Get it or forget it – The Nightowls, Tiavara, Cultural Critic, Trautonist, Vampillia

It’s almost Mother’s Day.  If you’re lucky enough to still have your Mom around, make sure you show her how thankful you are.  We are so thankful for indie music, and have five very unique artists from Russia, Japan, Germany and the US to share with you today.  Let’s get started.

Artist NameThe Nightowls

Album NameWe are the Nightowls

Label:  Nightowls Music

Genre:  R&B/Soul

Track Listing:  1.  Don’t it Feel Weird (Falling in Love); 2.  Can’t Wait to Knock It; 3.  #selfiequeen; 4.  All the Good Things you Are; 5.  Nice and Slow; 6.  Interlude; 7.  Lift me Up; 8.  Together Alone; 9.  Laybackwittit; 10.  Get Funked Up; 11.  We are the Nightowls

Publicist:  Big Picture Media Online

Review:  Consider our mind blown.  The Nightowls hail from Austin, Texas, and have the sound of Tower of Power meets Earth, Wind and Fire.  Their vibe is flawless, upbeat, high energy and downright fun.  The music industry needs to stand up and take notice of this amazing band, from radio airplay to substantial placements in television, film and commercials.  The first four tracks are definitely hit material, and establish The Nightowls as one of the best bands we have reviewed this year.  They even sound great on slow jams, as they demonstrate on “Nice and Slow” and “Together Alone.”  They also show they can just boogie without words on “Interlude,”  before getting back to their funky groove on “Lift me Up,” “Laybackwittit,”  “Get Funked Up,” and the title track, which provides the perfect icing on this cake, as well as introduce the members of this elite unit.  There is not a weak track on the album.

Recommendation:  This one is a no-brainer.  You simply MUST Get it ASAP!

Artist NameTiavara

Album NameDelusional Tales of Grand Intentions

Label:  Self-Released

Genre:  Metal

Track Listing:  1.  The Empty Sky; 2.  Faces; 3.  Serenade of a Leech; 4.  When Silence Reigns; 5.  Among the Stars; 6.  Celestial Dance; 7.  Not a Hero

Publicist:  Effective Immediately PR

Review:  This Moscow-based alt metal band has all the elements of a good metal band – heavy driving drums, electric guitar shredding, strong bass beat and angst, with a few guttural screams thrown in for good measure.  The lyrics are even understandable, for the most part, but the vocals seem to be missing the energy and drive, and their attempt at crashing the US metal market takes a nose dive at the finish line.  They do have some well-written songs, but we believe they need to either go all out metal or drop a few notches more into alternative rock format.  Their attempt to “bridge the gap” between metal and rock doesn’t quite seem to be feasible for the long haul, although the musicianship is first-rate at times, such as demonstrated on “Serenade of a Leech.”  In the end, it is the vocals that hurt their sound, almost like a classically trained vocalist fronting Metallica.  They don’t fit together well.

Recommendation:  Forget it.

Artist NameCultural Critic

Album NameAll Electronica Must Go! (Deluxe Edition)

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Electronica/Experimental

Track Listing:  1.  Soap Opera (VHS only); 2.  Intimacy; 3.  Casio City (Blowout Sale); 4.  Terraform; 5.  High Line ’14; 6.  Themes; 7.  Shadow; 8.  Orange Ocean; 9.  Methods; 10.  Computer Chat!; 11.  humanoid tears; 12.  Vegas Future

Publicist:  Skilled Social Media

Review:  This is the deluxe edcition of an album that was previously released in October 2017 on Sunset Grid.  This time around, New York-based composer John Malmborg has chosen the DIY route through BandCamp, and has tweaked the tunes and added two new ones and new artwork to his computer-generated experimental and electronic music sound.  He even released it on cassette.  This retro style is reflective of the 80’s and 90’s influences of the music.  Although this is not my particular cup of tea, it is not difficult to hear the genius in the music.

Recommendation:  If you love electronica, then definitely check this one out.

Artist NameTrautonist

Album NameEmber

Label:  Wolves and Vibrancy Records

Genre:  Shoegaze/Black Metal

Track Listing:  1.  Fire and Ember; 2.  Vanish; 3.  The Garden; 4.  Smoke and Ember; 5.  Hills of Gold; 6.  Sunwalk; 7.  Woody Allen

Publicist:  Viral Propaganda PR

Review:  This German duo have impressive musical chops, with dramatic flairs of awesomeness.  Unfortunately, the screaming vocals do nothing but detract from the otherwise intriguing songs, which have so much artistic flair that they truly allow the listener to decide exactly what the mood is without the need for any lyrics to color that interpretation.  The music is almost prog rock in intensity, with each song averaging six minutes long.  Too bad there isn’t a button you can hit that turns off the vocals.  The music stands on its on.

Recommendation:  Musically, most metal fans will love this one.  For the rest of us, forget it.

Artist NameVampillia

Album NameHappiness Brought by Endless Sorrow

Label:  Temple of Torturous Records

Genre:  Metals

Track Listing:  1.  Winter Ash; 2.  Back to . . . ; 3.  Ggggzzggzzz; 4.  Hell PM

Publicist:  Viral Propaganda PR

Review:  We can described this one in two words:  Drums and Screamo.  There is nothing else.

Recommendation:  Burn it.

Get it or forget it – Freedom Baby, Yuki Ame, Oklou, Porter D’Poet, Girl Sweat Pleasure Temple Ritual Band

It’s hump day again, and the indie music just keeps on pumping.  Here are our reviews of another five albums released in March.

Artist NameFreedom Baby

Album Name How You’ll Grow

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Pop

Track Listing:  1.  When we Go; 2.  My Force; 3.  The Stranger; 4.  Drag the Lake

Publicist:  Auteur Research

Review:  With an amazing instrumental opening, featuring some intense trumpet and heavenly harmonies, Freedom Baby’s latest EP takes off with all the dynamics of an opening number in a Broadway musical.  The music is pure pop, with the relaxing accompaniment underneath soaring vocals that take the listener to a new level.  This music is radio friendly and also worthy of placement in television and film.  This one is definitely going on repeat, as we could listen to these four amazing tracks over and over again.  They have an amazing similarity to the orchestral sound of ELO and Spandau Ballet, with the vocal harmonies of Tears for Fears.  Definitely worth checking out, especially the powerful “The Stranger.”

Recommendation:  We highly recommend you Get this one.  We can’t wait to see what’s next for Freedom Baby.

Artist NameYuki Ame

Album NameAnamnesis

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Electronica

Track Listing:  1.  Circles (ft. Zoe); 2.  Blue Room; 3.  Love Me; 4.  Mykonos; 5.  Elisa

Publicist:  Practise Music

Review:  The first thing that stands out is the incredible voice of Zoe on the first track, riding high above the electronic sounds created by Yuki Ame.  Too bad she isn’t on every track.  But even without those stand-out vocals, the music is interesting enough to grab the attention of any listener as Ame takes off on an audio journey into his world, where non-traditional music reigns.  These tracks would make good material for a great DJ dance mix, and we strongly encourage budding DJs everywhere to check out this material.  There are so many levels to the songs that a creative person would find the resource like a treasure trove.

Recommendation:  If you love electronica, or love to create dance mixes, we strongly encourage you to check this one out and use these amazing tunes to create more art.

Artist Name Oklou

Album NameThe Rite of May

Label:  Nuxxe

Genre:  Electronica

Track Listing:  1.  Valley; 2.  Samuel; 3.  They Can’t Hear Me; 4.  Valley 2; 5.  Holy Lost Arizona; 6.  Friendless

Publicist:  World Friendly Society

Review:  This interesting EP begins with a primarily instrumental number, which is then brought back for a second time in the middle of the EP.  In between these two tracks are four more beautiful tracks, beginning with the incredible “Samuel,” which has an awesome R&B feel that is very radio friendly.  We have very high hopes for the future of Oklou, and think that she is on the precipice of success.  We really love “They Can’t Hear Me,” and think it would be a great placement on the Fox television series Empire.  Her music is anything but conventional, allowing her a world of possibilities on which to take her music to an even higher level.  She has a very bright future, and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Recommendation:  This artist deserves your attention.  We suggest that you Get her EP now, and create your own catalog of amazing electronica.

Artist NamePorter D’Poet

Album NameDreamin’

Label:  SMG

Genre:  Rap/Spoken Word

Track Listing:  1.  I Wish (ft. Sanjardo B); 2.  Dreamin’ (ft. Joseph Loren) Shaddy Version; 3.  Do You Remember (ft. BDA The Producer); 4.  Perfect Timing (ft. Sanjardo B & Selecta Chronic)

Publicist:  Serafina Media Group

Review:  With an airy musical accompaniment, these spoken words rise up and grab hold of the listener’s consciousness, sinking into the subconscious mind as only truth can.  It is easy to relate to the words, as they speak of love and relationships, universal themes to all of us.  This collaborative effort makes these four tracks an important addition to the musical world, especially the title track, which features the words of Martin Luther King’s immortal “I Have a Dream” speech.  They save the best for last, as “Perfect Timing” is a reggae masterpiece.

Recommendation:  Whether or not you normally listen to spoken word, this one will change your view of this unique musical style.  Definitely give it a listen.

Artist NameGirl Sweat Pleasure Temple Ritual Band

Album NameHyper Rituals

Label:  Evil Hoodoo Records

Genre:  Experimental

Track Listing:  1.  Mantra of the Pleasure Temple; 2.  Rite to Power; 3.  The Incarnation of Pleasure

Publicist:  Cardinal Fuzz Press

Review:  If you love noise, then you have found the perfect band.  There is some intense creativity in this noise, though, that cannot simply be dismissed out of hand.  It has a touch of the B-52’s imbedded within the intense guitars, chants, drums and screams.  This music is not for the general populace, but for those discerning few that enjoy something different.  This album would make a great soundtrack for use by the CIA and Special Forces in interrogations, as its repetitious sounds will break down any resistance.  As this is their debut, the only direction they can go is up.

Recommendation:  This one will most likely only appeal to a handful of music lovers.  For the rest of us, just forget it.
