Get it or forget it – Thanks Light, 1099, Em Joy, The Spider Accomplice, Gerry Spehar

Welcome back for another week of Get it or Forget it.  Crunch time is here and we still have more than 50 reviews to complete before the end of the month so we can create our nominations list for the LA Music Critic Awards for the first half of 2018.  Nominations will be announced on June 8.  Here we go with our next five artists.

Artist NameThanks Light

Album NameTerrifire

Label:  Enjoy Ears Records

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Alligator Tears; 2.  Healer; 3.  I’ve Seen Hell; 4.  Your Policeman; 5.  ON TAPE; 6.  Croquet Mallet; 7.  The Gulf is Calling (Redux)

Publicist:  Enjoy Ears Records

Review:  Thanks Light hits the ground running with their latest release, Terrifire, bring a new intensity to indie rock.  The tunes are radio friendly, with potential for placement opportunities in television and film.  They have a distinctive sound that seems to be heavily influenced by the Beatles, especially The White Album.  We love the entire album, but really dig “Healer,” “ON TAPE” and “Croquet Mallett”

Recommendation:  Definitely worth a  listen.  Check them out today.

Artist Name:  1099

Album NameBlindpassasjer

Label:  All Good Clean Records

Genre:  Instrumental Prog Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Silverdal; 2.  Tundra; 3.  Osiris; 4.  Under Isen; 5.  Blindpassasjer; 6.  For Seg Selv; 7.  En Druknet Verden; 8.  Tel Jorden; 9.  Det Britiske Imperiet; 10.  Kontinental; 11.  Lausanne; 12.  Vintersøvn

Publicist:  Viral Propaganda PR

Review:  Prog Rock has a new standard bearer, and it comes from Norway.  This is an album you put on and listen from start to finish, and it will provide the perfect musical backdrop to any summer events.  It is energetic but still relaxing, helping to set the mood while you chill.  Every song is worthy of a complete listen, and the album contains over an hour of fresh music.  It will appeal to all lovers of rock, from the soft to the heavy, there is something for everyone.  We really love the title track.

Recommendation:  Get this one and enjoy.

Artist NameEm Joy

Album NameThe Wanderings

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Folk/Pop Singer-Songwriter

Track Listing:  1.  Caramel; 2.  Shalala; 3.  The Feast; 4.  Sleepy Head; 5.  Treehouse; 6.  Beautiful; 7.  Hilltops; 8.  Daily Bread

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Born in Zimbabwe, Em Joy has lived in Australia and is currently based in Europe.  Were she in the States, she would be the perfect complement to The Hotel Cafe’ sound of artists like Ingrid Michaelson, Lenka and Sara Bareilles.  Her voice is sweet like cream, and her songs beg for radio airplay, as well as placements in television and film.  From the first notes of “Caramel,” it is obvious that she could be very successful here in America.  There isn’t a weak song on the album, and we really love “Caramel,” “The Feast,” “Treehouse, “Beautiful,” and “Hilltops.”

Recommendation:  Don’t even think about this one, just Get it and prepare to be wowed.

Artist NameThe Spider Accomplice

Album NameLos Angeles:  The Dichotomy

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Alt Rock

Track Listing:  1.  The Fall of the Copper Queen; 2.  Shadowstars; 3.  Swallow; 4.  End my Life; 5.  Epilogue

Publicist:  Manager Mary E. Zimmer

Review:  The Spider Accomplice  is the best band in America that you may not have heard about.  Their latest is the third part of a trilogy of EPs that have garnered critical praise and won the band a mind-boggling nine LA Music Critic Awards.  Los Angeles:  The Dichotomy will surely add to that total.   As with their second EP, Los Angeles:  The Abduction, the first song provides the perfect segue between the two EPs, and once again cements VK Lynne as The Voice of the alternative rock world.  The band is not afraid of controversial topics, but embraces them and spreads their message of hope to everyone searching for victory in a world gone mad.  The EP is meant to be listened to as a cohesive unit, and we strongly encourage you to listen to all three back to back.  That being said, “Swallow,” is an amazing song that can stand on its own merits.  We can’t wait to see what they have planned for their next project.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see them perform whenever you can.  We had hoped to have them at the LA Music Critic Award Winners Showcase at The Mint on June 19, but the timing was off.  In the meantime, check out their music video for their lead single, “Swallow,” which was released last Christmas and which was featured in our first Monday Mashup of 2018.

Recommendation:  What are you waiting for?  Get this one NOW!

Artist NameGerry Spehar

Album NameAnger Management

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Country/Folk

Track Listing:  1.  Thank you Donald; 2.  Son of an Immigrant; 3.  Anger Management; 4.  A Soldier’s Spiritual; 5.  Pearl Harbor; 6.  Carnival; 7.  Bitch Heaven; 8.  Except for the Bomb; 9.  Barrier Reef; 10.  Greed; 11.  Freedom to Grab; 12.  What Would Jesus Do?

Publicist:  KG Music Press

Review:  We had the pleasure of reviewing Gerry Spehar’s debut album last August, and have been eagerly anticipating his sophomore effort.  Spehar did not disappoint.  His down-home country sound and his superb writing skills are clearly evident, regardless of how you feel about his politics, as evidenced by the tongue-in-cheek tune, “Thank you Donald.”  His folky style continues to remind us of Woody Guthrie (check out “Bitch Heaven”), and he obviously knows the importance of words in any battle of beliefs.  He is also adept at creating the perfect musical soundtrack to complement his lyrics, such as he did on “Carnival.”  We believe that just about every music lover will find something to like on this project.  Give it a listen!

Recommendation:  Once again, Spehar delivers a jewel of folk music with a country flair.  We recommend you Get this one.

Monday mashup 2018 – vol. 1

Happy Monday.  Time for our first Monday Mashup of 2018, and there’s lots of new stuff for you.  Here we go!

FORMER INDIE ARTIST MILCK CONTINUES HER 2017 SUCCESS

MILCK has continued her myriad of successes as 2017 closes out by being named to two important lists – Buzzfeed‘s “The 17 Biggest Baddass Women of 2017 You Probably Never Heard Of” and Billboard Magazine‘s “The 20 Best Protest Songs of 2017.”  Both of these additions stem from her creation of “Quiet,” which was written as a protest to the Inauguration of President Trump, as well as MILCK’s refusal to not talk about past mistreatment, and ultimately resulted in her being signed to a major label.  That song was considered to be the #1 protest song of 2017.  Congrats to MILCK!  We can’t wait to see what she does next.

NEW SINGLES

First up today is the latest single from Jay Katana entitled “When She Dies.”  It is an impressive bit of instrumental guitar magic.  We can hardly wait for the release of his album, which we will review shortly.

Next up is “The L Word,” the latest single from Ellee Ven (featuring Prodeje).  Check it out and get your groove on.  This one will make you want to get up and dance.

Our final single today comes from the band Lesser Pieces.  “Texas” is a grooving and soulful song that should give you a sweet chill time soundtrack.  Let us know what you think.

NEW VIDEOS

Blue Ēlan Records has a pair of artists releasing new videos this week.  First up is brand new artist Polly Baker, who has released the lyric video of her first single, “Scraped Knees.”  We simply love this video and the song, and can’t wait for the upcoming release.

The second artist, Cindy Alexander, has released the official video for her song “Book of Love,” from her just-released Nowhere to Hide album.  This song is simply beautiful and is acoustically driven, as are all the songs on the new album.  Enjoy!

Last but not least is the latest from perennial LA Music Critic Award winners The Spider Accomplice.  They released their latest video “Swallow” on Christmas Day, and it was the best present we received.  Let’s rock out with TSA!

Monday mashup 2017: Vol. 24

Spent the last few days recuperating from our whirlwind trip to California for the Hollywood Fringe Festival, as well as our first winners showcase for the LA Music Critic Awards.  So happy to be back in Montana and ready to let you know about some of the great things happening in indie music.

HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL COMPLETES BANNER RUN

This year’s Festival, their eighth and biggest one to date, ran June 8 through June 25.  The event, which included 375 shows and more than 2,000 performances, culminating in a magnificent awards show that final night at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre which was attended by more than 800 people.  We gave out our first Larry Cornwall Award for Musical Excellence.  Thanks to Fringe TV, here’s a compilation video of highlights from the awards show.

KELLY McGRATH RELEASES NEW SINGLE

Former Los Angeles and now Nashville based singer-songwriter Kelly McGrath just released her latest single on iTunes on June 30.  Through the first 24 hours, this new song was her most downloaded single on iTunes – way to go indie music!  If you want to grab a copy for yourself, here’s the link.

NEW MUSIC

Megan Flechaus is an amazing artist who is primed to burst onto the indie music scene.  She is currently working on her next album project, and recently released her new single, “What We’ve Got” under the band name FlecHaus.  Let us know what you think.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Kris Angelis recently broke into the Top 10 on iTunes when she released her latest EP Heartbreak is Contagious.  This is her new single from that EP, and we think it rocks.  Let us know what you think.

The Spider Accomplice has made a lot of noise in the past couple of years, garnering six LA Music Critic Awards.  They are well on their way to more kudos with this lyric video for their tune “Atmosphere.”  Forget your Monday blues and get your rock on!

Last but not least this week, check out this video from DJ Polique, which features Jacob Luttrell (indie musician and hit songwriter for Enrique Iglesias, Flo Rida, Sia, Pitbull), as well as Snoop Dog and Follow Your Instinct.  We think it may be the biggest hit of the summer.

Happy Monday.  It was a busy week of reviewing, and we still have a few more to do.  We are also busy preparing for the Hollywood Fringe Festival and our winners showcase for the LA Music Critic Awards.  We’re happy to be able to share some news with you and kick off another week.

HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL KICKS OFF PREVIEW WEEK

The 8th Annual Hollywood Fringe Festival kicked off its preview week, and the majority of the previews were sold out.  According to my sources, the first four days of the week have been a huge success.  Not only that, but the Festival received a huge slice of press when the Los Angeles Daily News did a wonderful article on the Fringe.  Can’t wait until the 15th when our Fringe adventure begins.  #HFF17

CRIMSON CALAMITY FIGHTING FOR CHANCE TO OPEN

Our dear friends at Crimson Calamity have come a long way in the past year.  They are part of the 2017 Stadium of Fire competition and have managed to earn a spot in the Top 25.  If they reach the top 10, they will be considered for an opening spot for Little Big Town.  As of this morning, the band is at #11, and the contest ends tomorrow night.  Can you help them make it over the top?   By the way, the video they’re using is super hot.  Check it out when you vote.

NEW MUSIC

Check out “All About Love,” the new single from LA’s transplanted Danish artist Ronny Morris.  It has such a sweet dreamy feel that is perfect for your evening chill time.  What do you think?

MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first new video this week is from Superet.  With the return of Twin Peaks, it seems like the perfect fit.  Let us know what you think.

Los Angeles country sensations Honey County recently debuted their new song “Love Someone” on Radio Disney Country.  Here’s the music video of the song – we love it!

Another of our favorite indie bands, Fort Atlantic, has just released a lyric video for their single, “Just Hold On.”  We love the sound and believe these guys belong on the radio.

Closing out this Monday is “User,” the latest video from six-time winners of the LA Music Critic Awards, The Spider Accomplice.  The band will be performing on June 20 as part of the Winners Showcase on the Hotel Cafe’s Second Stage.  We strongly encourage you to attend.

Monday mashup 2017: Vol 21

Back home in Montana after a wonderful week spending time with my dad and sister-in-law in Oklahoma.  I drove 3100 miles through Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma, and enjoyed the trip.  Also got to stop in Denver and catch a performance of one of my best friends, Nina Storey, at The Soiled Dove Underground.

Speaking of the show, her opening act, Ian Mahan, was amazing.  The night was sheer perfection.  Loved the entire vibe of new songs, old songs, Beatles songs and the wit and wisdom of her brilliant on stage banter.  We have been friends for many years (won’t tell you how many but it’s more than 10), and this was the best show I have ever witnessed.  Be on the lookout for new material, as well as a new project that she shared with us.  If you loved her before, you will love her even more now.  If you haven’t discovered the magic that is Nina Storey, then now is the perfect time to come onboard.

HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL OPENS FOR PREVIEWS ON JUNE 1

The Eighth annual Hollywood Fringe Festival opens for previews on Thursday, followed by the Opening Party on June 7.  We will be arriving on June 15, and will provide daily coverage through the awards show on June 25.  We are so excited to present our first award this year, the Larry Cornwall Award for Musical Excellence, in honor of our fallen friend, Larry Cornwall aka Alice in Cooperland.  Stay tuned for our list of the 10 most anticipated shows, which will be published later this week.

The Spider Accomplice has taken its fans captive with the release of ‘The Abduction’

Back in the day, concept albums were the norm for many rock bands.  The Spider Accomplice (TSA) has taken the concept album to a new height with the release of their new EP, the second installment of their Los Angeles trilogy.

Their first EP, Los Angeles:  The Trap, was well conceived and set a pretty high bar for indie rock.  That EP garnered the band their first LA Music Critic Awards for Best EP and Best Rock Band for the second half of 2015.   TSA followed that up with a series of videos called Los Angeles:  The Abduction, which likewise won the LA Music Critic Award for the first half of 2016 for best video series.

TSA’s newest EP, Los Angeles:  The Abduction, is scheduled to be released on October 1, and Indie Voice Blog was one of the outlets fortunate enough to receive an advance copy.  In all honesty, this release could be the premier event of the year.

The new EP doesn’t just live up to the hype, it smashes it into little pieces and raises the bar once again.  The first song, “Bromelaid,” seamlessly joins the two EPs together as it segues from The Trap into The Abduction.  As the narration ends and the song begins, it becomes obvious that the listener is about to be blown away, as the perfect beat of Justin Lee Dixon on drums lays a firm foundation for the otherworldly guitar riffs of Arno Numisto, topped off with the cherry that is the incredible voice of lead singer VK Lynne.

Hats off to the amazing work of producer Steve Kravac (Blink 182, Less Than Jake, MxPx), who has harnessed the power of this super nova band and crafted an EP worthy of the members of TSA.  Kudos also to Andrew Faust (Dead Winter, Midnight Shinigami), a former collaborator who has returned to provide perfect bass and backing vocals that complement and complete TSA’s total package.

Every song on this EP builds on the foundation laid by the song before it, spinning a story that will not be complete until the third EP is released.  Notwithstanding the amazing story that is unfolding on their first two EPs, these songs are good enough to stand alone, and are most worthy of radio airplay, especially “You Still Lie.
Los Angeles:  The Abduction returns us to the era of prog rock, and is most worthy of every music lover’s attention.  It easily will become one of your favorite musical treasures and should be shared with all of your closest friends.  Indie Voice Blog is proud to give TSA its highest recommendation and, on the five star system, gives it 17 stars.
Check out the band’s website and Facebook pages, follow them on Twitter and Instagram and definitely subscribe to their YouTube channel.  You can order the EP through Bandcamp.

Getting to know the 2016 LA Music Critic Award Winners – The Spider Accomplice

We have now completed 11 of our 17 interviews with the winners of the LA Music Critic Awards, and have published seven.  Let’s get back to our next winners, an up and coming rock band out of Los Angeles who go by the name The Spider Accomplice.  They were the winners of the Best Video (Webseries) for their very creative Indiegogo crowd funding campaign The Abduction, as well as Best Rock Band.

The band is composed of VK Lynne on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Arno Numisto on lead guitar and backing vocals and Justin Lee Dixon on drums and percussion.  Sit back, grab a whiskey and learn things about this amazing trio of musicians who are taking their audiences captive.  Let me warn you – it’s a long way cause these guys had a lot to say.

IVB:  How long have you been performing?

VK:  My first time on stage was at the age of 12.  The first time I met you was at The Gig on Melrose at a Music Connection showcase back in 2005.  Basically, I’m always performing.  I’ve done musical theater, pop/rock, country rock, blues, metal, prog, goth/glam and now modern rock.  I even got the chance recently to direct theater again.  I like to do things simultaneously, otherwise nothing would get done.  I stared directing about 20 years ago.  My first directing gig was a web series.

Arno:  I first started at the age of 10 (or 8 years ago).   I’ve been in quite a few different kinds of bands and had a few influences.  I mostly play guitar and bass and started playing mandolin a few weeks ago.  I think that songwriting is fun.

Justin:  I have been playing drums since I was eight.  As a side fact, Arno and I were born on the same day but nine years apart – that makes us very competitive.

IVB:   Who are your influences?

Arno:  I love great songwriting, regardless of genre – it’s  all about the feeling the song creates:  My favorites are Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Metallica, Jimi Hendrix – classic rock in general.

Justin:  I also grew up on classic rock acts like Metallica, Iron Maiden, KISS, and Megadeth.  Their Countdown to Extinction and Rest in Peace albums especially made a mark on me.  I made mix tapes of their music.   I studied music in grade school and learned about classical and jazz music.  I loved the music of Buddy Rich and Alvin Jones, Miles Davis and John Coltraine and Thelonious Monk.  In high school I started listening to progressive metal and rock – bands like Dream Theater and the like.  I was also heavily influenced by Korn’s original drummer, David Silveria.

VK:  For me it was artists like Patsy Cline, Melissa Ethridge, and Beth Hart – they put every emotion into their music.  As a result I am very transparent in my songwriting and all my emotions come out in my music.  I also loved the honesty of Emily Dickinson in her writing.

IVB:   What made you decide to DIY?

VK:  A lack of funds.  We really didn’t have any money so we learned to improvise.   We all have very strong opinions and a very strong vision of where we want to go and we didn’t want to have anyone telling us what to do.

IVB:  Who came up with the idea for The Abduction?

VK:  Justin came up with the idea while brainstorming on cannabis.  But seriously, we all try to contribute – one thing leads to another.  Since it’s so corrupt in the (music) business these days, the only way to truly find funding is through crowdfunding platforms.  And since basically they are holding us hostage, why don’t we frame it like we need to pay a ransom to make a new CD.

Arno:  We decided VK would be the face of the campaign.  We wanted (the campaign) to be campy and different so it would stand out from the pack.  So we created a storyline to get people involved.

IVB:  Are you seeking to be a mainstream artist?

Arno:  We do have a desire to be in the mainstream market, but we all have vastly different experience in the business.  We want to do what WE want to do, and DIY offers that as opposed to mainstream.  Our music is very marketable and accessible to everyone, but we don’t want to give up our soul, our brains and our talents for the benefit of someone else.  It (a label deal) would have to be so awesome as to make us change our mind.   We’re sick of hearing the horror stories of friends who have label deals.   Honestly, you can do so much on your own now, why should you give that up to be a mainstream artist?

IVB:  What are your future plans?

VK:  We will be completing the new album, and plan to release it at the end of September.  It’s called Los Angeles:  the Abduction, and it contains six tracks.  We are trying to take one thing at a time.  At t his point, touring is an expensive proposition.  We’ve been spending all the money we raised on Indiegogo to complete the album and promote it.    Right now there are no plans to tour in the near future.

IVB:  Any good stories from touring/recording/performing?

VK:  Honestly, most of them are unprintable, but there was this time . . . We were so devastated and at the same time so angry when the van break down while we were on tour.  It began making such a horrible noise and then it just died in front of a Catholic church near the Arch in St. Louis at 10:30 pm.  It truly was a POS and a rolling death trap.  A guy on a bike came up and asked how he could help.  He called a tow truck for us.  We convinced the driver to let us ride in the van on the flatbed.  We had to stay out of sight so the cops wouldn’t see us.   We finally got back to our hotel in St. Louis where our guitarist was crying like a baby.  I got a message on Facebook from one of our fans that it was her husband that helped us.  We just sat around the room, sang acoustic songs and drank beer, and decided everything would look better in the morning.   The van was demolished but we got through it because we never give up.

  1. Any social media?

VK:  The usual sources – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and ReverbNation, to name a few.

HFF16 – Day Six

Day 6 of the Hollywood Fringe Festival started with breakfast at a Burbank greasy spoon with another of my wonderful friends.  This time it was VK Lynne, the sultry songtress from LA rock band, The Spider Accomplice.  VK and I have been friends for more than 10 years, and I have watched her musical growth through a myriad of styles until she has finally reached the place where she truly belongs.  Not only is she an amazing songwriter and vocalist, but she is becoming a much sought-after model.  Definitely check out her band and her work.  What an amazing woman.  Breakfast was a hoot.

Since my first Fringe show wasn’t until 6:15, I had plenty of time to relax and write.  It does feel good to have some down time, especially with a hectic weekend fast approaching.

I was invited to see a musical about one of my favorite country artists, Mindy McCready, so I decided to watch the first act of Broadway Noir and then slip out during intermission and head to the Dragonfly to see McCreadyUnfortunately, Broadway started late and so I had to leave before it finished.  However, from what I saw, it was a fun show with a great cast, and I wish I could have seen the whole show.

Broadway

The music and show were wonderfully written by Dan Sugi, who also plays the piano for the performance, and directed by Julia Lisa.  Check out their final show on June 19 at 3:45 p.m.

Back to the Dragonfly for McCready.  The show was lovingly created and written by Jon Bernstein and Jennifer Blake and stars Blake as McCready.  The musical direction was by Brady Harris and Michael Ursu and overall direction by Robert Glen Decker.  The rest of the cast includes Zack Crosby, Robert Hardin, Craig Umhoefer and Ursu.

McCready

The frustrating thing about this show is the untapped potential.  The story is great, Blake has a wonderful voice and a true connection to McCready, but the overall production just didn’t jell.  It seems to me that the biggest issue with this show is a lack of confidence by the cast, with the exception of Blake and Hardin.  I think they have the talent, but need further work to bring it out.

If you love the McCready’s music, check out the show and let me know what you think.  The remaining schedule is June 21 at 7:30 p.m. and June 26 at 2:30 p.m.

By this time I was ready to be wowed as I headed back to Sacred Fools for the opening night performance of My Big Fat Blonde Musical (“MBFBM”) by Theatre Unleashed member Theresa Stroll.  Mission accomplished!

Blonde Musical

OMG!  Stoll has created a masterpiece about accepting one’s self without giving up on dreams and ambitions.  With the assistance of her fiance’ Bobby McGlynn, and under the superb direction of Jennifer Lynn Johnson, MBFBM delivers its message of positivity with both barrels.  You cannot help but be inspired by the story of Stoll’s struggles and her victory over them in reaching her goal of becoming an actress.  Her songs are catchy, her dialogue is witty and her portrayal of the people she encountered during this time is spot on.  I’m sure each of us have faced similar rivals in our quest to better ourselves and reach our goals and potential.

Kudos also to the multi-talented Lindsay Braverman for her wonderful choreography.  MBFBM is truly one of the premier shows at HFF16, and we highly recommend it, especially if you need a positive lift to raise your spirits and your outlook on life.  Don’t miss one of the remaining performances on June 20 at 6:30 p.m., June 23 at 11:30 p.m. or June 25 at 8:30 p.m.

I was really looking forward to my last show of the day, Live From the Grave, it’s John Belushi (“LFTGraveIJB”).   SNL seems to be a popular subject this year, with shows from Larraine Newman’s niece (Charlotte’s Shorts), as well as shows about Gilda Radner and Richard Pryor.  Needless to say, a story about Belushi was almost too incredible to imagine, and LFTGraveIJB more than lived up to the challenge.

JB

Jack Zullo has created a masterful tribute to one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.  Despite his death in 1982, Belushi continues to reign as a gifted writer and comic who helped launch SNL, and this show further added to that legacy.  Special kudos to Keith Saltojanes for his stirring portrayal of Dan Aykroyd.  His version of “Rubber Biscuit,” combined with his duet with Zullo on “Expressway” rocked like it was the original Blues Brothers on stage.  The packed house was on its feet by the end of the show, cementing the fact that this show is a winner.

Don’t miss the chance to see it.  Their remaining performances are June 25 at 6:30 p.m. and June 26 at 3 p.m. at the Three Clubs.

Afterwards I had a blast hanging in the bar with fringeships old and new, including David Haverty, Shannon Nelson, Brendan Hunt and Lauren Van Kurin, and got a t-shirt from Zullo.  You’ll see me wearing it around the Fringe on Saturday.

Happy fringing.
