HFF19 preview day 4 (part 2) – see it or skip it

Continuing on with our reviews for Sunday, here is part 2.  You can check out part 1 here.

TITLE OF SHOWAlive-ish

VENUE:  The Broadwater (Studio)

REVIEW:  If there were an award for the most delightful and refreshing piece of art at Fringe, then this show would be a shoo-in.  Anabella Funk is a gifted ballet dancer and storyteller that shone the light on suicide and its consequences on those left behind.  Through a well-written dialogue, amazing instrumental performances by Elias Alexander on violin, Annette Dunklin on cello and Heather Grove on piano, and stand-out interpretive dance and ballet, we learn her story, and understand why she has dedicated the show to suicide prevention.  Bravo to you, Ms. Funk – you have served the cause well!

RECOMMENDATION:  Don’t miss this one – it could easily change your life.  Remaining performances are June 16 at 6 p.m., June 22 at 8 p.m.  and June 26 at 8 p.m.  Tickets are available on her Fringe project page.

TITLE OF SHOWWigfield

VENUE:  The Hudson Theatre (Backstage)

REVIEW:  Last year we almost missed out on the stunning Pamela Eberhardt show The Runaway Clone, but thanks to the persistence of Scott Golden, we made it just before the end of its run.  This year Eberhardt has adapted a best-selling book into a project of love that has been ongoing for 15 years, and in the process has delivered one of the true gems of HFF19.  With a cast of Fringe veterans like Golden, Emily Clark, Jeff Scot Carey, Eric Curtis Johnson, and Meghan Parks, as well as Fringe newcomers Bedjou Jean, Joe Hernandez-Kolski, Connor Pratt and Heather Marie Roberts, she brings us a show that is a can’t miss hit from start to finish.  Arlo Sanders captures all the nuances of Eberhardt’s adaptation, and keeps the timing up and the show jumping.  This one will definitely be your guilty pleasure.

RECOMMENDATION:  Don’t miss this one!  Remaining performances are June 21 and 28 at 8:30 p.m. , June 22 and 29 at both 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and June 23 and 30 at 2 p.m.  This show will sell out so don’t delay, order your tickets on her Fringe project page.

TITLE OF SHOWCave Girl the Musical

VENUE:  The Complex (Flight Theater)

REVIEW:  One person musicals are usually hit and miss at Fringe, but Glennis McCarthy has written and performed a memorable show that brings a totally different point of view to the problem of addiction.  Skillfully directed by Amber Petty, it is the story of an addict who loses herself in a fantasy world, only to come to the realization that she desperately needs help.  McCarthy has an amazing voice, and delivers a dazzling performance that includes rewritten lyrics to hit songs including Billy Joel‘s “Moving Out,” as well as songs from the Disney classics Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid.  This one is worth the climb up to The Flight Theatre, and wiil have you humming along to these all-too familiar songs.

RECOMMENDATION:  This one is definitely worth your time.  Remaining performances are June 15 at 8 p.m., June 20 at 10:30 p.m., June 22 at 4 p.m.  and June 26 at 8:30 p.m.  Tickets are available on her Fringe project page.

TITLE OF SHOWCorina, From Lap Dance to Sundance

VENUE:  The Lounge Theatres

REVIEWCorina Calderon is a gifted SAG/AFTRA actress who got her start in the Sundance-nominated film All She Can, which led to her nomination for Best Film Actress at the Imagen Foundation  Awards in 2012.  Since then she has been very active in Hollywood, including appearing in the DC/Warner Bros. moving Suicide Squad, as well as numerous television appearances.  Her show tells her back story of growing up in a musical family and working in a strip club to pay for acting classes and head shots. With the assistance of the talented Jessica Lynn Johnson, Calderon delivers a masterpiece, keeping the story real as she examines her path to the silver screen.  This show is a strong candidate for best solo show at Fringe this year.

RECOMMENDATION:  Don’t miss this one!  Remaining performances are June 15 at 4 p.m. and June 20 at 8 p.m.  Tickets are available on her Fringe project page.

Artists Worth Checking Out Ten Great Singles Women in Entertainment

Ten great singles released in August 2018

We just returned from the Griz-Drake game where our hometown Griz whooped up on the visiting team by a score of 48-16.   It was a much closer game in the first half, but the second half was all Griz.  To celebrate, here are 10 great singles which were released in August that didn’t make it into our Monday Mashup series.  Enjoy these songs.

Our first single is from Montreal’s Edwin Raphael and featuring Claire Ridgely.  It is a beautiful song called “Tangerine Skies,” and we think you’ll love it.

Next is a remix by South Florida DJ LaLa of a wonderful song from one of our favorite indie bands The Cravens.  Here is the dance track “Fool/Road to Reason.”  We think it will definitely get you up and dancing.

We are really digging on our third single, “Second Chance” by the amazing KRSTN.  Her voice is truly incredible, and the song has Top 40 hit written all over it.  Let us know what you think.

Our fourth single “Kerosene” by SARRA is another amazing dance track that makes it impossible to sit still when you hear it.  Get up and dance and enjoy this track.

Single number five is from the upcoming new album by Kiyomi Hawley, and the ladies continue to bring it in August with the first single, “Miss You Love You.”  We can’t wait to review this album when it is released.

Our second five starts off with the indie rock/ska sound of Hey Harriet on their single, “Too Fast Too Soon.”  This one has a definite resemblance to No Doubt, and we love them.

Single number seven is “Down and Lost” from another band we truly love, Belle and the Beats.  This one is smooth, sexy and just plain good R&B/soul.  We think you’ll love it.

Our next single also comes from Amsterdam, and are labelmates of Belle and the Beats.  Check out “Pick me Up” from Sweetwood, and get on the dance floor.

Our ninth single is “Touch the Sky” from The Offshore.  We think  you will love their retro sound.

Our final single this month is from Becoming Bristol, who we have featured several times in the past.  We really love their latest, “Brighter Days,” and think it deserves your attention.  It brings attention to the epidemic of suicide that is plaguing us with a refreshing take on how you can help save a life.

Artists Worth Checking Out Get it or Forget it Reviews Women in Entertainment

Get it or forget it – Grand Marquis, Bob Crain, David Gerald, Elin K, Worth of Souls

Happy Yellow Shirt Tuesday.  Today we wear yellow to bring awareness to Suicide Prevention, and one of our reviews today is dedicated to healing the soul.  Check it out, along with four others and have a wonderful week.

Artist NameGrand Marquis

Album NameBrighter Days

Label:  Grand Marquis Music

Genre:  Jazz/Blues

Track Listing:  1.  Another Lover; 2.  Brighter Days; 3.  I’m on Fire; 4.  Night Shift; 5.  It Don’t Matter; 6.  Ain’t no Spark; 7.  Bad Seed; 8.  Many Rivers to Cross; 9.  Down by the Riverside

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  This amazing six-piece band was formed in Kansas City in 1998, and over the last 20 years, they have released a total of eight albums, including their latest Brighter Days.  Their music exemplifies the best of jazz, swing and blues with a timeless sound that could have been lifted straight from a 1920’s speakeasy.  The first seven tracks are originals, while “Many Rivers to Cross” is a stirring cover of the Jimmy Cliff 1969 classic, and “Down by the Riverside” is a gospel standard.  Bryan Richmond’s lead vocals are meaty and perfectly suited to the music.  What really sets this band apart are those amazing horns, featuring Chad Boydston on trumpet, Ben Ruth on sousaphone, Trevor Turla on trombone and Redmond on soprano, alto, tenor and baritone sax, as well as the equally amazing rhythm section of Ruth on upright bass and Fritz Hutchinson on drums.  That becomes immediately evident on “Another Lover,” and continues throughout the album.  The blues, with amazing slide guitar, come to the front on the title cut, and will have you jumping up, shouting “I Believe!”  Just put this album on repeat and enjoy!

Recommendation:  This one is a no-brainer – Get it NOW!

Artist Name Bob Crain

Album NameLive @ The Folk Barn

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Folk Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Pacific Nature; 2.  Fossil Fuels; 3.  Last of the Old Folk Rockers; 4.  Profits in War; 5.  Texas Text Book Massacre; 6.  Retirement Homes for Nuclear Weapons; 7.  Hippie Ghost Dance; 8.  Thanks for Having Me; 9.  The Gold Rush of 2000; 10.  Closing; 11.  The Meaning of This Song

Publicist:  Be Sharp Music

Review:  Melbourne-based folk rock singer-songwriter Bob Crain brings us the sound of his live California performance on this release.  He is a natural storyteller, and his songs bring us the Australian equivalent of Woody Guthrie.  He tackles a multitude of relevant issues, including the environment, fossil fuels, war and peace, nuclear weapons and more in these modern day folk songs.  His tone is instructional and his style is laid-back, making it easier to take his messages to heart.

Recommendation:  If causes are your passion, then you should definitely check out this one.

Artist NameDavid Gerald

Album NameN2U

Label:  David Gerald Enterprises

Genre:  Blues Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Baddest Girl in Town; 2.  Do it all Again; 3.  Don’t Wanna Fall in Love; 4.  Hug You Squeeze You (live); 5.  N2U; 6.  Need You Like Now; 7.  State of Emergency; 8.  Things I Wanna Do; 9.  Willie the Wimp (live); 10.  You Belong with Me

Publicist:  Powderfinger Promotions

Review:  His vocals are soulful, reminiscent of Murray Head, who portrayed Judas in the original Broadway cast of Jesus Christ Superstar.  His guitar playing is equally impressive, as is the fact that he personally played every instrument on this album, as well as doing the mixing and recording.  His efforts have paid off handsomely with this sterling album of original tunes, mixing blues, rock and soul into a perfect blend.  This album is worthy of industry attention, and would make a great soundtrack for a multitude of television, film and commercial placement.  There is not a weak song on the album, and it is worthy of repeated plays.  Check out the guitar shredding on “Don’t Wanna Fall in Love,”  as well as the live tunes “Hug You Squeeze You” and “Willie the Wimp.”

Recommendation:  Get this one now!

Artist NameElin K

Album NameStill Your Desire

Label:  Musichelp

Genre:  Electronic Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Living Me; 2.  Inside my Mind; 3.  Still Your Desire

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  We simply love these sweeping pop songs.  Elin K has a voice similar to Lady Gaga meets Enya, and her musical accompaniment fills up the air, perfectly supporting that voice.  These songs are ripe for dance remixes, and would make great placements for film or television.  We believe we will be  hearing a lot more from this amazing artist in the future, and are more than happy to be standard bearers for her talent.  We can’t wait to hear what comes next, because this short 3-song EP barely whet our appetite.

Recommendation:  Join this bandwagon.  Get it now and spread the word.

Artist NameVarious

Album NameWorth of Souls

Publicist:  Morris Public Relations

Review:  World-renowned pianist, composer and producer Paul Cardall has amassed 13 Contemporary Christian songs performed by some of today’s fresh new voices into a project with the aim to fight depression by restoring confidence and anchoring our hope in a kind and loving Lord.  Working with co-producer Trevor Price (who also sings “Tears of the Saints”), the album is released on Cardall’s label, Stone Angel Music.  Among the artists performing on this album are American Idol participant Kenz Hall, Jordan Moyes, Ashley Hess, Ellee Duke, Charley Jenkins, Sierra Lauren, Jim Daneker, Justin Williams and Emily Bea.  This album is a must-have for everyone who struggles with depression, or sometimes feels lonely or lost.  We believe healing lies in these 13 songs, and they are great for worship as well.  We especially loved “Lift me Out,” “That Mountain,” “How Can it Be?,” “The Homecoming,” “Tears of the Saints,” “Lay it Down,” “Push and Pull,” “He Knows What He’s Doing,” and the title track.

Recommendation:  We strongly recommend you GET this one ASAP and put it on repeat when those feelings of depression or loneliness come.
