Get it or forget it: Katie Garibaldi, Bobbo Byrnes, Lauren Adams

We’re back with another edition of Get it or Forget It.  Due to my work schedule, I will not be able to publish any reviews tomorrow, so this will have to do until Sunday.  But worry not, we have three amazing artists for you today who will definitely keep you company until our next review.

katie-garibaldi

Artist NameKatie Garibaldi

Album NameRooted Clarity

Label:  None

Genre:  Singer Songwriter Acoustic Americana

Track Listing:  1.  Delightful; 2.  I Am; 3.  In my Wildest Dreams; 4.  On my Own; 5.  Bird in a Cage

Publicist:  None

Review:  Katie Garibaldi has been making quite a name for herself within the Americana community, where there seems to be little emphasis on whether or not an artist is on a label.  Lovers of Americana music seem to place a value on the music and not the source in determining where they give their support.  Maybe the rest of the music industry could learn something from this practice.  At any rate, Garibaldi has a voice and style of music that throws back to a time when music was purer and simpler, in the vein of Patsy Cline, Barbara Mandrell and Lynn Anderson.  Take for example the first track, “Delightful,” which has been nominated for a Hollywood Music in Media award, and has been released as a music video.

The rest of the EP is just as wonderful.  Garibaldi has a special ability to wow us with the simplicity of good music and her amazing voice.  The best track in our humble opinion is “On my Own.”

Recommendation:  If you love soaring vocals and great music that features mandolin, fiddle, and strings, then this is definitely the EP for you.  Indie Voice Blog is proud to give Rooted Clarity a rating of Get It.

bobbo

Artist NameBobbo Byrnes

Album NameMotel Americana

Label:  Songs & Whispers

Genre:  Singer Songwriter Acoustic Americana

Track Listing:  1.  Hold Me; 2.  To her Door; 3.  APB; 4.  Hate This Town; 5.  I may Never Know; 6.  Heading South; 7.  Millsboro; 8.  Solitaire; 9.  No Expectations; 10.  Nothing Needs to be Said; 11.  1, 2, 3; 12.  Long way to Nashville

Publicist:  None

Review:  Anyone who has spent any time in Southern California has probably been exposed to the music of Bobbo Byrnes, one half of The Fallen Stars, a band praised as one of the next generation of Americana bands.   Even though this is a solo album, Byrnes continues to rely on his wife Tracy’s mad bass skills and powerful backing vocals, as well as the skills of bandmate Ben Riddle of Byrnes’ other band, Riddle and the Stars.  In fact, many of the songs contained on this album have been performed at some time by one or both of those bands.   But it is the shear genius of Byrnes, who by the way contributes vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, bass, mandolin, pedal steel, dobro, tricone, accordion, mandoguitar, tenor guitar, piano, B3 organ, dumpster, harmonica, drums and monotron to the mix, that is demonstrated in 12 amazing songs, nine of which Byrnes either wrote or co-wrote.  Strongest tracks include “Hold Me,” “APB,” “Hate This Town,” “I may Never Know,” “No Expectation,” and “1, 2, 3.”

Recommendation:  Byrnes is becoming one of the hardest working musicians in the Americana community, and his first solo album is further proof of his abilities.  Motel Americana is a definite Get It if you love great music.

lauren-adams

Artist NameLauren Adams

Album NameSomewhere Else

Label:  None

Genre:  Singer Songwriter Acoustic Americana

Track Listing:  1.  It Takes What it Takes; 2.  Somewhere Else; 3.  Henry (from Saginaw, MI); 4.  Heavy, Heavy Heart; 5.  Miss You; 6.  The Shoe Fits; 7.  Oh Marie; 8.  Between me and You; 9.  We try Harder; 10.  Bayview Drive; 11.  National Cheer up the Lonely Day; 12.  Seminole Wind

Publicist:  KG Music Press

Review:  Lauren Adams is one of the predominant female voices in Americana music today, as well as a very talented voice over artist.  On her latest offering she gives us more amazing tidbits that are worthy of your attention, including an amazing cover and inspiring arrangement of John Anderson’s seminal hit, “Seminole Wind.”  Adams also continues to support the Americana music community by incorporating the musical abilities of some of its best musicians on her projects, and the list of those who have contributed to this project is a who’s who of some of the best and brightest.   This is one of those albums that you can listen to from start to finish and never be bored, as the gamut of Americana music is revealed in the musical gems contained within this release.  The strongest tracks are “It Takes What it Takes,” “Miss You,” “Oh Marie,” “We try Harder,” “Bayview Drive,” and “Seminole Wind.”

Recommendation:  It is hard to believe that Adams has been performing for the past 38 years, as her music is always fresh and new.  This is by far one of her best offerings to date, and Indie Voice Blog is proud to give it a rating of “You Better Get it Now!”

Get it or Forget it: Freddy & Francine, Chi McClean, Shannon Hurley

Day two of our eight day album review challenge brings us three more reviews.  We are amazed at the quality and quantity of amazing music within the indie music community.  Sit back and enjoy these reviews as we help you determine who you should check out and who is worthy of your hard-earned entertainment dollars.

ff2

Artist NameFreddy & Francine

Album NameGung Ho

Label:  F&F Records

Genre:  Country Folk Americana

Track Listing:  1.  If you Want Me; 2.  I get the Feeling; 3.  Something’s Gotta Give; 4.  Tryin’ Hard to Love You; 5.  Duet; 6.  Father’s Daughter; 7.  Ray’s Song; 8.  The Moment; 9.  Sideman; 10.  You go to my Head; 11.  South of my Love; 12.  The World to Me

 Publicist: The Press House

Review:  Freddy & Francine have slowly built up a rabid fan base in their native Los Angeles, and packed the venue for their CD release show at the Hotel Café back in June.  Composed of Lee Ferris and Bianca Caruso, the group has already won the LA Music Critic Award for best pop band for the first half of 2016.  Just a casual listen to their latest CD gives the listener an understanding as to why this duo has become so popular.  Their sound can be considered Americana, folk, pop or country, but regardless of the genre you place it in, the result is some of the finest music coming out of Los Angeles today.  From the first track “If You Want Me” all the way through the final track “The World to Me,” Freddy & Francine demonstrate that they have what it takes to burst forth from their indie beginnings and make it in this tough music business.  Best tracks include “If you Want Me,” “I get the Feeling,” “Ray’s Song,” “The Moment,” and “South of my Love.”

Recommendation:  Freddy & Francine definitely have what it takes to be making music for a long time to come.  This album is further proof that you can expect great things from this band, and is definitely worthy of a Get It rating.

chi

Artist NameChi McClean

Album NameLet me In

Label:  None

Genre:  Singer-Songwriter Acoustic Country Rock

Track Listing:  1.  I Save You; 2.  Build me Up; 3.  Life got in the Way; 4.  Let me In; 5.  It Don’t Matter; 6.  It’s Alright; 7.  Thought I’d Never; 8.  A Thing or Three

 Publicist:  None

Review:  Chi McClean has quietly become one of the best indie musicians you have probably never heard of.  We have known McClean for quite a few years, and his latest CD is his best yet, although we feel that it only begins to touch the musical genius that he possesses.  His songs could easily make the transition to college radio and even mainstream country radio.  The first track, “I Save You,” belongs on the same playlist with Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan, Josh Kelley and Maroon 5.  There isn’t a weak song on this CD.  McClean’s brilliant writing shines forth on each track, but is especially highlighted on “I Save You,” “Life Got in the Way,” “It’s Alright,” and “Thought I’d Never.”

Recommendation:  You can mark it on your calendar that Indie Voice Blog predicts that Chi McClean will soon become a household name.  Of all the albums we have reviewed this year, this one is definitely in the top 3 and receives not only a Get It rating, but a “You must be crazy if you don’t have this CD in your library” rating.

shannon-hurley

Artist NameShannon Hurley

Album NameSwitch it On

Label:  Lenore Records

Genre:  Singer Songwriter Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Switch it On; 2.  Heartbeat on the Radio; 3.  What Will it Take; 4.  Fall From Grace; 5.  Behind the Clouds; 6.  Nightingale; 7.  I’ll Turn it On; 8.  Sweet Lovin’ Ways; 9.  Back to my Heart; 10.  Only Love

Publicist:  None

Review:  Whether playing solo or with her husband in the dynamic duo Lovers & Poets, Shannon Hurley is a force of nature.  Her dynamic vocals coupled with her incredible keys and electronica create a unique sound in the world of indie music.  Her creative genius is easily seen in this amazing collection of songs, as well as in the innovative music videos that she creates.  Check out the video for track two, “Heartbeat on the Radio,” if you need further proof.

Best tracks include “Heartbeat on the Radio,” “What Will it Take,” “Behind the Clouds,” and “Back to my Heart.”

Recommendation:  Hurley’s potential as an artist seems to be unlimited.  She gets better with each project, and this CD is one of her best yet.  We are pleased to give Switch it On an unmitigated Get It rating.

Get it or Forget it: Emily Clibourn, One From Many, Alexis Keegan

So much indie music has been crossing my desk lately.  I just realized today that I have 24 of them that need reviews, so I’m challenging myself to write reviews on them all in the next eight days.  With that goal in mind, here are the reviews of the first three.

emily-clibourn

Artist NameEmily Clibourn

Album NameBlow

Label:  None

Genre:  Singer-songwriter pop

Track Listing:  1.  Beautiful Girls; 2.  Blow; 3.  Burgundy; 4.  Fly; 5.  Fools Gold; 6.  Middle of the Night; 7.  Black Velvet; 8.  For the Love; 9.  Die to the Dream

Publicist:  None

Review:  The first thing a listener will notice about Emily Clibourn’s music is her voice, which immediately grabs your attention with its sweet and tangy sound.  The lyrics also invade your mind and set upon their mission to let you know that Clibourn is a force to be reckoned with.   This album contains nine beautiful songs about love and its many facets, and is the type of music you want to hear when you are unwinding after a long day.  It provides the perfect soundtrack when you want to forget the past and clear your mind.  Every song accomplishes this mission, and every lover of good relaxing music should definitely have this one in their musical library.  Best tracks include the title track, “Beautiful Girls, “Fools Gold,” and “For the Love.”

Recommendation:  Clibourn is a natural storyteller with a killer voice that surrounds you with the pureness of fresh fallen snow.  We are happy to give this a most definite Get It rating.

ofm

Artist NameOne From Many

Album Name:  29:11

Label:  Olea Records

Genre:  Indie Pop/Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Like a Ghost; 2.  These Three Words; 3.  Apology; 4.  Promise Forever; 5.  Afterglow

Publicist:  Ue3 Promotions

Review:  One From Many, or O.F.M., may remind you of such groups as One Republic or Imagine Dragons, but with their own distinct approach to the music.   The music is pure anthemic rock with a power ballad mentality that is great to listen to while you are living life.  The vocals soar over just the right amount of acoustical instrumentation, creating a melody that grabs your attention and makes you want to sing along at the top of your voice.  Special recognition to “Promise Forever,” which features label mate Alexis Keegan, but every song on this EP is worthy of repeated listens.

Recommendation:  Most definitely, Get It.  You’ll be glad you did.

Alexis

Artist NameAlexis Keegan

Album Name:  Endless Road

Label:  Olea Records

Genre:  R&B-tinged pop

Track Listing:  1.  Empty Heart; 2.  Nobody Compares; 3.  Last Song; 4.  There Will be Love; 5.  Everything

Publicist:  Ue3 Promotions

Review:  Alexis Keegan’s music is full of soul, and is reflected in this perfect collection, with a sound that is part Taylor Dayne, part Pink, but totally incredible.  These songs belong on the radio, with their catchy lyrics, grooving beat, and a voice that needs to be heard.  It is next to impossible to just sit and listen to these tunes which truly make the listener want to get up and dance.  Keegan is the voice of a new generation, and should be coming to a radio station near you in the very future.  This is definitely an artist to watch, and all five songs should be on your play list.

Recommendation:  Keegan has a special gift that she happily shares with every listener.  If you love music that makes you want to move, then this EP should definitely be on your Get It list.

Get it or Forget it: Debbie Hennessey, No Nets, Rae Fitzgerald

Welcome back for our third installment of the Get it or Forget it series.  This week we will feature two more artists courtesy of Noisy Ghost PR and one artist who does it all herself.  So sit back, settle in and check us out as we help you decide where to spend your hard-earned entertainment dollars.

debbie-hennessey

Artist NameDebbie Hennessey

Album NameNo Longer Broken

Label:  none

Genre:  Country Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Every Song is You; 2.  Whiskey Charm; 3.  No Longer Broken; 4.  Sugar and Rain; 5.  You Can’t Unpull a Trigger; 6.  Let me Go; 7.  Right for Right Now; 8.  I’m Leaving the Fairytale Behind; 9.  Woman

 Publicist:  none

Review:  Debbie Hennessey has been a force in indie music DIY circles for many years.  On her latest offering, she co-writes with such other notable indie writers as Courtney Leigh Heines and Athena Marie, crafting an intensely listenable album of country tinged rock.  The album is perfectly produced and mixed by Jeffery Marshall, who also co-writes six of the tunes.  But what truly sets these songs apart from the majority of country music today is the voice of Hennessey, entirely different from any other female voice you will hear.  It is this difference that provides Hennessey’s signature and makes her music unique.

As far as the songs, the lyrics are definitely relatable and should connect with listeners who are struggling with the same issues as the songwriters.  Best tracks on the album are “Every Song is You,” the title track, “Sugar and Rain” and “Right for Right Now.”  The other stand out song is the one tune not written by Hennessey, the brilliant duet with singer songwriter Lexie Hofer, “Woman.”

Recommendation:  This one is a no-brainer.  Between the lyrical content and the musical accompaniment, and a voice that stands out from the pack, No Longer Broken is a definite Get It for lovers of great music.

nonets_brightlight_coverart

Artist Name No Nets

Album NameBright Light

Label:  none

Genre:  90’s Punk-tinged Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Dark Matter;  2.  Heavily On My Side;  3.  Black Diamond; 4.  Holes; 5.  Morning; 6.  Bright Light; 7.  Lucky One; 8.  Gettin’ Despondent; 9.  Gilded Cage.

Publicist:  Noisy Ghost PR

Review:  With a sound reminiscent of the 90’s band The Cure, No Nets springs forth from the Brooklyn stomping grounds with an intriguing mix that is set for release on October 21.  Even though the album has not yet been released, the band has been busy with launching its first single “Dark Matter,” as well as a lyric video for “Heavily on my Side.”

The vocals are not pretty, but you wouldn’t expect that from a punk band.  What stands out on this album is the frentic energy that permeates each track with a sound that grabs hold of your earbuds and demands your attention.  This is an album that will get your body moving to the beat while the subtle message permeates your brain.  For that reason alone, Bright Light achieves its mission to stand out from the rest of the indie rock pack.  Best tracks include “Dark Matter,” “Holes,”  the title track and “Lucky One.”

Recommendation:  If you like the pretty voices of singer-songwriters, this is not the CD for you.  But if you enjoy indie rock and are more interested in the musicality of good punk-tinged rock, then you should definitely Get It.

raefitzgerald_popularsongsforwholesomefamilies_coverart

Artist NameRae Fitzgerald

Album NamePopular Songs for Wholesome Families

Label:  none

Genre:  Indie blues-tinged rock

Track Listing:  1.  Earth, Everything; 2.  Jackal ii; 3.  Copper & Genesis; 4.  Your Side of the Mountain; 5.  False Moon; 6.  Dark Man; 7.  Lost in Ukrainian Village; 8.  Magic Town; 9.  Medicine Cart; 10.  Tower; 11.  Jackal

Publicist:  Noisy Ghost PR

Review:  Deep in the heart of Alabama is a special place called Muscle Shoals, which has been producing its own sound for many years.  Out of that sound comes the heartfelt lyrics and voice of Rae Fitzgerald, who grabs your attention from the first notes of her latest offering, Popular Songs for Wholesome Families.  Don’t let the album name fool you – this collection of thought-provoking songs is just plain good music.  Fitzgerald’s voice soothes your soul while her lyrics make their way into your brain, giving you true musical food for thought.  Strongest tracks include “Copper & Genesis,” “Your Side of the Mountain,” “False Moon,” “Dark Man,” and “Medicine Cart.”

Recommendation:  If you like your music with meat, then Fitzgerald is definitely an artist you will like.  Her thought-provoking lyrics and the personal reflections they contain earn Popular Songs for Wholesome Families a definite Get It rating.

Jon Mullane’s new album simply shines

Last week we told you about Jon Mullane and the release show for his new album and the documentary about his life.  Today we will be reviewing that album, and sharing our interview with this amazing indie artist.

Shine kicks off with an old-fashioned 90’s rocker “My New American Girl,” which immediately lets the listener know that Mullane has come to play.  It is catchy, up beat, and totally radio friendly.  That trend continues with the second track, “Shine on Tonight,” and the third track, “Way Up,” which could be the new anthem for positivity.

Honestly, there isn’t a weak track on this album.  The hits just keep coming in track four “In Your Life” and track five “Don’t Let Go,” before Mullane changes gears with a power ballad at track six, “Any Other Way.”  Track seven brings us the amazing hit “Born Beautiful” before giving way to the rocking “Take me Away” at track eight.  The album closes with two more amazing tracks, “So Into U” and “Body Rock” before providing a bonus track remix of “Any Other Way” with just piano and voice.  “Body Rock” is perfect rocker that puts an exclamation point on the statement that is Shine.

All in all, this album has set the bar for indie pop/rock and made Mullane the frontrunner for an LA Music Critic Award for the second half of 2016.

Now that you’ve read the review, sit back and learn things about this amazing indie artist.

IVB:  How long have you been performing?

JM:  Since I was 15, in high school.

IVB:  Who do you consider to be your influences?

JM:  U2, Bowie, any song with a great melody!

IVB:  What makes your new release so special?

JM:  Every song on this album creates a sense of enthusiasm in the listener, and I have been told by many that the songs bring them both comfort and optimism.

We’ve released three singles and music videos before releasing the album, one of which, ‘My New American Girl’ broke Top 40 on the Hot AC Billboard Radio chart.
The music video for ‘Any Other Way’ won an HMMA (Hollywood Music in Media Award) for Best Music Video.

The song, “Born Beautiful,” encourages all of us to embrace the beauty we can find within ourselves, and through this song and its video, in which a young woman rejects suicide, I have formed partnerships with mental health organizations, including the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA.org), the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI.org – US), and the Campaign to Change Direction (changedirection.org – US), to help raise awareness and change the culture of mental health.

Essentially, I’ve developed a musical story leading up to the release of the full album.

IVB:  What are your future plans?

JM:  The album release last Thursday was coordinated with the release of a documentary about my life and music career, Jon Mullane – Shine On.

My current single from the album, “Born Beautiful,” has been released as well as a video for the song, which has been nominated for a 2016 IMEA (International Music & Entertainment Award) for Best Music Video. I have also been nominated for Best Pop Artist this year.

After the release party, I will be going out on tour across the US, Canada, and Europe. Tour planning is underway.

IVB:  Do you have any stories you want to share about your band – touring, recording, or fan interaction.

JM:  There is nothing more fulfilling than hearing from a fan that has been touched by my music.  I received this e-mail from a fan in Austria:

“Hi my friend Jon,

I pray, that all is well with you and your dear ones my friend?

Really always newly thanks for your amazing music, to me, you are one of the greatest composers and musicians of all time and I always hope, that you and your mates will make in the near future another record. I will forever support you and still love all your albums so very much.

Sadly, my beloved dad Peter is very weak and down, the side effects of the chemotherapy are horrible.

But especially I never give up to trust in God and music always is medicine to me too.

Take care my friend, know, I always appreciate you Jon and keep you and all the ones in your life in my prayers and thoughts too.

Sending you all my best wishes and kindest regards from very hot Austria,

yours forever friend and fan”

Mullane is a wonderful addition to any listener’s “must-have” indie music catalog.  To find out more about him, check out his website and Facebook pages and follow him on Twitter and Instagram.

Get it or Forget it: Good Field, Ancient Warfare, Elouise

We’re back with another edition of our Get it or Forget it series.  This week we will give you the rundown on three more artists whose publicists have submitted material for review.  Our first two artists come to us courtesy of Michelle King of Noisy Ghost PR, while the third comes from Kim Grant at KG Music Press.  Thanks to them for the opportunity to review their clients’ offerings.

good-field

Artist NameGood Field

Album NameFuture Me

Label:  Piscino Records

Genre:  Indie Pop Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Future Me; 2.  Business; 3.  Control; 4.  Hospital Bed; 5.  Telecommunication; 6.  Holdin’ On; 7.  Wait; 8.  Tonight; 9.  At the Airport; 10.  Do it

 Publicist:  Noisy Ghose PR

Review:  With a voice reminiscent of a cross between Tom Petty and Eric Clapton, Paul Prince and his bandmates in Good Field deliver a brilliant album that was two years in the making.  Although the album was first released in July 2015, Future Me is the type of album that stays relevant and fresh, and provides top value for your entertainment dollar.

Every song is fun to listen to, with a strong bass line, a memorable voice and lyrics you can sink your teeth into.  Once you listen to it, you can easily see why the album reached #2 on the CMJ Radio Select Self-Released Chart.  Strongest tracks include the title track, “Control,” “Telecommunication,” “Tonight,” and “Do It,” and any one of them would be a perfect fit for radio.  in addition, “Hospital Bed” has a sound reminiscent of “Last Dance with Mary Jane.”

Recommendation:   This one is a no brainer – definitely Get It, relax and play it until the grooves wear out.

ancient-warfare

Artist NameAncient Warfare

Album Name:  The Pale Horse

Label:  Alias Records

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Darlin; 2.  Dreamcatcher; 3.  Gunsmoke; 4.  The Last Living Trial; 5.  Tusk & Mouth; 6.  Lickin’ Lies; 7.  Rolling Tides; 8.  Wintertimes

 Publicist:  Noisy Ghost PR

Review:  Ancient Warfare call themselves “southern gothic/drone rock,” but to this reviewer, this is simply indie rock.  Featuring Echo Wilcox on guitar and lead vocals; Emily Hagihara on drums, keys and background vocals; Derek Rhineheimer on bass and backing vocals and Seth Murphy on cello, Ancient Warfare combines elements of indie and progressive rock to create a welcome sound in the indie marketplace.  Wilcox’s vocals are not pretty, but they are effective and mesh well with the down-south feel of the music, which is reminiscent of The Doobie Brother’s Black Water as well as early Led Zeppelin.  Strongest tracks include “Gunsmoke” and “The Last Living Trial,” with their amazing violin provided by Rachel Yanarella, the eerie guitar work joined with more amazing violin on “Lickin’ Lies,”  and the haunting sound of “Rolling Tides,” both instrumentally and vocally.

Recommendation:  We highly recommend you Get It.  We believe The Pale Horse will become one of your favorite listens.

elouise

Artist NameElouise

Album Name:  Deep Water

Label:  None

Genre:  Americana/Alt Country/Bluegrass

Track Listing:  1.  I’ll Fly Away; 2.  Deep Water; 3.  Saturn Bar; 4.  Amazing Grace; 5.  Shadow of the Pines; 6.  Oh Lord; 7.  Evil; 8.  Hurricane; 9.  I’ll be Good to you; 10.  Black Horses; 11.  East Jesus; 12.  Silent Night; 13.  Fire and Brimstone

 Publicist:  KG Music Press

ReviewDeep Water is the debut album from alt country/Americana band Elouise, based in the small Los Angeles community of Altadena.  With a sound the band calls “Blackgrass” and which sounds eerily like something out of New Orleans’ Bourbon Street, Elouise redefines what it means to be an Americana/bluegrass band.  Composed of Elouise Walker, John Chamberlin, Rich Dembowski, Michelle Beauchesne and William Bongiovanni, the band adds some amazing guest musicians to the mix, including Dave Aron on clarinet, Sam Prevost on trombone and Colin Nairne on mandolin.

Among the high points of this album are the original arrangements they have given to such stalwart and traditional hymns as “I’ll Fly Away” and “Amazing Grace.”  This music would be perfect for placement in television and film, especially on a show like NCIS:  New Orleans.

This is an album that needs to be experienced from start to finish, as each track builds on the previous one to create a soundtrack of life in the deep south.

Recommendation:  We would be remiss if we did not give this debut album a rating of Get It.  While no one could possibly say that the album is pretty or vocally stunning, it should be part of every serious music lover’s collection.  It is gritty, provocative and real, and for that reason alone, we highly recommend it.

Camille Bloom’s newest release exposes her talent

Seattle-based indie artist Camille Bloom is an open book in her latest offering, Pieces of Me, which she released on September 9.  Over the years, Bloom has released five full length albums (including this one) and three EPs, but she has never exposed herself as much as she does on her very personal Pieces of Me.

Armed with this new release, Bloom has hit the road again on a 15 city tour in support of her new material.  Bloom also intends to hit a few more cities afterwards, including our hometown of Missoula, Montana, on her release tour.  Her travels will take her to Utah, Colorado, Arizona and California, with stops at such venues as Avogrado’s Number in Fort Collins, Colorado; Blackboard Café in Prescott Valley, Arizona; Uptown Billards in Flagstaff, Arizona; The Gallery in Phoeniz, Arizona; Bar Lubitsch in West Hollywood, California and Lestat’s West Music Venue in San Diego, California.

Music Connection Magazine said it best, “It doesn’t take too long to fall in love with Camille Bloom.  She is funny, down to earth and just an excellent songwriter . . . whether solo or supported.  Bloom’s touring career has a bright future.”

From the gentle soothing sounds of “Lift me Up” to the closing notes of the dance remix of the same song, Pieces of Me provides a close personal look into the genius that is Bloom.  Every song continues that theme, with the title track, “Hit the Road,” and “Turn Back to You” as some of the strongest tunes.  We especially love the sound of Zak Borden’s mandolin in “Turn Back to You,” which adds the perfect supporting touch to underscore the truth of her lyrics.

We strongly recommend this album, which has reset the bar high for other indie artists to attain.  This album is once again definitely in the running as one of the best of 2016.

For more on Bloom, check out her website and Facebook pages, follow her on Twitter, and subscribe to her YouTube channel.  If you’re on the west coast, make sure you get to one of her shows – you will definitely not be disappointed in the quality of material Bloom brings to each show.

The Congress’ new album is a game changer

Based out of Richmond, Virginia, the Congress have burst onto the scene with a killer sophomore effort entitled The Game, to be released on September 9 on American Paradox Records.  Thanks to JamBase, you can stream the new album today.

Composed of Scott Lane on guitar and vocals, Jonathan Meadows on bass and vocals, Chris Speasmaker on keys and Raphael Katchinoff on drums, the Congress treads that thin line between folk, Americana and indie rock with a precision that will ensure that fans of all three genres will love this release.  They will also appeal to fans of classic country as well.

From the opening notes of “Home Again” to the closing refrain of “Farewell,” the Congress deliver nine songs that belong on the playlist of every lover of independent music.

The album was produced by the band, mixed by Adrian Olsen and recorded at Denver’s Macy Sound Studios and Richmond’s Montrose Studios.  Among the engineers that worked on the album were Logan Muckler, Scott Lane and Grammy winner John Macy.  The mastering was accomplished by another Grammy winner, Brian Lucey, who has worked with the Black Keys and Grace Potter.

Truthfully, there is not a weak track on the album.  Every song packs a punch and keeps the listener engaged throughout.  It’s no wonder that this band has toured with the likes of Lake Street Drive, the Tedeschi-Trucks Band and Hard Working Americans, and is currently on a headlining tour that includes performances at such festivals as Wakarusa and High Sierra.

Indie Voice Blog is proud to highly recommend The Game.  This album should be in the hands of every serious music lover.  We think they just might become your favorite indie band.

Check out their website and Facebook pages, follow them on Twitter and Instagram, and subscribe to their YouTube Channel.

Thanks to Laura Goldfarb of Red Boot PR for the recommendation.

Review:   Swahili Blonde is the solo project for indie artist Nicole Turley, and includes collaborations with other artists including members of RHCP, Duran Duran, Slits, Devo and other LA artists.  Turley plays all the instruments herself, although she did co-write several of the songs with her close friend, Jennifer P. Fraser.  The arrangements are tight, with Tracks 3, 4, 6 and 8 being the best.

Recommendation:  If you are a fan of interesting rhythms and electronica music, you should definitely Get it.

Review:  In the same way Enya captured our imagination with her ethereal songs, Jenny Gillespie weaves her stories through a myriad of musical styles that capture the listener’s attention.  Her voice is smoky and haunting, while her lyrics give the listener much to think about.   This is the type of album you can easily listen to from start to finish, although Tracks 3, 5, 7 and 8 are especially powerful.

Recommendation:  If you love relaxing music with powerful lyrics and a soothing sound, then you should definitely Get it.

Review:  A conglomeration of sounds emanate from this diverse debut, featuring former Caverns members Kevin Hilliard and Patrick Taylor, as well as vocalist Jodi Jones, drummer/producer Martin MacAlister and Ryan Burke.  The music takes you to multiple places, with the best sounds coming from Tracks 4, 5, 7 and 9.  If you love a frentic sound, check out Track 8.

Recommendation:  Unless you enjoy alternative music that is chaotic and unfocused, you should probably just Forget it.

Shane Alexander’s new CD is pure ‘Bliss’

Ever since he burst onto the indie music scene with the release of his debut album The Middle Way in 2005, Shane Alexander has been making a name for himself.

During the past 11 years, he has released five CDs, toured throughout the United States and 11 other countries as both a headliner and as support for such notable acts as Bon Iver, Jewel, John Hiatt, Suzanne Vega, Seal, Styx and Yes, and has had his music placed in more than 100 television shows and films.  His recent track “Skyway Drive-in” from 2013’s Ladera recently surpassed more than 6.5 million plays on Spotify.

His latest offering, Bliss, is further proof that Alexander has a handle on creating incredible music.  The new CD, which will be released on July 8, is the first to be recorded in Alexander’s own Buddhaland Studios in Ventura County, California, about 150 miles up the coast from Los Angeles.

“It was an amazing experience to be at the helm in my own studio, at long last,” said Alexander, “there are many first takes on this record, which led to the songs feeling organic and honest.”

According to his press release, “Bliss is a timeless tribute to both the artist’s classic rock influences and more recent contemporaries such as Jonathan Wilson, Ryan Adams and Conor Oberst. . .” (courtesy of Kim Grant, KG Music Press).    Based on our listen of the CD, we could not agree more.

Our favorite track is the second one, “Something Real Never Dies,” but the CD is packed with great songs that should be placed on repeat while the listener sits back and relaxes.  In fact, this CD should be considered the soundtrack for relaxation.

Several of the musicians that made his last release, Ladera, so good have returned to play on Bliss, including lapsteel by Ojai’s own Jesse Siebenberg and keys by Peter Adams (Josh Groban, Tears for Fears, Ricki Lee Jones).  Alexander also adds two members of his current live band, bassist Vic Ruiz and drummer Josh Grolemund, to the mix, as well as incredible harmonies from vocalists Justine Bennett, Jamie Drake and Sarah Pigion.  He even brings back drummer/percussionist Aaron Sterling (John Mayer, The Civil Wars, Taylor Swift) from his 2010 release Mono Solo on three tracks.

We especially love the cover art, which is hand drawn by veteran rock-n-roll artist Alan Forbes.

Alexander will be performing for his fans in Los Angeles on July 6 at the world-famous Troubadour before heading off on his summer US tour.  He plans to tour Europe in the fall of 2016.
