty), Maureen Murphy (Zac Brown Band), Sam Wilson (Sons of Bill) and Laur Jaomets (Sturgill Simpson).  This is an album for reflective times when you just want to separate yourself from the world around you.  We really love the title track, “Falling Water,” “Throw Down,” “New Gardens,” “Pictures From Spain,” and “River and Stone.”

Recommendation:  Get it – you’ll thank us later.

Artist NameThe Zephyr Bones

Album NameSecret Place

Label:  La Castanya

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Black Lips; 2.  Hurricanes; 3.  I’ve Lost my Dinosaur; 4.  Jugular Child on the Carousel; 5.  Las Olas; 6.  Penny’s Week; 7.  Secret Place; 8.  September; 9.  Telephone; 10.  The Arrow of our Youth

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  Light, dreamy, airy and upbeat – these words describe the awesomeness of Secret Place, the debut album of The Zephyr Bones.  It is music without compartmentalization, free of genre restraint, and perfect for all types of musical tastes.  We previously shared their music video for “Telephone” in our Monday Mashup column on December 12, but that song was only the tip of the iceberg for what is included in their album.  Best tracks include “I’ve Lost my Dinosaur,” “Jugular Child on the Carousel,” “Las Olas,” “Penny’s Week,”” the title track, “September,” “Telephone.,” and “The Arrow of our Youth.”

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one.

Artist NameSierra Blanca

Album NameHonorable Mention

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Folk

Track Listing:   1.  Broken Gun; 2.  Book; 3.  Paint the Road; 4.  Beds; 5.  Former Core

Publicist:  Effective Immediately PR

Review:  Jethro Gaglione aka Sierra Blanca is a self-taught, multi-instrumentalist who began playing music while in Mexico as part of his parents’ missionary team.  Beginning with keys, he has also mastered bass, guitar and drums since moving back to the States in 2002.  He created the Sierra Blanca name when he relocated to Nashville in 2015.  With his rich vocals and well-written lyrics, he has the complete package to continue to grow as an artist, and his music should receive serious industry consideration.  All five songs on the EP are amazing, but we really love “Broken Gun,” “Book,””Paint the Road,” and “Beds.”

Recommendation:  Get it, sooner rather than later.

Get it or forget it – Tony Lovato/MEST, The Marias, Orissa, Belle Miners, The Speedlights

It’s the final Friday of 2017, and we are bracing for a huge winter storm.  Good thing we’ve got five more reviews for you today to help get you ready for NYE.  Enjoy them.

Artist NameTony Lovato/MEST

Album NameBroken Down II

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Acoustic

Track Listing:  1.  Say so Long; 2.  Paradise (122nd Highland St.); 3.  It’s Over; 4.  Burning Bridges; 5.  Until I Met You; 6.  Chelsea; 7.  3’z my Lucky Number; 8.  Another Day; 9.  M.D.M.A.; 10.  This Time; 11.  Opinions; 12.  Can’t Take This

Publicist:  Earshot Media

Review:  Tony Lovato is the frontman for Chicago punk rock group MEST.  He has released Broken Down II as the second in a series of acoustic albums of the band’s material.  They say that the mark of a good rock song is if it sounds as good acoustically as with the full band.  If that is the case, then these songs must be masterpieces, because the acoustic versions retain the power of the lyrics and the strength of the musicians behind them.  These stripped down arrangements give the songs a style similar to Hanson.  The album starts off strong with “Say so Long,” and just takes off from there.  There are quite a few F-bombs (especially in “Until I Met You”), but overall the sound is appropriate for most.  Best tracks include “Say So Long,” “Burning Bridges,” “Chelsea,” “3’z my Lucky Number,” “M.D.M.A.,” and “This Time.”

Recommendation:  This one’s a keeper.  We highly recommend you Get it.

Artist NameThe Marías

Album NameSuperclean Vol. 1

Label:  Superclean Records

Genre:  Jazz/Latin/Soul

Track Listing:  1.  I Don’t Know You; 2.  Basta Ya; 3.  I Like It; 4.  Only in my Dreams; 5.  Superclean; 6.  Déjate Llevar

Publicist:  Cosmica Artists

Review:  What an awesome and original sound The Marias bring on their debut release.  The sound is soulful, jazzy, with a Latin edge that is perfect for that end of the day cocktail while you chill from a long day of work.  The sweet lead vocals of Maria are backed by all the other members of the band, creating a funky and jazzy harmony that are only topped by the keys of Edward James.  This band should do well in a myriad of radio formats, including R&B/soul, pop and Latin.  They deserve serious industry attention.  Best tracks include “I Don’t Know You,” “I Like It,” and the title track.  In addition, both of the Latin tracks are wonderful.

Recommendation:  Take a chance on these guys and Get their debut EP.

Artist NameOrissa

Album Name Resurrection

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Prog Rock/Metal

Track Listing:  1.  Circle X; 2.  Tara; 3.  Resurrection; 4.  Shades of Grey; 5.  Dissolution; 6.  Primordial; 7.  Verse V; 8,  Blue Communion

Publicist:  Effective Immediately PR

Review:  On first reflection, the sound is reminiscent of two pioneers of rock – Kansas and Rush, with a heavy influence from Metallica.  The guitars do not overwhelm you but rather stimulate and uplift, and fit the lyrical content to a “T.”  This new album goes far beyond the band’s metal roots, and is the result of a very successful Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $20,000.  The band has obviously spent the money well, as the resulting album is one of the best rock albums of the year.  Best tracks include “Tara,” the title track, “”Shades of Grey,” and “Verse V.”

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one!

Artist NameBelle Miners

Album NamePowerful Owl

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Folk/Pop

Track Listing:  1.  25 Years; 2.  Fall in Love with Me; 3.  Dance in my Kitchen; 4.  Who I Was; 5.  Strange World; 6.  Stop Sign; 7.  Junkyard; 8.  Night Flight; 9.  Periphery; 10.  You, the Birds and I

Publicist:  Penney and Logan

Review:  Were they not from Canada and Australia, you might mistake their sound for just another of the “Hotel Café” crowd.  These three ladies, however, have developed their own quirky folk style on their own both north and south of our border, and their music is the perfect fit for American radio.  Their harmonies are seamless, the songs are upbeat, and the American music industry needs to pay attention.  The entire album is noteworthy, but we really loved “Dance in my Kitchen,” “Who I Was,” “Strange World,” “Junkyard,” and “You, the Birds and I.”

Recommendation:  If you love great harmonies and upbeat music, then definitely Get this one.

Artist NameThe Speedlights

Album NameNight Driver

Label:  Jigsaw Records

Genre:  Powerpop

Track Listing:  1.  After Tonight; 2.  She’s Alright; 3.  What’s it Gonna Take; 4.  Blame it on the Stereo; 5.  She’ll be There; 6.  Head in the Clouds; 7.  Summer Nights; 8.  Out of Sorts; 9.  Try to Forget You; 10.  Pawn Takes King

Publicist:  Beatkid Records

Review:  The Speedlights’ sound is reminiscent of Rock of Ages, with a powerful pop/indie rock groove and vocals reminiscent of Tom Petty.  Their vintage sound would also work well for placement in television and film, as they truly capture the 80’s new wave/rock feel, sorta like The Cars.  The musical score more than makes up for the sometimes wavering vocals, which match their obvious influences.  Among the best tracks are “After Tonight,” “What’s it Gonna Take,” “Blame it on the Stereo,” “She’ll be There,” and “Head in the Clouds.”

Recommendation:  If you love the music of the 80’s, and powerpop/ new wave rock, then this is the album for you.  Go Get it!

Get it or forget it – Tommy Emmanuel and David Grisman, Robert Francis, Kansas, Leslie Clio, King Park

And the quest to complete 2017 review requests continues with another five for you today, including the spectacular live release by the one and only Kansas.  I know we normally don’t review major label acts, but who could pass up the opportunity to review one of the greatest bands ever?  We think you’ll understand when you check it out.  Here we go.

Artist NameTommy Emmanuel and David Grisman

Album NamePickin’

Label:  Acoustic Disc Records

Genre:  Bluegrass

Track Listing:  1.  Zorro’s Last Ride; 2.  Cinderella’s Fella; 3.  CGP & Dawg; 4.  Farm & Fun Time; 5.  Newly Wedding; 6.  Sweet Georgia Brown; 7.  Standing Rock; 8.  Dawg’s Waltz; 9.  Tipsy Gypsy; 10.  Tracy’s Tune; 11.  Port Townsend Blues; 12.  Waltzing Matilda

Publicist:  MSO PR

Review:  Two of the world’s premier musicians, guitarist Tommy Emmanuel aka CGP and mandolinist David Grisman aka Dawg have combined their talents on this amazing album of acoustic and bluegrass originals and covers.  This is the album for true music lovers, especially those who love the sound of guitar picking and mandolin.  This album is a total treat from start to finish.  We especially love the covers of “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “Waltzing Matilda,” and their original “Tipsy Gypsy,” but you can’t go wrong with any song on this album.

Recommendation:  If you truly love the art of making music, then this album is a must-have.  Get it now!

Artist NameRobert Francis

Album NameIndian Summer

Label:  Aeronaut Records

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  The Brand; 2.  Burn Out; 3.  Goldwing; 4.  Unspoken Rule; 5.  This Old House; 6.  Forgiveness is a Destination; 7.  The Magic; 8.  Modoc County; 9.  Joseph Campau; 10.  Dark Windows; 11.  Shots Ring Out; 12.  Indian Summer; 13.  Flatlining

Publicist:  Perpetual Media Relations

Review:  One of the things that makes this album from Robert Francis stand out is that he played every instrument on the album, and also produced it along with Marc Gabor.  This is a rare trait in musicians.  There are a lot of multi-instrumentalists out there, but few who can write, sing and play all the necessary instruments.  The music has a 60’s vibe with strong influence from Jim Morrison and The Doors, making these extremely well written songs all the more worthy of industry attention.  These songs go well as a musical backdrop for a weekend party, especially for us baby boomers.    Best tracks include “Burn Out,” “Goldwing,” “Unspoken Rule,” “This Old House,” “The Magic,” “Modoc County,” “Joseph Campau,” “Dark Windows,” and “Indian Summer.”

Recommendation:  An amazing effort from an amazing musician – definitely Get this one.

Artist NameKansas

Album Name Leftoverture Live & Beyond

Label:  Inside Out Music

Genre:  Classic Rock/Prog Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Icarus II; 2.  Icarus; 3.  Point of Know Return; 4.  Paradox; 5.  Journey from Mariabronn; 6.  Lamplight Symphony; 7.  Dust in the Wind; 8.  Rhythm in the Spirit; 9.  The Voyage of Eight Eighteen; 10.  Section 60; 11.  Carry on Wayward Son; 12.  The Wall; 13.  What’s on my Mind; 14.  Miracles out of Nowhere; 15.  Opus Insert; 16.  Questions of my Childhood; 17.  Cheyenne Anthem; 18.  Magnum Opus; 19.  Portrait (He Knew)

Publicist:  Big Picture Media

Review:  Kansas has been a mainstay in rock music for almost a half-century, and was one of the pioneers of prog rock.  It is only fitting that they recorded their concert tour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of their seminal and best selling album, Leftoverture.  Producer Jeff Glixman, who also produced the original album, pulled these 19 songs from 12 different shows that were recorded during the tour.  The songs include some of the band’s greatest hits, deep cuts not previously played live, tunes from their last studio album The Prelude Implicit, as well as the entirety of Leftoverture.  The result is a little slice of audio heaven that is sure to bring back memories for those of us who have been around to see this band develop into one of the greatest bands ever.  Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren, the band’s principle songwriters, have given so much to rock and roll and music in general, and this live album proves that Kansas is still as great today as they were when they formed back in 1973.

Recommendation:  Don’t even think about it – you simply must Get your copy today!

Artist Name Leslie Clio

Album NamePurple Unplugged

Label:  Embassy of Music

Genre:  Soul/Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Survivor; 2.  Game Changer; 3.  Lies are Gold; 4.  Why Cry; 5.  Riot

Publicist:  Guerilla Music Promotion

Review:  Tackling a cover by Destiny Child is a daunting task for the most seasoned vocalist, yet Leslie Clio pulls it off without a hitch.  We like her laid-back approach to “Survivor” and lyrical updates and think this is just the icing on the cake that is the potential for Clio.  Her keys and vocal arrangement of “Game Changer” is just that, and barely prepares you for the amazing conclusion of the track.  “Lies of Gold” is a haunting R&B masterpiece that would be perfect for placement in television or film.  “Why Cry” and “Riot” are both deserving of radio airplay now, and are reminiscent of Kelly Clarkson.  This is an artist to keep an eye on, because she has the chops to soon stand shoulder to shoulder with Beyoncé and Clarkson.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one.

Artist Name King Park

Album NameThe Light I Can’t See

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Alternative Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Stay; 2.  Grey; 3.  Words; 4.  Him

Publicist:  Auteur Research

Review:  With a rousing rock sound like Linkin Park meets Soundgarten and Blue October. King Park is a band that possesses strong writing skills, raw and emotional vocals, and a message that will resound and resonate long after the song has ended.  All four songs are memorable, and even music lovers who don’t necessarily dig alternative rock should find something they like in their sound.  The lyrics are so well crafted and delivered that they could stand alone as poetry, and the rocking accompaniment implants the words in your brain, creating an earwig that won’t die.  In our humble opinion, these guys are Grammy bound, and should soon dominate the alternative rock community.

Recommendation:  We highly recommend that you get up and Get this one!

Get it or forget it – Franks and Deans, The Innocent Bystanders, Pistoleros, Jason Hawk Harris, Kaylee Keller

The snow continues to fall here in Montana, with more than two feet additional snow forecast by the end of the year.  Guess I’ll have some time to try and review the remaining 60 or so requests for review.  No promises that I can get them all done by the end of the month, but I’m gonna do my best.  Here are another five for your reflection.

Artist NameFranks & Deans

Album NameThe Best You’re Gonna Feel All Day

Label:  SquidHat Records

Genre:  Punk Rock & Roll/Ska

Track Listing:  1.  Fly me to the Moon; 2.  Chain Gang; 3.  Just a Gigolo; 4.  Splish Splash; 5.  Sway; 6.  Down in Mexico; 7.  Feeling Good; 8.  I’ll be Glad When You’re Dead (You Rascal You); 9.  Luck be a Lady; 10.  Hello Mary Lou; 11.  The Candy Man; 12.  That’s Life

Publicist:  SquidHat Records PR

Review:  Franks & Deans are a Las Vegas legend, transforming songs of the Rat Pack into punk rock and ska classics.  On their sophomore release, they also tackle more modern songs from the likes of Sam Cooke/The Pretenders,  Louis Prima/David Lee Roth, Bobby Darin, The Coasters, Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, and Ricky Nelson,   This is a party album and the perfect background for time with your friends.  It is a blast to hear these songs totally re-arranged in a truly original way.  We would really love to see these guys live, because it must be a blast to hear them in that arena.  This is one of the best, if not the best, cover albums we have ever reviewed.  Imagine Sinatra’s “Luck be a Lady” as ska.  Unbelievable, but they pull it off with flair.

Recommendation:  Don’t think twice – Get this one today!

Artist NameThe Innocent Bystanders

Album NameAttractive Nuisance

Label:  Bystander Records

Genre:  Stax/Ska

Track Listing:  1.  Gotta get Outta Here; 2.  Highways; 3.  Emerald Eyes; 4.  Working Man’s Daughter

Publicist:  None

Review:  We have been fortunate to have seen The Innocent Bystanders back when we lived in San Diego.  This is their first album of original music, and we couldn’t be happier.  We only wish there was more than four songs.  Fortunately, the four songs are enough to whet your appetite and make you crave more.  These songs are super radio friendly and deserve major industry attention.  “Gotta get Outta Here” has some amazing keys, sax and a Jimmy Buffett vibe, while “Highways” has more of a Chrissy Hind/The Pretenders feel.  “Emerald Eyes” has a very jazzy blues kind of vibe, while the final track, “Working Man’s Daughter,” adds some flute to the guitar to give it a Seals and Croft/Steely Dan feel.  This band is truly a Southern California treasure that we would love to see shared with the rest of the world.  At least London is already on board the train!

Recommendation:  This band may be a guilty pleasure, but you simply must Get their music.  By the way, it’s free to download.

Artist NamePistoleros

Album NameSilver

Label:  Fervor Records

Genre:  Rock

Track Listing:  1.  You are not Alone; 2.  Lost and Gone; 3.  Did you Wake up all Alone; 4.  Living in the Dark; 5.  Parts of Yesterday; 6.  Always You and Me; 7.  NYC Queen; 8.  You Belong; 9.  Gimme Gimme (explicit); 10.  Summertime; 11.  Don’t Break my Heart; 12.  Broken Man

Publicist:  Noisy Ghost PR

Review:  The Pistoleros have been around for 25 years, and have gone through quite a few personnel changes during that time.  On this special album, three of the founding members return to contribute to this momentous occasion, and the result is breathtaking.  The band started out as The Chimeras and was founded by the legendary Doug Hopkins of the Gin Blossoms, who added Mark and Lawrence Zubia, Scott Andrews and Mark Riggs.  The band was signed to Hollywood Records and EMI Publishing before changing their name to the Pistoleros.  Hopkins and Riggs were the first to leave, but Riggs has recently rejoined the band after an absence and his presence is truly felt.  You can definitely feel the Gin Blossoms influence on the band’s sound, making every song radio friendly and worthy of industry attention.  Best songs include “You are not Alone,” “Lost and Gone,” “Living in the Dark,” “Parts of Yesterday,” “Always You and Me,” “NYC Queen,” “You Belong,” “Summertime,” and “Don’t Break my Heart.”

Recommendation:  This one is a true keeper – rush out and Get it now!

Artist NameJason Hawk Harris

Album NameFormaldehyde Tobacco and Tulips

Label:  Free Man Records

Genre:  Americana

Track Listing:  1.  Phantom Limb; 2.  Give Myself to You; 3.  Tell me I’m Good for You; 4.  I’m Afraid; 5.  The Smoke and the Stars

Publicist:  Lucky Bird Media

Review:  If you are a fan of indie folk band The Show Ponies (one of our favorites), you are already familiar with the amazing guitar work of Jason Hawk Harris.  Like the Foo Fighters’ Chris Shifflett, Harris is doing some of his best work as a solo artist.  This five-song EP gives Harris the chance to try some things differently with a more Americana feel than The Show Ponies style allows.  He starts it off with the hard-hitting “Phantom Limb,” which explains the album title within its lyrics.  “Give Myself to You” has a Lumineers feel, with incredible guitar picking and lyrics that are visceral in their clarity, painting a word picture that is crystal clear.  “Tell me I’m Good for You” has a sound and a story like a good country song.  Harris totally changes direction on “I’m Afraid,” with its rapid-fire drums and Garth Brooks-like lyrics and delivery.  He closes out the EP with “The Smoke and the Stars,” an eerie, haunting tune that returns to his Americana/alt-country roots.  All in all, this is an excellent solo effort, and deserves strong industry attention.

Recommendation:  One of 2017’s best EPs, you had better Get it now.  This artist is going places.

Artist NameKaylee Keller

Album NameRubies

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Country Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Nowhere America; 2.  Let Your Love; 3.  Get Back Up; 4.  You’re my Broken Compass; 5.  Taking out the Trash; 6.  What I Believe

Publicist:  Nashville Publicity Group

Review:  Kaylee Keller is a true home-grown musician, who has stayed true to her roots despite her success.  With a sound similar to that other small-town girl Carrie Underwood, Keller could be a huge star on country radio.  She is also trying her hand at acting, and has the potential to be a double success.  Her first song, “Nowhere America,” belongs on radio now, as does “You’re my Broken Compass,” and the rest of her songs deserve further industry attention.  Her music is lighthearted, uplifting and just plain fun.  Check out the fiddle work on “Let Your Love” and the ukulele on “Get Back Up” (which was recorded live).  She closes out her EP with the stunning ballad “What I Believe,” which could be an amazing theme song for a non-profit.  This EP is awesome from start to finish, but our favorite tracks are “Nowhere America” and “You’re my Broken Compass.”

Recommendation:  Kaylee Keller is the voice of the future for country pop.  Jump onboard the train and Get her EP today!

Get it or forget it – The Paranoid Style, Ben Lorentzen, Hang Tight, ClueBagger, John McLaughlin

We hope you had a wonderful Christmas.  We relaxed all day and watched the snow fall.  Now it’s time to get back into the review process.  Here are another five reviews for your perusal.

Artist Name:   The Paranoid Style

Album Name:   Underworld U.S.A.

Label:   Bar/None

Genre:   Garage Punk/Indie Rock

Track Listing:   1.  Underworld USA; 2.  Dominoes in Drag; 3.  Hawk Vs. Prez; 4.  I Believe you Believe you can Fly; 5.  Dedicated Glare; 6.  Revision of Love

Publicist:   The Syndicate

Review:  This is not your typical punk, more like indie rock with a rockabilly edge.  We love the lead vocals, and the rocking accompaniment fits the lyrical content and the vibe of the music.  The songs are short and sweet and lots of fun.  This is definitely a band we can get behind and fully support – we can only imagine how much fun they must be in concert.  The punk edge does come out on “I Believe You Believe You Can Fly” and “Revision of Love,” but the former still has that rockabilly vibe.  We love every song.  We just wish there were more songs on this amazing EP.  Hopefully they will grace us with a longer album next time.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one.

Artist NameBen Lorentzen

Album NamePains & Pleasures of Intimacy

Label:  Nordic Records

Genre:  Alternative Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Crows on the Wire; 2.  I Miss You; 3.  I Know how to Protest War (but now to Make Peace); 4.  Victor Hugo Daza; 5.  Tie This Alone Away; 6.  Dead man in the Closet; 7.  Alabaster Jar; 8.  Lay Down in the Dark

Publicist:  Nordic Records/Painted Black

Review:  Wow – Ben Lorentzen knows how to ROCK.  With vocals akin to Bob Dylan, and a musical style that screams PROG ROCK, his well crafted lyrics and melody rise and swell like a rock opera.  His words are timely, like they were snatched from the headlines.  This is the kind of rock music you turn up loud in your headphones and just escape into the pictures and sound that Lorentzen creates.  This is what you want to hear on album rock stations.  We love this one from start to finish, and can’t wait for more.  Really love the strings on the final two tracks – so classy!

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one – it truly rocks!

Artist NameHang Tight

Album NameGrind

Label:  Standby Records

Genre:  Punk/Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  The Rents; 2.  Forget About It; 3.  Pretty in True Blue; 4.  Digital Age; 5.  Be Mine

Publicist:  Earshot Media

Review:  Wow – two awesome punk bands today.  Hang Tight has a harder edge than The Paranoid Style, but they are both amazing.  This is just plain fun, but with only five songs, it’s much too short for our taste!  Seriously, we can’t wait to hear more, as this EP was a nice appetizer of the great things we are sure are to come.  We love every song, especially “Digital Age.”

Recommendation:  You can’t go wrong with this one – Get it now.

Artist Name:    ClueBagger

Album NameRetroMod

Label:  GuardBird Records

Genre:  AAA/Singer-songwriter

Track Listing:  1.  The Power of a Dream; 2.  Always; 3.  No Hoper; 4.  Key West (The Last Resort); 5.  Say Goodbye to London; 6.  Temptation of Eve; 7.  Longing; 8.  Head Over Heels; 9.  Love not War; 10.  Prisoner of the American Dream; 11.  Too Hot to Handle; 12.  Girl in Trouble

Publicist:  Powderfinger Promotions

Review:  Scott Key aka ClueBagger has a very unique sound, reminiscent of a nasally Jimmy Buffett, with an island vibe.  It is a soundtrack for a good time, and would make a good background for a summer outdoor party, or to take your mind off the cold winter months.  He incorporates some interesting musical sounds into songs that just plain make you smile.  It is the kind of sound that is perfect for college radio more than AAA, but stranger things have happened on AAA.  “No Hoper” does have a 60’s kind of groove, which might be perfect if you’re in an Austin Powers mood.  Our favorite tracks are “Key West (The Last Resort),” “Say Goodbye to London,” “Temptation of Eve,” “Head Over Heels,” Too Hot to Handle” and “Girl in Trouble.”

Recommendation:  This one is worth a chance.

Artist NameJohn McLaughlin

Album Name Live @ Ronnie Scott’s

Label:  Abstract Logix/Mediastarz

Genre:  Jazz

Track Listing:  1.  Meeting of the Spirits; 2.  Miles Beyond; 3.  Gaza City; 4.  Here Comes the Jiis; 5.  New Blues Old Bruise; 6.  El Hombre que Sabia; 7.  Sanctuary; 8.  Vital Transformation; 9.  Echoes of Then

Publicist:  MAD Ink PR

Review:  This amazing live set combines the wizardry of John McLaughlin with his band, the 4th Dimension, and totally reminds us of why we love live music.  CDs are great, but nothing beats those same songs in a concert atmosphere.  Back in the day when we were active in the San Diego jazz scene, this is the type of music we loved.  It is the perfect opportunity for audiophiles to discover the joy of live music, and to see why jazz continues to be one of the most popular genres of music.  This album also shows off the growth and longevity of McLaughlin and his music.  We would seriously have loved to be a part of the audience at the taping.  This album is the gold standard for live albums.  This one truly is a “Meeting of the Spirits.”

Recommendation:  This one is a must-have.  Get it today!

Get it or forget it – Whitney Lusk, Zoey Clarke, Xs and ARROWs, Dopapod, POLLENS

*Started writing this last night but didn’t finish it, so it’s now Christmas Eve *

It’s the Eve of the Eve and we’re still at work reviewing the myriad of new releases we have received.  We have another five for you today, which you can check out on your holiday downtime.  Enjoy these delicacies.

Artist NameWhitney Lusk

Album NameThis is Who I Am

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Country/Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Still the One You Want (pop); 2.  I’m Better Off; 3.  Your Strong; 4.  Won’t Run Away; 5.  Lack of Love; 6.  Heaven’s got a Good One; 7.  Where we Got it (ft. Kylee & Andrew Lusk); 8.  Who I Am; 9.  Still the one you Want (country)

Publicist:  None

Review:  We first heard Whitney Lusk at the Durango Songwriters Expo in Denver this past October, and were impressed by this young woman’s songwriting chops.  She is definitely one of the voices of the future, and her songs are very radio friendly, both country and pop.  She deserves some serious industry consideration, and we believe this album is the perfect vehicle to garner that attention.  She reminds us of a younger Jessica Andrews, and even Taylor Swift, when they first broke into country radio.  Her country instrumentation is perfect for her sweet, airy voice and her storytelling songs perfectly fit that genre.  There is not a weak song on this album.  Kudos to Joel Pack for his production and to Stephan Hawkes for his mastering of this gem, one of the best debut albums we have reviewed this year.

Recommendation:  A true no-brainer, you simply MUST Get this one!

Artist NameZoey Clarke

Album Name Creative Juices

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  EDM/R&B

Track Listing:  1.  Wonder Woman; 2.  Bernadine; 3.  Rewind; 4.  Shots Fired; 5.  Sometime; 6.  Gone; 7.  That Part

Publicist:  First Born Music and Entertainment

Review:  We love that this EP is introduced/hosted by DJ Scream, and could easily hear these songs at our local club.  This music sets your body to rocking and begs you to get out on the dance floor and boogie.  The first track is pure dance and then an awesome R&B vibe comes out of the second and third tracks.  Just watch out for the explicit language on “Bernardine.”  The EDM vibe returns on “Shots Fired” and “Sometime” before she closes out the last two tracks back in the R&B camp.  Every one of these songs is truly worthy of industry attention.  We look forward to hearing more from this fresh new voice.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one – you’ll be dancing in no time.

Artist NameXs and ARROWs

Album NameFrom Here

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Missing; 2.  Fire From Gold; 3.  Par Ici; 4.  Questions (ft. Glen Hansard)

Publicist:  None

Review:  This amazing trio of Los Angeles ladies began their career as a quartet under the band name EXIT, and even opened for U2 at the Staples Center for a performance of “Out of Control.”  This version has them more subdued but no less intoxicating, with their steady rhythm, soaring vocals and thoughtful lyrics.  We really love the guest vocals of Glen Hansard on “Questions.”  The industry needs to wake up and see what kind of homegrown talent exists in their own city.  This band deserves their turn on the world’s stage, and we truly believe they will achieve that.  Our only complaint is that this 4-song is just too short, and we can’t wait to hear more.

Recommendation:  Be the first to jump on this bandwagon before their train leaves the station.  Get their debut EP now.

Artist NameDōpapod

Album Name:  MEGAGEM

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Prog Rock/Dance

Track Listing:  1.  Plaese Haalp; 2.  Piazole; 3.  Zonk; 4.  Mucho; 5.  Confabulation; 6.  Turn by Turn; 7.  Buster Brown; 8.  Starfish

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  OMG – we were not prepared for the awesomeness that is Dōpapod!  Where have they been hiding?  MEGAGEM is their fifth studio album, and we are in love with it.  It’s as if the Beatles joined up with Led Zeppelin, and we can’t stop listening.  Based on what we hear on this album, this band deserves their upcoming sabbatical, and they have left a legacy to tide us over until the return in 2019.  We never would have believed that a prog rock band could create dance instrumental music, but check out “Piazole” and “Zonk” to see what we mean.  The band’s instrumental flexibility reminds us of Dick Dale.  From surprise we moved to utter amazement on the incredible Spanish track “Mucho,” which has some of the meanest keys we’ve heard since our last Dave Yaden show.   They return to the prog rock vibe for the rest of the album, and especially shine on “Confabulation” and “Buster Brown,” which has an almost jazzy feel.  Truth be told, every track is a winner.

Recommendation:  Get up and Get it. NOW!

Artist NamePOLLENS

Album Name Mister Manufacture

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Avant-pop/experimental indie rock

Track Listing:  1.  Close; 2.  Dinosaurs; 3.  J-Train; 4.  Looks; 5.  Not Talking; 6.  Words

Publicist:  Behind the Curtains Media

Review:  Pollens is not your “band next door.”  They play experimental music utilizing percussion, shouting and ambient noise, and they have a lot to say.  This unusual duo consists of two unnamed musicians who are truly modern-day beatniks, reciting poetry with a myriad of musical sounds underscoring their lyrics.  Some of the songs are nonsensical while others actually seem to be trying to espouse their view of modern day life.  The music is by no means commercial, but we’re sure there are a few people who would enjoy their truly unique sound.  “Looks” and “Words” are the best tracks.

Recommendation:  Unless you are truly eclectic in your musical tastes, or like the experimental vibe, it might be best to Forget this one.

Get it or forget it – Chara Sands, Tracy Bonham, Happy Abandon, Alastair Greene, Historian

The snow continues to fall in Missoula, and we’re expecting 3-4 inches today, which will ensure our “White Christmas” status for this year.  Looking forward to catching Keaton Simons’ “Eve of the Eve” show tomorrow night on StageIt for the fifth year in a row.  Hope you all have a very merry Christmas.  Enjoy these five reviews and check out the artists.

Artist NameChara Sands

Album NamePart One

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Alternative/Indie Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Mourning Light; 2.  Andy’s Diner; 3.  Parfum; 4.  Bhappy Bjoyous; 5.  Tight, That’s What U Say; 6.  All Eyes on U; 7.  H.L.H.I.B.O.; 8.  Somewhere I Rave

Publicist:  Stephanie Gotch

Review:  Chara Sands has a sound that is impossible to pigeonhole.  They combine elements of alternative, pop, soul, R&B and house to create their own unique sound.  Unfortunately, the tunes are not radio friendly, but might find a home on college radio or as part of the latest DJ mix.  There is obvious creativeness involved in the songs.  However, from a commercial standpoint, there is not much demand for this type of music.

Recommendation:  Unless you like to experiment with your music, this one is probably not for  you.

Artist Name:   Tracy Bonham

Album Name:   Modern Burdens

Label:  Schoolkids Records

Genre:  Alternative Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Mother Mother; 2.  Navy Bean; 3.  Tell it to the Sky (ft. Nicole Atkins); 4.  Kisses (ft. Rachel Yamagata); 5.  Brain Crack (ft. Kathryn Calder); 6.  The One; 7.  One Hit Wonder; 8.  Sharks Can’t Sleep (ft. Tanya Donelly); 9.  Bulldog; 10.  Every Breath (ft. Kay Hanley); 11.  30 Seconds (ft. Angie Hart); 12.  The Real (ft. Sadie Dupuis); 13.  Free

Publicist:  Schoolkids Records

Review:  With a voice that’s a cross between Janis Joplin and Amy Winehouse, Tracy Bonham packs a powerful punch with this latest batch of tunes, which also feature some of the best of her peers on seven of the tracks.  These songs have a decidedly dark feel, which could make them great placements for television and film, especially “Brain Crack,” which features Kathryn Calder, and “Every Breath,” which features Kay Hanley.  While her sound is definitely not mainstream, it should appeal to a multitude of today’s young people.  The closing track, “Free,” is a rousing rock song that is quite radio friendly.  It is the perfect way to end this amazing album.

Recommendation:  This one is worth the risk.  We believe she has the chops to continue to make interesting tunes, so grab a copy.

Artist Name Happy Abandon

Album NameFacepaint

Label:  Schoolkids Records

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Ivory Bound; 2.  Beneath our Feet; 3.  Love Like Language; 4.  Take Me; 5.  Severed Seams; 6.  Choice; 7.  If I Stare; 8.  Stop Taking Care of Me; 9.  Heavy Lines; 10.  Cursed or Worse

Publicist:  Schoolkids Records

Review:  What a refreshing sound.  We are extremely impressed with the lads from Happy Abandon.  They musicianship is first rate, their harmonies are heavenly, and their songs are smooth, easy-going and full of life.  These guys are one of the best discoveries we have had in quite a while, and we can hardly wait to see what comes next.  The entire album is enjoyable, but we truly liked “Beneath our Feet,” “Love Like Language,” “Take Me,” “Severed Seams,” and “Stop Taking Care of Me.”

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one.

Artist NameAlastair Greene

Album NameDream Train

Label:  Rip Cat Records

Genre:  Blues

Track Listing:  1.  Dream Train; 2.  Big Bad Wolf; 3.  Nome Zayne; 4.  Another Lie; 5.  Song for Rufus; 6.  Im the Taker; 7.  Daredevil; 8.  Grateful Swagger; 9.  Rain Stomp; 10.  Demons Down; 11.  Iowa; 12.  Down to Memphis; 13.  Lucky 13

Publicist:  Frank Roszak Promotions

Review:  If Jimi Hendrix played blues guitar with the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, the result would be Alastair Greene.  His amazing rocking blues guitar riffs with southern rock accompaniment are the perfect marriage of those three genres.  From the first note of the title track, the listener is put on notice that this is not your typical blues album – this is Southern Blues Rock!  The second track sounds more traditional Muddy Waters, with just that southern rock edginess thrown in for good measure.  “Another Lie” is laid back and groovy, while he shows off his finger picking skills on “Song for Rufus.”  In fact, Greene could put on a clinic on playing guitar just from the songs on this album, all of which are amazing.  Put this one on repeat and Party On!

Recommendation:  Don’t even think about it – Get this one now!

Artist NameHistorian

Album NameExpanse

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Space Rock/Psychedelica

Track Listing:  1.  Small Compromise; 2.  My Last Call; 3.  Here and Then; 4.  Atlantis; 5.  Ready to Drive; 6.  I Need a Future; 7.  The Truth; 8.  Stars; 9.  Envelope; 10.  Thrown on the Road

Publicist:  Working Brilliantly

Review:  With airy and spacious strings, and vocals that soar, the music of Historian is truly space rock in the sense that it paints a picture of the vastness of space while keeping the listener’s feet on the ground with solid lyrical content that keeps them engaged and connected to the music.  This is an album to be experienced – put it on, sit back with a nice glass of wine, and just bask in the music.  The music will relax you and help you chill – just don’t listen while driving!  Best tracks include “Atlantis,” “Ready to Drive,” “The Truth,” “Stars,” and “Envelope.”

Recommendation:  If you’re looking for a good chill musical background, then this is your album.

Get it or forget it – R.D. Olson, Liz Kennedy, Dawson Rutledge, Russ Carrick, Bad Galaxy

Happy first day of Winter – we’re still cranking out the reviews and have five more for you today.  We continue to be amazed at the level of indie talent and the quality of releases in 2017.  Watch for our Best of 2017 series, coming soon.

Publicist:  Doug Deutsch Publicity Services

Review:  There are blues artists and there are down and dirty blues artists.  R.D. Olson definitely falls into the latter category.  His sound is pure New Orleans Delta and his voice is reminiscent of the glory days of Muddy Waters, Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino.  Everything you love about that music is present in Olson’s mix, including great harmonica, horns, keys and guitar.  Add to that the sexy lyrics and that deep bass delivery and you have the makings of a blues masterpiece.  Best cuts include “Sheila,” “Petie Reed,” the title track, “Johnnie Walker,” and “Up the Line.”

Recommendation:  This one is a must have for true blues lovers.  Go out and Get it.

Artist NameLiz Kennedy

Album NameHike up Your Socks

Label:  Clean White Shirt Music

Manager:  Open All Nite Entertainment

Review:  The definition of Americana music has changed so much since it was created because of artists like Liz Kennedy, who continue to push its boundaries to incorporate new sounds that make Americana one of the fastest growing genres of music.  A number of musicians played on the album, including legendary blues guitarist Taj Mahal, who brought his voice and banjo to “Everyone Knows how it Goes,” as well as providing amazing harmonica on “Love Gave me Away.”  Kudos to Joel Jaffe, whose production work helped shape the incredible sound of the overall album.

Recommendation:  Add this one to your Americana collection – it’s a worthy addition!

Artist NameDawson Rutledge

Album Name Monsters

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Singer-songwriter

Track Listing:  1.  Thief of a Lover; 2.  Holding my Own; 3.  Aid Me; 4.  When Life Gives you Monsters; 5.  Whispering Winds; 6.  Same old News; 7.  Yours, Truly; 8.  Heavy Heart; 9.  Coffee Shop

Publicist:  Last Tango Productions

Review:  Dawson Rutledge may be only 20 years old, but his music has a depth and maturity far beyond his years.  His voice is unique and instantly identifiable, and his songwriter chops are some of the finest we have reviewed this year.  The guitar picking is second to none, and the harmonies are absolutely beautiful.  Just a casual listen to the first track, “Thief of a Lover,” and you know that you are in the presence of musical greatness.  This album is worthy of serious industry interest, and his songs belong on the radio.  He reminds us of a young Jim Croce, and we believe that his songs will become just as popular.  Best tracks include “Holding my Own,””When Life Gives you Monsters,” “Whispering Winds,” “Yours, Truly,” and “Coffee Shop.”

Recommendation:  This one is a no-brainer – Get it today!

Artist Name Russ Carrick

Album NameTense Present

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Pop/Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Tense Present; 2.  The Chair Recognizes; 3.  Suns Gotta Shine; 4.  Holding my Fire; 5.  Dance Around the Rubble; 6.  Ella’s October Moon; 7.  Dinner with the Sorcerer; 8.  Must be Alright

Publicist:  Behind the Curtains Media

Review:  With a voice similar to that of the lead singer of the Crash Test Dummies, Russ Carrick crashes into your world with some startlingly good rock and roll.  The first track is the title track, and it sets the mood for the rest of the album.  The music is radio friendly and should be on the playlists of college radio nationwide.  Best tracks include the title track, “Suns Gotta Shine,” “Dance Around the Rubble,” “Ella’s October Moon,” and “Must be Alright.”

Recommendation:  Get this one if you love to rock.

Artist NameBad Galaxy

Album NameBad Galaxy

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  8 Billion Lights; 2.  All of the Flats; 3.  Always in a Minor Key; 4.  Bad Thoughts; 5.  DAMNAGE; 6.  Hallways; 7.  Howling Jaws; 8.  Prosperous Sun; 9.  Slow Motion; 10.  Strangers on the Avenue; 11.  Too Many Angels; 12.  Yes Queen

Publicist:  Behind the Curtains Media

Review:  By day he’s mild-mannered Alexis Pastuhov, working hard at Behind the Curtains Media, but after hours, he transforms into Bad Galaxy, sharing his avant-garde style of indie rock with new listeners everywhere.  His music shows great promise of a long career, and already has two thumbs up from different generations in this household.   Although he has previously released two full length albums and two EPs under his own name, this is his first attempt to show his new style under the moniker Bad Galaxy.  We think his music is going in the right direction, and look forward to more from this intriguing young artist.  Best cuts include “All of the Flats,” “Bad Thoughts,”  “DAMNAGE,” “Howling Jaws,” “Prosperous Sun,” and “Strangers on the Avenue.”

Recommendation:  Definitely give this one a spin.  It is well worth the risk of the unknown.

Get it or forget it – Robbery Inc., FreeWorld, TYA, Louise Lemon, Seasonal Beast

It’s the last day of fall, with winter already pounding at our door.  Christmas is right around the corner, and there is still so much music to review.  Here are another five to give you something to think about.  Enjoy.

Artist NameRobbery Inc.

Album NameHoneybee (7″ vinyl)

Label:  Apostoles Records

Genre:  Alternative Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Honeybee; 2.  Skin

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  Robbery Inc. is a trio composed of Robb Torres, former guitarist of TRAPT, as well as bassist and keyboardist Johan Wei-Haas and drummer Matt Cambros.  Their sound is alternative rock, with a healthy dose of great keyboards and guitar, as well as finely crafted lyrical content to create music that is memorable and radio friendly.  This two-song 7″ vinyl is jam packed with incredibleness.  “Honeybee” is a formidable tune that could easily see placement in television and film, and should be on radio stations worldwide.  “Skin” has a sound reminiscent of Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Led Zeppelin, and is surely an instant classic.  We only wish there were more than two songs here, but it has definitely piqued our interest for whatever comes next.

Recommendation:  This one is a definite instant classic.  Get it now.

Artist Name FreeWorld

Album Name:    What It Is

Label:  SwirlDisc

Genre:  Blues

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  We love the blues, and FreeWorld is one of the best out there.  From their home in Memphis, they are spreading their music to the world.  They are also celebrating their 30th anniversary as a band, and we truly believe they will have many more years to come.  What It Is, their seventh studio release, was mixed by the incomparable Dave Aron and master by Grammy winning engineer Brad Blackwood.  From the first notes of “Deeper by the Minute,” it becomes immediately evident that this band knows their stuff, and they have come to share their mastery of the blues.  This one is great from start to finish, and features some amazing instrumental tracks as well.

Recommendation:  This one is a no-brainer – you simply MUST Get this one and put it on repeat.

Artist NameTYA

Album NameNo Money, More Love

Label:  A&R Records

Genre:  Alternative

Track Listing:  1.  Midnight Drive-Through; 2.  Space Man; 3.  Hustle; 4.  Boston Shelves; 5.  Feel it Happen

Publicist:  The A&R Department

Review:  We brought you their single “Hustle” in our Monday Mashup on October 23, and are now so pleased to be able to review their entire EP.  Once again, Australia has given us another reason to love music from down under.  TYA has a unique groove that should appeal to lovers of a multitude of genres, like pop, alternative, dance, and the like.  Their EP packs five incredible tunes into a sweet package that is great from start to finish, and we love everyone of them, especially “Hustle.”   We expect only the best in the future from TYA.

Recommendation:  Get onboard before the train leaves the station.  Get their EP now.

Artist NameLouise Lemón

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  R&B/Soul

Track Listing:  1.  Malex; 2.  Malex ‘Tailor Hill acoustic session’; 3.  178

Publicist:  Mystic Sons

Review:  R&B has a fresh new voice in Swedish songstress Louise Lemón.  Her latest EP contains the powerful song “Malex,” which is radio friendly and deserving of serious consideration for placement in television and film.  It is memorable and sure to satisfy even the elitist R&B music lover.  Both versions of the song are noteworthy, as is “178.”  We are once again impressed with the musical talent coming out of Sweden, and can hardly wait to see what she does next.

Recommendation:  Get this one – you won’t be sorry.

Artist NameSeasonal Beast

Album NameMuscle Memory

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Pop/Alternative

Track Listing:  1.  I Can Make You Disappear; 2.  Making Shapes; 3.  Dry Bones (ft. Sasha Daniel); 4.  This is Where; 5.  Take me Back; 6.  Another Day; 7.  Heading to a Wall; 8.  Ungovernable; 9.  Don’t Disappear; 10.  Playing in the Dark; 11.  No One Can Open the Door (ft. Julian Cassia) (Bonus Track)

Publicist:  Effective Immediately PR

Review:  Upon first listen, this band reminds us of Mandy Perkins and Of Verona.  We simply adore the lead vocals of Yuli Beeri, who truly brings the musical vision of keyboardist/lyricist Yuval Semo to life.  This album is so soothing and melodic that it can form the perfect musical background for their listeners’ day to day life.  We would love to see them live in concert, as we can only imagine being in the same room with their immeasurable talent.  Wake up America – this is the type of music we need on the radio and in television and film.  Add us to the list of people who are in love with their music.  This one is going on repeat!

Recommendation:  Don’t delay – Get this one TODAY and put it on repeat!!!!
