Monday Mashup 2019: vol. 4

Happy Monday.  We’ve reached our final Monday Mashup for January, and we’ve got some special treats for you today, including premieres of new singles from Lindsey Compton and Illicit Ghost.  Let’s get this week off to a great start.

INDIE ARTISTS REIGN AT THE NAMM SHOW

Congrats to all the indie artists who performed during The NAMM Show last week.  Thanks for keeping us in the loop with your performances, your photos and your memories.  We loved living vicariously through your social media posts.

LINDSEY COMPTON DEBUTS NEW SINGLE

Budding superstar Lindsey Compton is dropping her new single, “Starstruck” today, and we have been chosen to premiere it here.  For those who don’t know, Compton is fast becoming a force of nature.  She is standing up for the rights of women and taking feminism to a whole new level.  She believes women should express anything they choose – and she does it with a ‘do everything for the art’ attitude that expresses all that she is:  sassy and witty, flirty and fun, inclusive and edgy, funky and above all else, fearless.

Starstruck

Click on the link above to check out the song.  With “Starstruck,” Compton manages to achieve pop bliss by bringing the sounds of Hole, Ariana Grande, and Lykke Li together.  The song starts off dark enough to make us believe she might be a grunge-era Queen, but by the time the chorus is repeating out it has become crystal clear that Compton is the new Princess of Pop.

ILLICIT GHOST DROPS FIRST SINGLE OF 2019

Brooklyn-based artist/producer/violinist Illicit Ghost also drops her latest single, “Parties by Myself,” today, a head-bobbing anti-social anthem, but beware, this one is quite explicit.  She combines a remarkably raw vocal performance, dirty bass, hip hop machine drums and ominous synths with her signature aggressive violin sound.  In her own words, “‘Parties by Myself’ is simply about not trying to fit in, not taking shit from anyone and doing what makes you happy,” says Illicit Ghost.  “I think the new year is perfect timing for this message.”  We couldn’t agree more.

The inspiration for the song came from an unlikely place. “I used to listen to Third Eye Blind’s ‘Semi-Charmed Life’ constantly when I was 12” explains Illicit Ghost.  “I had a Third Eye Blind cassette that I was not allowed to listen to because it was about sex and drugs.  But I loved that song so much that I got a small tape player and listened underneath my covers each night.  At the time I didn’t understand what it was about at all, but I liked the feeling I got from it.  I felt free. I wanted to make something that captured the same feeling.”  We think she accomplished her goal.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week is from Fort Frances, who we introduced to you back in December 2016 when we reviewed their album Alio.  Since then, they have been up to great things and their latest single is another masterpiece.  Check out “Double Take.”

Our next single comes from Montreal’s L.A. Foster, and is a beautiful and intimate song called “Honestly.”  We think it will soon become your own personal anthem.

Our third single is an upbeat fun tune called “Lonely Loving Me,” and comes to us via the UK’s Hockeysmith.  This one has the R&B and electronic pop sound to get your week off to a great start.

Next is the debut single from Denver based R&B band Waxcat.  Here is “Oceans.”

Our final single this week comes from the forthcoming album by Damon Mitchell, which will drop on March 2.  Here is the title track, and we think it is definitely worthy of a listen.  Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first video this week is from Blue Élan Records artist The Vegabonds, who we reviewed January 18 upon their release of V.  This is one of the best cuts on the album, and we are proud to share “Best I Can” with you.

Our next video comes from recent LA Music Critic Awards winner Jordan Siwek.  It is a heart-wrenching and touching video shot in New York City that perfectly captures the essence of his song “Lover and a Giver.”  Break out the tissues.

Video number three is the latest from Valerio Lysander, who we reviewed last August.  “Little People” is inspired by the 1st movement of Mozart’s Sonata in F major, K. 332, and should raise your cultural awareness for the week.  Enjoy the beauty of this video.

Our next video is about coming to terms with who you are, and features the soulful voice of Aaron Sibley.  Check out this powerful video for his song, “Falling Through.”

We close out this week with the amazing sound of We Three, who we reviewed last week.  They have been on a tear ever since they competed on America’s Got Talent, and this video shows why.  Check out their fans lip-syncing the band’s song “Your Lifeline.”

Get it or forget it: Year of Suns, Fort Frances, The Show Ponies

Happy Tuesday.  Time now for the 19th installment of Get it or Forget It.  Today we’re featuring music from a pair of clients of the uber amazing indie PR firm Red Boot PR, as well as a long awaited review of a truly outstanding artist from In Music we Trust.  Grab a cup of coffee and join us as we discuss these three new releases.

Artist NameYear of Suns

Album NameSounds of Silence

Label:  Milk + Gum

Genre:  Indie Rock/Singer-Songwriter

Track Listing:  1.  Rode the Darkness Home; 2.  Hard to Forget; 3.  Once it Comes; 4.  Plain Sight; 5.  Autumn Light

Publicist:  Red Boot PR

Review:  Chris Matthews aka Year of Suns has had an interesting year.  According to his publicist, Matthews moved from one unstable living scenario to another, this relative died, that relative died, then another, and another, in what would become a tragic comedy of biblical proportions . . . except it wasn’t ever funny.  To top it all off, he also had an intimate relationship fall into dissolution, and was hit by a car in the San Fernando Valley.  Despite all of this, he has created a masterpiece of simplicity with an honesty and rawness that cuts through the crap to deliver powerfully inspiring music.  All five tracks deliver a message of hope, enthroned on a simple musical backdrop that focuses the listener on the lyrics.  It is in our opinion one of the premier indie releases of 2016.  We also discovered this gem from earlier in the year.  Check it out and we think you’ll agree that this artist is the real deal, whether simple and intimate as on the EP, or with a full soundtrack as below.

Recommendation:  Don’t stop, don’t think, just Get It!

Artist Name: Fort Frances

Album NameAlio

Label:  Roadblock Records

Genre:  Indie Pop/Rock

Track Listing: 1.  You got the Wrong Man; 2.  Take the Wheel; 3.  Days get Heavy; 4.  Best of Luck; 5.  Sigh of Relief; 6.  Anonymous; 7.  Everything is Starting to Make Sense; 8.  Building a Wall; 9.  These are the Mountains Moving; 10.  The Light Years; 11.  This Year is Yours

Publicist:  In Music we Trust

Review:  On first listen, you might confuse Fort Frances with Maroon 5, as they share a great lead vocalist and an ‘in your face’ musical style that is instantly memorable.  But on closer examination, Fort Frances separates itself in a way that only indie bands can.  They recently completed a very successful tour in support of their new album, Alio.  Listening to this amazing disc confirms the reason why – this band simply rocks!  Every song is radio ready, and keeps the listener occupied with its dynamics and great lyrics.  We could easily put this album on repeat and never get tired of listening to potential hit song after potential hit song.  Best tracks include “Take the Wheel,” “Days get Heavy,” “Best of Luck,” “Anonymous,” “Building a Wall” and “These are the Mountains Moving.”  So glad we were able to introduce you to this band with an exclusive preview of their video for “Going to California” back in October.  These guys are gonna be around for a long time to come!

Recommendation:  Another no-brainer.  If you love quality rock with great musical backdrop to brilliant lyrics and a lead singer that is fast becoming one of the premier voices in indie music, then get off your butt and Get It.

Artist NameThe Show Ponies

Album NameHow it all Goes Down

Label:  FreeMan Records

Genre:  Folk/Americana

Track Listing:  1.  The Time it Takes; 2.  This World is not my Home; 3.  Kalamazoo; 4.  Someone to Stay; 5.  Shoulda Showed Him; 6.  Folks Back Home; 7.  Only Lie; 8.  Something Good; 9.  Sweetly; 10.  If you Could Break That Chain; 11.  Don’t Call on Me; 12.  Bravery be Written; 13.  How it all Goes Down

Publicist:  Red Boot PR

Review:  Laura Goldfarb of Red Boot PR has introduced this writer to a few amazing artists over the years, but none of them compare to this amazing band.  The Show Ponies combine the fun of Mumford & Sons with the lyrical brilliance of Bruce Springsteen to create musical genius that is destined to propel this band to the head of the pack and make them a household name.  Their video for “The Time it Takes,” which was formed from tour footage, is simply amazing.  The second track, “This World is not my Home,” rocks as only a true gospel bluegrass song can.  It is impossible to pick the best tracks, as every song delivers in its own way.  The multiple lead singers (Andi Carder and Clayton Chaney) make every song like a Christmas present that you can’t wait to open.  One thing that truly stands out is the amazing fiddle work of Phil Green, as well as the banjo of Carder.  Add to that the perfect percussive foundation of Kevin Brown on drums and Chaney on bass, coupled with the guitar and piano of Jason Hawk Harris and it is easy to see why we are so in love with this band.  If they ever come within 500 miles of your home, you owe it to yourself to get out and see them perform.

Recommendation:  This album is not scheduled to be released until January 20 2017, but we highly suggest you pre-order it NOW so you don’t miss out.  Here are the links:  iTunes or Google Play.

Fort Frances prepares for tour with release of new video (exclusive)

You may not have heard of Fort Frances, but you should definitely check them out.  In preparation for the release of their new album Alio, they have recorded a music video for the classic Led Zeppelin song, “Going to California.”  Indie Voice Blog is proud to exclusively release this video today to get you ready to catch these guys in concert.

The song is very apropos, considering the band’s current tour schedule, which kicks off next Saturday night, October 22, with a secret show in Seattle, Washington.  Here are the dates for the tour (click on the links for tickets and additional details):

Tour dates:
10/22/16Seattle Secret Show – Seattle, WA
10/24/16White Eagle – Portland, OR
10/25/16Hotel Utah – San Francisco, CA
10/28/16Hotel Cafe *Second Stage* – Los Angeles, CA
10/29/16Standing Sun Wines – Buellton, CA
Based in Chicago, these indie rockers have found success in a most unlikely place – Lithuania.  Even while the band was doing the DIY battle in the United States, they were becoming a household name in this former member of the USSR, where their music video cover of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s song, “Summertime,” released in 2012, collected more than one million views.

“We started to get all these messages from fans in Eastern Europe about how much they loved the song,” lead singer David McMillin says. “We really didn’t think that we were catching on somewhere halfway around the world.”
In 2015, they were offered a slot at Loftas Fest, the biggest summer music festival in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, where they played along with Mercury Prize-winning Young Fathers and XL/Terrible Records rapper Le1f.   “Here we were, this unknown band with our name alongside some of these huge artists from around the world,” bassist Jeff Piper says. “I didn’t even believe we were going until we were on the plane.”
Fort Frances arrived in Lithuania to find their name plastered on billboards and street signs.  They even appeared on Good Morning Lithuania.  As if that wasn’t enough, the band played the sold out opening night headlining spot at the Festival.
“Our week in Lithuania was one of the most rewarding times of my life,” McMillin says.  “You start playing music in a garage without a clue as to where it can take you.  I never would have expected the road could lead us to a stage in the former Eastern Bloc.”
Don’t miss your chance to catch this amazing band on their west coast tour.  We’ll be back next week with a review of their new album.  In the meantime, check out their website and Facebook pages, follow them on Twitter and Instagram, and subscribe to their YouTube channel.
Thanks to Alex Steininger of In Music we Trust PR for the background material, and for turning us on to this fascinating indie band.
