Once again, reality got in the way of our best intentions.  Work was crazy yesterday and we couldn’t finish our Get it or Forget it column, so we are finishing it up today.

Review:  Danny Gochnour is an extraordinary guitarist and the lead guitar for Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers.  This is his first solo release and we felt the same excitement the first time we heard Tom Petty.  He kicks off the album with an incredible guitar instrumental before showing us the rest on “The Bell.”  The entire album is radio friendly and deserves heavy rotation, especially “Take me Tonight,” which could be a mega-hit.  You can’t go wrong with this amazing debut release.  Other noteworthy tracks include “Better Off,” “The American Dream,” the brilliant cover of The Eagles‘ “I Can’t Tell you Why,” “The Sound of us Breaking,” and “Better Things to Do.”

Recommendation:  Don’t think about it – just go Get this one!

Album Name:  It Seems Everything I Got is Broken Anyway Why Should I Mind

Review:  With the exception of the strangely dark spoken word “Fallow Deer” that opens the album, the music of Combings is upbeat, energetic and bright,  This German band has captured the essence of American indie music and created songs that would fit well on American radio.  Some of them are introspective, like “So Long Oxytocin,” but for the most part, they are happier tunes, especially “Turpentine,” “I Can Not be Found in This,” “Paul,” and “Penrose.”  The album closes with the eerie “Hekla.”

Recommendation:  Definitely worth checking out.

Album Name:  So Far From the Mirror

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Folk Rock

Review:  V’Nuss is a French artist with a unique hybrid folk rock style that is reminiscent of Stevie Nicks meets Joan Baez.  We love the power in her vocals, the smooth instrumentation and the retro 60’s-70’s folk rock sound.  She kicks the album off with the high-flying “Fly Away,” and the album just takes off from there.  There is not a weak track on the entire album, and we really love hearing her French on “Des Couleurs Sur la Mer” and “Rouge Sang,” as well as her jazzy side on the 8-minute long “Still You Dance” and the bluesy goodness of “Stranger.”  Nevertheless, we think “Secret Garden” is the best cut.

Recommendation:  This one is worthy of your collection.

Album Name:  Coming of Age

Genre:  Psych Rock

Review:  Led by the blistering vocals of Amie Makris, Godsleep gives  us hard-edged “Stoner Rock” that borders on metal.  Makris’ vocals are instantly memorable, putting her into the same class as Amy Lee and raising the bar on hard rock.  This Greek band just might give the American rock scene a run for their money, and deserve serious industry attention.  This is music that grabs hold of your eardrums and refuses to go away.  You will remember these songs long after the record has quit playing.  We wouldn’t be surprised to see them touring the States soon with the likes of Halestorm, In This Moment and Evanescence.

Recommendation:  If you like your rock hard, this one is a must.  Go Get it.!

Album Name:  Between The Dark and the Light

Genre:  Country/Americana

Review:  Christopher Lockett is a country/Americana singer-songwriter who writes songs in the style of classic artists like Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt.  His music is a throwback to the days of classic country before the genre went pop, and his lyrics are thought-provoking and memorable, with plenty to think about.  His vocals are rough, but perfect for this kind of classic country tunes.  This is country for intellectuals who like to have substance in their music, not just a dancing beat.  There are still sweet songs in this collection, including the breezy fiddle and sweet harmonies on “Jacarandas” and the incredible instrumentals “Phalaborwa” and “Thunderjaw.”   We also love the delta blues sound of “Shake It.”  We think you’ll like this one from start to finish.

Recommendation:  If you like your country classic and love meat in your music, then this is a great one for your collection.  Go Get it.

Get it or forget it – Brick Nova, John Daversa, 500 Miles to Memphis, Dylan Rodrigue, Travellin’ Blue Kings

We made it to hump day again, and the music keeps flowing.  We have five more to check out today, including the latest from three-time Grammy winner John Daversa.  Let’s get started.

Artist Name:  Brick Nova

Album Name:  Overgrown

Label:  1851 Records

Genre:  Rock

Review: Brick Nova was created in 2014 with Tom Drakeford on vocals and guitar, Paul Dallas on lead guitar, Jared Filer on bass and Eric Lesinski on drums and percussion.  After playing the Philadelphia rock scene for the past four years, they finally released their first EP in December 2018.   Their version of alt rock combines elements of power pop, rock, punk and alternative rock.  They have a smooth vocal delivery with intricate guitar and rhythm undertones.  The songs are well written, and should allow the band to make the transition to radio.  The first track is reminiscent of The Beatles‘ White Album, and is very radio friendly, but all three tracks have potential.

Recommendation:  Definitely worth checking out.

Album Name:  Concerto for Jazz Guitar and Orchestra

Genre:  Jazz/Blues/Classical Instrumental

Review:  This amazing jazz concerto was written by Justin Morell, and features the jazz guitar of Adam Rogers along with the Frost Concert Jazz Band directed by multi-Grammy winner John Daversa.  The concerto is composed of three movements, and adds a jazz and blues element to a classical masterpiece.  Get away from the world and enjoy the smooth sounds of this album.

Recommendation:  If you love classical music, as well as jazz and blues, then you will love this modern day piece.

Genre:  Folk/Punk Rock/Americana

Review:  We were skeptical when we read the press release about a band that mixed punk, folk and Americana, but we are here to tell you that it works beautifully, much like Flogging Molly mixes Celtic and punk.  We simply love their sound and every song on this fifth studio album works and deserves industry attention, both from radio and music supervisors.  Just from the energy we can hear in their music, we bet they also put on a hell of a live show.  We also love the two songs that feature Philip Peeples of the Old 97’s.

Recommendation:  Run, don’t walk, and Get this one immediately!

Album Name:  Cat’s Game

Genre:  Indie Rock

Review:  Dylan Rodrigue mixes acoustic folk with Neil Young-inspired electric guitar rock and punk to create his own version of music that is at times emo and sadcore like the first three tracks and others straight on indie rock, like “The Money Game.” and “Minimize the Damage.”  His lyrics are introspective and each song is set to the perfect accompaniment to match the mood of the song.  This is his first studio album, and we think he shows a lot of potential.  We can  hardly wait to see what comes next.  We really love his vocal harmonies with Sie Sie Benhoff on “It’s so Funny.”

Recommendation:  Definitely worth checking out.  Keep an eye on this one.

Genre:  Blues Rock

Review:  This Belgian band delivers a rocking  and rousing dose of pure American blues as they do on the opening track and “I Cannot Believe,” along with touches of R&B, as shown on “About This World,” “The Way it Used to Be and “Good Man.”  This album is great from start to finish, with the kind of freshness and energy you want to experience live.  It could easily become one of our favorite blues albums.  We definitely think this one has legs.  We really love the surf rock instrumental title track.

Recommendation:  Go Get it!

Review:  On his first solo album since 1994, Glen Clark brings all of his influences – honky-tonk, blues, soul, country, gospel and rock and roll to create a mix of American Roots music that will appeal to just about everyone.  This is not your traditional blues but an amazing mix of the best of multiple genres.  The title track sets the tone with its country nuances before heading into the horns and soulful sound of “Accept my Love.”  There is even one cover on the album, “This Old Road,” a ballad penned by long-time friend and collaborator Kris Kristofferson, that shows the softer side of Clark.  You can’t go wrong with this one.  You will treasure every track.

Recommendation:  Run out and Get this one.

Review:  Croatian singer-songwriter and harmonica player Tomislav Goluban has celebrated the blues for the past 20 years in his native land.  For his 10th studio album, he got the chance to come to America and record this album in Chicago, incorporating all that he had learned into a masterpiece of blues.  Goluban salutes some of the pioneers of his chosen genre, such as Jerry Ricks and Eric Noden, who played guitar and produced the album.  Noden also brought in two of the best blues musicians in E.G. McDaniel and Kenny Smith, and added special guest Joe Filisko into the mix.  The result is an album that will live forever as one of the best examples of Chicago blues.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one!

Review:  Vin Mott gives us everything that makes the blues special – wailing harmonica, great guitar riffs, soulful vocals and lyrics we can all relate to.  This one is a joy from start to finish, and blues lovers will want to listen to these songs over and over again.  The songs conjure up images of a hot smoky honky-tonk, filled with working class stiffs who just want to relax after a hard week of work.  The songs are down and dirty and take your mind off you own personal troubles.  There isn’t a weak song on the album, and we encourage you to enjoy these tracks as often as you need them.

Recommendation:  This one is a must for every true blues lover.  Go Get it.

Power has been a force in indie music for more than 25 years.  On his new band’s debut album, he brings that experience together for a blistering good time.  Powers band ( Billy Gensch on guitars, Mark Enright on bass and Tom DiCianni on drums) are joined in this effort by special guests Bob Lanza, Nick Conti and Bobby Whitlock.  From the first note of the hard rocking road song “Jack,” it is evident that the listener is in for a treat.  The band follows that opening number with the blues shuffle “You Ain’t Actin’ Right,” and the album just keeps getting better after that, culminating in the title track, with Whitlock and his wife Coco Carmel joining into the mix.

Recommendation:  Jump on this train.  Go Get this one today!

Monday mashup 2019: vol. 6

OMG – that was the best Grammys Show we have ever witnessed.  Everything that was lacking in last week’s Super Bowl was present – superstar performances, inspiring speeches and incredible music throughout.  Alicia Keys was the perfect host and her “Songs I Wish I’d Written” segment brought us to tears.  It was also about time that the talents of Women in Entertainment were clearly on display, showing the world what we already know.  We’ve got some news for you today that is the perfect segue to that, as well as five new singles and music videos for your consideration.  Here we go!

INDIE ARTISTS SHINE AT 61ST GRAMMY AWARDS SHOW

Congratulations to indie band Opium Moon on their Grammy win last night for Best New Age Album.  Huge props to amazing violinist Lili Haydn and her equally amazing band for this honor.

Congratulations also to two artists we had the privilege of reviewing here on our blog.  Composer and music educator John Daversa took home three Grammys for his amazing jazz album American Dreamers that featured DACA kids and spotlighted their cause.  Blues legend Buddy Guy won for Best Traditional Blues Album for The Blues is Alive and Well.

LA MUSIC CRITIC AWARD WINNERS SHOWCASE TO HONOR WOMEN IN ENTERTAINMENT

The Third Annual LA Music Critic Award Winners Showcase is set for Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at The Mint LA.  This year’s Showcase will honor the role of Women in Entertainment, and will feature a stellar line-up that includes Fanny Walked the Earth (the first all-girl group to release an album on a major label); multiple-award winning rock band The Spider Accomplice, led by VK Lynne; Rebelle Road artist The HawtThorns, led by label co-founder KP Hawthorn (former member of award-winning group CALICO the Band); blues phenom Brigitte Rios Purdy; Americana sweetheart Amilia K. Spicer; and two of our International winners, blues band Reloaded Norway and Latin singer Constanza Herrero.  We expect to announce a couple more artists in the coming weeks.  Tickets are now on sale for just $10 in advance or $13 day of show, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.  We hope to see you there.

BIG SKY DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL SET FOR FEBRUARY 15-24, WITH OPENING NIGHT FILM AT THE WILMA

This year the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival will celebrate its 16th opening night on Saturday, February 16 with a free screening of a film that celebrates winter culture and the pioneer who helped bring it to the big screen.

Directed by Patrick Creadon, SKI BUM: THE WARREN MILLER STORY chronicles the life and times of the legendary filmmaker who, through his annual ski films and national tours which began in the early 1950’s, was a driving force in the development and promotion of the ski industry in America and throughout the world.

The screening will begin at 6:00 p.m. at The Wilma (131 S. Higgins) with a Q&A with filmmakers and cast following the screening.  We advise you to show up early to make sure you get a seat.  This year’s free opening night is made possible by Bob Ward’s Sports and Outdoors.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week comes from Australian folk singer Short Shadows.  We love his vibe and the sentiments contained in “Nothing Good Comes from Preston.”  Check out those horns.

Our second single is a sweet pop song from David Alexander called “Falling.”  We love the strings and the heavenly vocals and think you’ll want to hear more from this young man.

Next up is the rocking sound of Signs & Symbols, who share their latest single “Coffee for Friends.”  This one will get your week off to a rocking start.

Our final single this week comes from UK band Woman’s Hour and is very powerful both sonically and lyrically.  Check out “Luke.”  We think you’ll be searching for more of their material.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first video this week is from Los Angeles street performer Katie Ferrera.  It is a powerful and beautifully shot video that shows what it’s like to busk, as well as the raw talent of this amazing artist.  Here’s “Weightless.”

Next up is “People Get Ready,” the gritty tune from another UK artist, Emma Bosworth.  The song talks about mental health issues and presents them in terms we can all understand.  Please give this artist your attention.

Our third video is a blues smoker from The Spear Shakers, who we introduced to you last month in our Ten Amazing Videos from December article.  Here is their latest, “I Went Down Easy.”

Next up is an amazing live performance of the power ballad “There has to be More” from Eliza Spear.  The song talks about transitioning to Los Angeles from North Carolina, and offers hope that there is more than just what you can see.  We think you should take her advice to heart.

Our final video this week will definitely give you something to think about, as it is all about global warming and resultant changes.  Check out this powerful and thought-provoking video from KLOGR for their song “Somethings in the Air.”

Happy New Music Friday!  Two of today’s releases dropped last Friday, one this past Tuesday and two today.  We think this is a very diverse and eclectic blend and hope you enjoy and check out these amazing artists.

Review:  This is a one-song live album that lasts for 63 minutes.  During that time, you will hear a myriad of musical styles, including jazz, post(rock) and classical, among others.  You can feel the adrenaline that runs through the piece, much like listening to a highly emotional classical suite.  All together, this magical tapestry takes your ears to places they’ve never been before, and keeps your senses enthralled with the changing aural landscape.  Make sure you have plenty of time to grasp all the nuances of this music.  This one make take several listens to grasp its totality.

Recommendation:  If you love classical and rock music, you can now enjoy them in a combined format.  Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Recommendation:  If you love metal music, this is the album for you.

Review:  Jason Robert was formerly the driving force behind Stone Stanley.  On his debut solo album, he uses the inspiration of the Mojave  High Desert to create Mudstomp Music, a fusion of 30’s Delta Blues and 90’s Grunge rock.  We have already featured a pair of these songs, “Mr. Bell” (which earned an LA Music Critic Award  nomination for Best Video (Male) for the second half of 2018) and “John the Revelator” (which was featured in our first Monday Mashup of 2019.   This is an album with much to say and an incredible way to say it, and is definitely one of the finest albums released to date in 2019.  If it took the death of Stone Stanley for the brilliance of Jason Robert to emerge, then may they rest in peace – the resulting art was worth it.

Recommendation:  Run out and Get this one – it will appeal to all of your senses.

Review:  Fiddler, songwriter and vocalist Stephanie Bettman and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Luke Halpin are two of the most dynamic singer-songwriters and musicians to ever create an album.  We love this quote from their Facebook page:  “Some have said Bettman & Halpin is what would happen if Joan Baez had a lovechild with Charlie Daniels. . .  With roots in both bluegrass and classical music, Bettman & Halpin bring unforgettable soaring vocals and virtuosic instrumentation to their original Americana Folk Music.”  Along the way, they have won a myriad of competitions, including the 2008 SoCal Music Live acoustic competition, the 2007 Topanga Banjo/Fiddle contest, and been selected one of Folk Works Top 10 LA-based female singer-songwriters as well as one of Music Connection Magazine‘s Top 25 New Music Critiques, both in 2008.  Their latest project brings all of this out, and reveals a duo that prove that the finished product is so much more than the sum of its parts.  We love every track on this album, especially the impressive cover of John Denver‘s “Take me Home Country Roads” and the amazing vocal harmonies on “Don’t let it get you Down.”

Recommendation:  Drop everything and go Get this one.  You won’t want to stop listening.  This one is perfect for your next road trip.

Review:  This project highlights the sound of this Portland-based band, and shows their firm grasp on their Mexican-American heritage, and the role of Mexican-American women like singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza in today’s America.  The title track, an anthem for female empowerment, was highlighted by NPR as “a battle cry against machismo.”  It is one of a host of amazing tracks on this album which demand your attention.  You cannot listen to this album and not be moved, as the music and the lyrics make a powerful political statement.  Listen to this one over and over to capture all of its subtle nuances.  You will come away a changed person.

Recommendation:  This album demands your attention.  Unless you intend to be Switzerland, take a stand and Get this one today.

Women in entertainment – Brie Darling, indie music pioneer and true renaissance woman

Welcome back for another edition of Women in Entertainment.  Today we are pleased to feature one of the pioneers of music, Brie Darling, who is currently the drummer, vocalist and songwriter of the resurrected 70’s band Fanny (now known as Fanny Walked the Earth), one of the stable of amazing artists signed to Blue Élan Records.

Darling has had a storied career spanning more than 50 years, and including a myriad of creative endeavors.  She joined the Sacramento Musician’s Union and played her first professional gig as a drummer when she was 14.  Five years later, she moved to Los Angeles and began playing clubs and bars until she got hired to perform as a recording artist.   She has recorded as an artist with
Fanny (the first all-girl band to release an album on a major record label), Earthquire, American Girls, Boxing Gandhis and now Fanny Walked The Earth.

Along the way, she has also recorded, toured with and performed with the likes of Melissa Manchester, Keith Moon, ELO, Ringo Starr, Robbie Nevil, Jimmy Buffett, Carole King, Nikki Sixx, Glen Campbell, Janiva Magness and The Temptations.

“I now go by Brie Darling (having previously been known as Brie Howard and Brie Howard Darling),” explains Darling.   “I’m a drummer, singer and songwriter who has dabbled in a few films, some TV and a whole lot of music videos.  I also make crazy amazing behemoth cakes and love designing and building houses . . . anything creative and artistic.   In fact, what truly inspires me is opportunity.  My motto is ‘Be open to everything and be ready for anything.”

“Besides writing songs that I have recorded, my songs have also been released by a plethora of other artists, including The Pointer Sisters, Ellen Foley, Randy Crawford, Peter Criss (Kiss) and Michael Jackson (“Night Line” is still in vaults awaiting release!)  I am really proud to have been part of writing and performing what has become an anthem for women’s rights, ‘When we Need Her.’  That song also earned us an LA Music Critic Award for Best Video (group) in 2018.”

Not only did 2016 bring the resurrection of Fanny, but also gave Darling the opportunity to compete on Cake Wars, where she took home first place.  Check out her amazing Facebook page for this endeavor.

Ten amazing videos released in January 2019

Now that we have featured our 30 favorite singles for the month of January, let’s turn our attention to our 30 favorite videos.  We have already shared 20 of them via our weekly Monday Mashup column, and now present our final selections here in this Ten Amazing Videos article.

We’ll get started with an interesting rock video from the band Nixon’s Ghost.  This one has a very retro feel, and some pretty good animation.  Check out “Once you Leave.”

Our next video is from Hawksley Workman, a truly gifted musician who we think is destined for greater things.  Here is his moving video for “Lazy.”  We think you’ll really like this one.

Our third video is a stirring live performance by Emily King of her new single, “Can’t Hold Me.”  We absolutely love her vocals and everything about this song.  What do you think?

Video number four comes from Budapest, with the rocking sound of Ivan and the Parazol.  Here is their intriguing video for “Changin’.”

For our fifth video, we bring back one of our favorite indie artists, Tiffany Young.  She has a new look but the same great sound.  Here’s her latest, “Born Again.”

Next up is a stunning video shot along the Italian coast for Czech artist Thom Artway‘s latest single, “Can’t Wait.”  We can’t wait to check this one out.

Video number seven is a deeply disturbing yet moving video that visualizes the final track to the new album by Dollshot which we recently reviewed.  “Nacht und Träume” was written by Schubert and the lyrics are based on a poem by  Matthäus von Collin.

The latest from For Esme, a truly introspective tune called “To Love,” is our eighth video for this edition of Ten Amazing Videos.  We love the segue mid-song to an almost disco-esq dance beat.  Enjoy this one.

Our next to last video this month is from the one and only Jess Ribeiro, one of the premier indie artists from down under.  Although we don’t understand what’s happening in the video (and maybe that is on purpose), we still love the sound of “Stranger.”

We close out the month with the latest video from Toronto’s treasure Ace of Wands, the video for the title track of their forthcoming album, “Lioness.”  This one will move you to the core, especially the battle with self-destruction.  Long live the Ace of Wands!

Ten great singles released in January 2019

Greetings from the frigid northwest.  We’ve been inundated with snow and the bitter polar cold, but at least the music is hot and warms us to the core.  Let’s close out the month of January with our final 10 favorite singles out of the more than 200 we received this month.  We’ll bring our final 10 favorite videos later today.

Our first single is “Belleville Blues,” from the new album by Murray A. Lightburn which drops later this month.  It is a smooth, jazzy, soulful song that provides an easy listening start to this month’s list.

Our second single comes from American artist Jesse Hite, who is currently living in France as a singer-songwriter and producer.  We love the upbeat feel of this pop song, and think you will too.  Check out “When it All Comes Down.”

Our third single is a bluesy number called “Shakedown Blues,” and comes to us from LA-based blues rocker Kail Baxley.  We love his groove, which reminds us of the late great B.B. King.  Let us know what you think.

Single number four brings us “Offshoot” by a group of five lads from Costa Mesa, California who have incredible indie rock skills but are virtually unknown.  Let’s give some love to Spendtime Palace.

We head over to Portland, Oregon for our fifth single, which is the debut from experimental jazz artist Bryson Cone.  He mixes jazz, shoegaze and experimental sounds to form the amazingly cool track, “Destination Nightmare.”  We think you’ll like it, especially that amazing sax.

We kick off our second five singles with this amazing indie pop/rock tune from LA-based Isla June.  We love the vibe, the vocal harmonies and the overall feel of “Knew you When” and think this tune has serious legs with potential for both radio airplay and consideration for placement in film and television.

We think everyone can relate to the subject of Don Brownrigg‘s latest single, “Bad Timing.”  We think he has nailed it with this radio friendly pop tune.

Sweden’s Elin K has descended on Los Angeles and offers us the stirringly beautiful track “Malibu,” paying homage to her new favorite beach.  This one will warm your heart.

Our ninth single is an upbeat dance tune called “Shoulder to Shoulder.” It debuted on Martin Luther King Day and is a call to action.   We would be proud to party with Wolves and share the message of this song.  Get on the dance floor.

Our final single this month is from Coco Bans, and we think it is the perfect way to sign off this month.  Check out the amazing vocals and sound of “Fighting Feathers.”

Monday mashup 2019: vol. 5

If you love defense, then yesterday’s Super Bowl was an incredible display of power.  Both offenses sucked, but the Rams especially had a tough time against Patriots’ Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores, who will become Miami’s new head coach.  It will be interesting to see what he brings to South Florida.  Only time will tell.  In the meantime, here’s our first Monday Mashup of this short month.  We will have our Ten Great Singles and Ten Amazing Videos articles and another Women in Entertainment profile up later this week before getting back into the Get it or Forget it reviews and New Music Friday.  Let’s enjoy the latest in indie music.

SHE ROCKS AWARDS GIVEN OUT AT THE NAMM SHOW

For the seventh year in a row, awards were given out to recognize the accomplishments of female members of the music industry at last month’s NAMM Show.  Many of the honorees performed in a concert held at the House of Blues in Anaheim and hosted by the Women’s International Music Network (the WiMN).  In addition, a Hall of Fame award was introduced this year which honored Janis Joplin.   The award was accepted by her sister, Laura Joplin, who gave an impassioned speech.  Afterwards, the other honorees joined together in a medley of Joplin’s hits, including “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart,” and “Raise Your Hand.”  Those performing included Orianthi, Vanessa Amorosi, Judith Hill, Emily Armstrong, Sarah Command, Mindi Abair and Rock Sugah.

The full list of ladies honored in 2019 included Terri Nunn, lead singer of the iconic electro-pop band, BERLIN; Macy Gray, GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer and actress;
Lisa Loeb, Platinum-selling, GRAMMY Award-winning singer songwriter, touring artist and author; Nita Strauss, acclaimed solo artist and guitarist for Alice Cooper; Erika Ender, award-winning and chart topping composer, singer, co-writer of the hit “Despacito;”  Dana DuFine, VP Global Content and development AEG Facilities

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this month comes from Los Angeles electro-pop artist Zhao.  We really dig this vibe and think this one will get your week off to a great start.  Check out “Feeling Today.”

Next up is an indie rock trio who we introduced to you back in December in our Ten Great Singles article.  Valentin Marx bring us “Last Time,” and we hope it’s not the last time we hear this amazing group.  If you are in LA, check them out at the Hotel Cafe on February 15.

Our third single gives us the rocking blues guitar and vocals of J.D. Simo, and we can’t think of a better way to keep this party going.  Check out his latest single, “You Need Love,” from his forthcoming album scheduled to drop next month.

The incredibly sweet vocals of The Desert make our next single easier to swallow.  It may be called “Bitterness,” but there is nothing foul tasting in this amazing song from one of the UK’s best indie bands who we introduced to you last October in our Ten Great Singles article.

Last but definitely not least this week is the latest single from Fred Hostetler, the guitarist for the incredible blues band Blue by Nature.  Here is his new solo single, “I’m a New Man,” which takes his music to an entirely different level.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first video this month comes from Brisbane-based artist Mallrat.  We love the cinematography and the vibe of this awesome pop song, “Nobody’s Home.”

Our next video is an interesting one from former opera singer turned pop powerhouse Emin Eminzada.  Here is his single “Treasure Me,” which should get you ready for Valentine’s Day.

Your eyes and ears are in for a treat with the new music video from amazing soprano singer Amy Owens.  This one checks all the boxes – great song, incredible artist and amazing dancing.  Enjoy “Discreet.”

Video number four combines great blues and pop with an Americana vibe from Foxfeather.  We are in love with this song, and can’t wait to hear what comes next.  Please enjoy “Come and Get Me.”  We accept the invitation.

Our final video this week is from Maya Lavelle and uses the story of Don Quixote to visualize her amazing song, “House on a Rocky Road.”  This is one of the best indie videos we have ever seen, and think you will likewise agree.  Enjoy this one and we’ll see you next week.

Review:  We introduced you to this amazing band last September when we featured their equally amazing single, “City Escape” in our Ten Great Singles article.  We said then that they belonged on the radio, and with the release of their new album, there eight more reasons for that assessment.  These songs are great, and the sound is true indie rock, with pop sensibilities and a touch of psychedelic rock to sweeten the mix.  The music is sweeping and majestic, and should also be considered for placement opportunities in television and film.  So glad that the Lost Cousins have arrived.

Recommendation:  Run out and Get this one!

Review:  Shayfer James is a gifted songwriter who is heavily influenced by the likes of Danny Elfman, among others.  He adds a touch of reggae to his mix that elevates these songs to a new dimension, and will definitely remind the listener of the great songs released by Oingo Boingo.  These songs are definitely radio friendly, especially “Mercy Down,” Boots Worn Through,” “Day of Reckoning,” and “Crack a Bottle, Run a Bath.”  This is one of the best solo albums we have heard this year.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one!

Review:  Music is truly the universal language, and even if you don’t speak Spanish, the power and joy of the words comes through in this collection of power pop tunes from Spain’s El Palacio de Linares.  The fun and upbeat rhythms will make you feel good, like the music of The Beatles speaks to those who don’t understand English.  We are proud to give this one two thumbs up, and encourage you to expand your horizons and add it to your collection.

Recommendation:  Whether or not you understand Spanish, this one belongs in your collection.  Go Get it.

Review:  These three amazing musicians have just released their second album as a trio, and it sets the standard for modern day folk troubadours.  These songs about the Mississippi, both the river and the state, are destined to become part of American folklore.  This time around, they have joined with bassist Mark Fain and drummer Lynn Williams, and feature the artistry of the Steeldrivers’ Tammy Rogers on fiddle, Justin Moses and Terry Baucom on banjo, and Mike Compton on mandolin.  These songs will become a treasured part of your collection, and provide a wealth of information for American history buffs.  We especially love the sweet tribute to the great Tom T. Hall contained in “Old Tom T. and Brother Will.”

Recommendation:  We highly recommend you rush out and Get this one.  It is truly a musical treasure.

Review:  Canada’s Twilight Fields combines elements of prog rock, ambient, dream-pop, psych-folk and shoegaze to form their own mix they call ambient rock.  The instrumentation is sweeping and broad, painting a picture perfect complemented by their stunning vocals and lyrics.  This is an album that recounts our failures but encourages us to do better.  Among the topics covered are the bombing of Hiroshima and the absurdities of the atomic age, homelessness and economic inequalities, the evils of populism and political repression, the toxicity of social media communication, animal rights, the utter stupidity of war and climate change.  It also features two stirring covers of Bruce Cockburn’s immortal classic “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” and Thin Lizzy’s “Holy War.”

Recommendation:  This one will make an interesting addition to your collection.  We highly recommend it.
