Get it or forget it – Breezy Rodio, Kevin Daniel, Peter V Blues Train, Bichkraft, Caroline Says

Beware the Ides of March!  Good thing we’ve got five more reviews for you today to take your mind off that.  Each of these albums will be released tomorrow, so get a head start and check them out today.

Artist NameBreezy Rodio

Album NameSometimes the Blues Got Me

Label:  Delmark Records

Genre:  Blues

Track Listing:  1.  Don’t Look now, but I’ve got the Blues; 2.  Change Your Ways; 3.  Wrapped up in Love Again; 4.  I Walked Away; 5.  Make me Blue; 6.  Let me Tell you What’s Up; 7.  Sometimes the Blues got Me; 8.  I Love you So; 9.  You Don’t Drink Enough; 10.  The Power of the Blues; 11.  A Cool Breeze in Hell; 12.  Doctor From the Hood; 13.  Blues Stay Away From Me; 14.  Fall in British Columbia; 15.  Not Going to Worry; 16.  One of a Kind; 17.  Chicago is Loaded with the Blues

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  Music, unlike anything else, has the power to reverse the effects of time, and Breezy Rodio is an expert in that field.  His style of traditional blues ranges from 1940’s to today’s funky progressive version.  Rodio could not have crafted a finer debut than this amazing 17-song collection.  Any listener would be hard pressed to find a better catalog of blues songs of various styles.  Rodio is a guitar virtuoso and every blues lover should immediately take steps to add this one to their library.

Recommendation:   You had better Get it.  This one is a must-have.

Artist NameKevin Daniel

Album NameMyself Through You

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Country/Americana

Track Listing:  1.  Myself Through You; 2.  Golden; 3.  Born a Preacher; 4.  Faded Red; 5.  Hardcore Medicine

Publicist:  HiDanaGirl

Review:  We were totally wowed by this amazing EP.  The voice of Kevin Daniel is very reminiscent of early Toby Keith with just a taste of Zac Brown, and his songs are just as well crafted.  From the first note to the last, we were mesmerized by his stories, his voice, his instrumentation and his presence.  Where has he been hiding?  His music could radically change the face of today’s country music, and the industry would be wise to stand up and take notice of him.  We love all five songs, but especially “Born a Preacher.”  We can’t wait to hear more.

Recommendation:  Hop onboard this train NOW – Get this one ASAP!

Artist Name Peter V Blues Train

Album NameRunning out of Time

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Blues

Track Listing:  1.  Stay on Track; 2.  Cherry on the Cream; 3.  Buzzed Busted & Blue; 4.  Worried Life Blues; 5.  Running out of Time; 6.  Time to Collect; 7.  Youngblood; 8.  Time for me to Go; 9.  Freedom; 10.  Love me like a Man; 11.  Lay Down my Friend

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  What would you get if you combine Huey Lewis’ voice with the hottest blues band on the east coast – the Peter V Blues Train, of course.  This band brings their rocking blues to the ears of blues lovers everywhere with the release of their latest album, Running out of Time.  This one also is great from the first note to the last, and is truly worthy of the repeat button.  Danny Walsh’s sax, combined with the soulful voice and outrageous guitar licks of Peter V is the perfect combination for audio nirvana.  You cannot go wrong with this one.

Recommendation:  Definitely drop what you’re doing and Get this one!

Artist NameBichkraft

Album Name800

Label:  Wharf Cat Records

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Reflection; 2.  Ashley; 3.  Yonder; 4.  Introducing Yourself; 5.  13 Again; 6.  Night Lamp; 7.  Some People Have all the Luck

Publicist:  Promo Juke Box

Review:  The words are in Russian, but the music is pure rock and roll.  Kiev based Bichkraft recently signed with American label Wharf Cat Records, and the Ukranian invasion has begun.  The music is universal, although the language barrier may prove difficult for the band.  Their music is a loose combination of shoegaze and post-punk, which would translate well for the underground crowd but is not very commercial.

Recommendation:  If you like the avant-garde and underground rock scene, then this band is probably right for you.  For the rest of us, forget it.

Artist NameCaroline Says

Album NameNo Fool Like an Old Fool

Label:  Western Vinyl

Genre:  Indie Pop

Track Listing:  1.  First Song; 2.  Sweet Home Alabama; 3.  Mea Culpa; 4.  A Good Thief Steals Clean; 5.  Rip Off; 6.  Black Hole; 7.  Cool Jerk; 8.  I Tried; 9.  Lone Star Tall Boy

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  Caroline Says is without peer in today’s indie market, although her sound is a throwback to such avant-garde artists as Bjork, Kate Bush and the like.  She recorded this sophomore album while simultaneously working three jobs.  Her voice is wispy and seems to be coming from a long way off, while the undertones of her music come from a much darker place.  “First Song” is a bust, but she sounds better on her current single, “Sweet Home Alabama.”  We really like the more upbeat sound of “Mea Culpa,” “A Good Thief Steals Clean,”

Recommendation:  This one might be a gamble, unless you like to be on the cutting edge.  This one is up to you, but we’re gonna pass.

Artists Worth Checking Out Reviews Ten Great Singles Women in Entertainment

Ten great singles released in February 2018

Today we’ll take a break from our Get it or Forget it series and bring you ten of the amazing singles we have received that were released in February 2018.  They are in no particular order.  Here we go.

First up is “Apartment,” a jazzy and smooth single from a new project named Rubēhill.  We really love the groove of this song and think you will too.  We think this one could easily find a home on Top 40 radio.

Next up is an anthem for girl power by R&B/Soul artist GNA.  It’s called “Love Me” and we really do.  Considering this is Women’s History Month, we think it is the perfect single for the strong independent woman in your life.

Our third single comes from Toronto-based Freedom Baby, who we introduced to you last September.  It is a moving ballad called “When we Go,” and it gives us strength and purpose.  Let us know what you think.

Next up is an amazing European act named Garden City Movement, which just released their album, Apollonia.  The single is called “Bitter Moon,” and we think it has the right mix for American radio.

Every so often one of those voices comes around that you immediately stop and take notice, voices like Beyonce, Rhiannon, and Alicia Keys.  Allow us to introduce Yasmeen, who we think belongs in that list.  Here is an acoustic version of her hit, “Half of Me.”

Our next single comes from Atlanta-based artist Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics.  They have achieved great success in the digital world, due in no small part to the quality of their songs.  Although we don’t particularly like the intro, we do love the song, so check out “Call Out my Name.”

We think you’ll really love our next single, “Going to the Grave,” by the incomparable Karrie Hayward.  This song is hot.

Next up is the amazingly soulful voice of Saby Cheek with her single, “My Captain Jack.”  Wow – where has she been hiding.  We really love this sound.

Our next to the last single comes from indie pop outfit Arms Akimbo.  We love the beat and the feel of this potential radio smash, “Seven Mirrors.”

Our final single is “Wilder Days” by British pop band Tors.  We think it’s the perfect Top 40 tune to close out this edition.  Please let us know what you think.  It reminds us of so much that is still good about our Top 40 radio, and we strongly encourage the industry to check these guys out.

We’ll be back tomorrow with more Get it or Forget it.  Next Wednesday we will present ten of the best music videos released in February 2018.  Until then . . .

Get it or forget it – Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps, Roberta Donnay and the Prohibition Mob Band, Melanie Edwards, Teddy and The Love Gang, Tim Woods

Just when we thought we were caught up, we get additional review requests over the weekend.  Consequently, we have five reviews for you today that have already been released.  Tomorrow we will bring you the Top 10 Singles Releases we have received recently.  Thursday and Friday we will have 10 reviews for albums being released on March 16.  Here we go!

Artist NameTeresa James and the Rhythm Tramps

Album Name Here in Babylon

Label:  Jesi-Lu Records

Genre:  Blues/Soul/Roots

Track Listing:  1.  I Know I Ain’t Been so Perfect; 2.  Here in Babylon; 3.  Give me a Holler; 4.  Head up, Heart Open; 5.  I Keep Drifting Away; 6.  Ground Zero; 7.  Hold On; 8.  You had to Bring That Up; 9.  The day the Blues Came to Call; 10.  I Gotta Roll; 11.  21st Century Man; 12.  Find me a Bar

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  The first thing you notice about this album is the sweet and smooth voice of Teresa James, which rises above the instrumental background.  The band James has assembled are some of the best in their field, and time and time again they provide her with the perfect accompaniment for her voice and the well-crafted songs.  Right off the bat, the amazing B3 of Mike Finnegan meshes nicely with the Wurlitzer of James.  Add to that the funky drumbeat of Jay Bellerose, the magnificent bass of Terry Wilson and the perfectly harmonious guitar of Billy Watts and the musical package is complete.  On top of that all-star lineup, a horn section composed of Joe Sublett and Darrell Leonard join in on the NOLA-inspired track “Give me a Holler.”  James also pays her respects to the incredible Greg Allman on the track “The Day the Blues Came to Call.”  In fact, this entire album rocks, but our favorite tracks were “I Know I Ain’t Been so Perfect,” the title track, “Give me a Holler,” “I Keep Drifting Away, “Ground Zero,” “Hold On,” “I Got to Roll,” and “21st Century Man.”

Recommendation:  Get this one like there’s no tomorrow.  It will appeal to just about everyone.

Artist Name:  Roberta Donnay & the Prohibition Mob Band

Album Name:  My Heart Belongs to Satchmo

Label:  Blujazz

Genre:  Jazz/Blues

Track Listing:  1.  Sugar (That Sugar Baby o’ Mine); 2.  My Bucket’s Gotta Hole in It; 3.  I’m in the Market for You; 4.  Ol’ Man Mose; 5.  That’s my Home; 6.  Basin Street Blues; 7.  Up a Lazy River; 8.  I’m a Ding Dong Daddy (from Dumas); 9.  Do you Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans; 10.  On the Sunny Side of the Street; 11.  The Music Goes Round and Round; 12.  Sweet Georgia Brown; 13.  I’m Shootin’ High; 14.  A Kiss to Build a Dream On; 15.  Pennies From Heaven

Publicist:  Blujazz Label and Promotion

Review:  Roberta Donnay has made it her mission to bring back the musical stylings of the Jazz Age in America.  She has compiled an impressive list of standards, and put her own twist on them, including a mixture of jazz, blues, swing and soul influences into these brilliant covers.  Donnay’s voice is pure sugar and honey, and captures the emotion of these time-honored jazz standards.  These tracks would make the perfect soundtrack for a number of television shows, including The Originals, NCIS: New Orleans, and more, as well as film and commercials.  Among the best tracks are some of our favorites, including “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “Pennies From Heaven.,” as well as “I’m in the Market,”   “That’s my Home,” “Basin Street Blues,” “I’m a Ding Dong Daddy (from Dumas),” “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” “The Music Goes Round and Round,” and “A Kiss to Build a Dream On.”

Recommendation:  Don’t hesitate – complete your collection with this amazing album.  Get it Now!

Artist NameMelanie Edwards

Album NameJust Don’t Stop

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Singer-Songwriter/Jazz

Track Listing:  1.  Just Don’t Stop; 2.  Last Days; 3.  Blue Velvet Tears; 4.  Venus Too; 5. Alone; 6.  Blame; 7.  Lorelei

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  The beautiful sound of a solo piano lifts up the music, topped off with the cherry that is the sweet, airy and uplifting voice of Melanie Edwards.  These songs are so well written that they should be considered as instant classics, and would provide music supervisors the perfect balance for their film, television and commercial project.  The title track could be the theme song for almost any athletic championship, with its encouraging words.  The organic flow between piano and organ on “Venus Too” is simply heavenly, as are the strings and synth on “Alone.”  The album closes with the masterful “Lorelei,” which could have been written by one of the Renaissance composers like Mozart or Handel.  It’s airiness and majesty are exquisite, and it provides the perfect ending for this masterpiece.  All we can say is that we feel better after having listened to this album than we did before we began.  We expect great things in the future from this songbird.

Recommendation:  This album will provide hours of relief from stress and will encourage you to keep up the fight.  Don’t delay, Get it Today!

Artist NameTeddy and The Love Gang

Album NameKid Forest:  Twisted Homes

Label:  Nordic Records/PaintedBlack

Genre:  Indie Pop/Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Go With the Dream; 2.  Nozomi; 3.  Daddy Flew; 4.  Mommy Sinking

Publicist:  Nordic Records

Review:  This band comes to us from Norway with an ambitious project – three EPs that combined are one cohesive concept album, featuring the character of Kid Forest and his journey.  The EP kicks off with the upbeat pop sound of “Go With the Dream,” reminiscent of the 70’s music scene before the advent of disco.  “Nozomi” continues in that vein but adds a heavy bass beat that makes you want to get up and dance.  “Daddy Flew” goes back to the late 60’s Motown sound, while the final track, “Mommy Sinking,” brings a more rocking sound to the smooth groove.  We can hardly wait for the next EP, which will be released in April.

Recommendation:  This one has a uniquely refreshing sound, and we highly recommend you Get it for your music library.

Artist Name: Tim Woods

Album NameHuman Race

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Blues/Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Can you Feel It?; 2.  Every Day; 3.  Step; 4.  Take a Minute; 5.  Human Race; 6.  Black Maria; 7.  TW Funk; 8.  Image is Clear; 9.  Trixie; 10.  Have Mercy; 11.  Where did she Go?; 12.  Leave the Earth Alone

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review: Tim Woods of the Woods Family Band is a rocking blues artist with that perfect gravelly voice and guitar licks that don’t quit.  He would be at home with artists like Ricky Van Shelton, The Allman Brothers Band, The Doors and the Grateful Dead.  This album is a kick from the first song, “Can you Feel It?” and the resounding answer is “Yes!”  You can feel it from the hair on your head down to the tips of your toes, and the feeling is great.  This is a classic rock album that needs to be at home with every true lover of music.

Recommendation:  Drop everything and run to Get this one!

Get it or forget it – The Skullers, ROCKET, An American Forrest, LadyChild, Super Hi-Fi

Happy Friday!  We’ve been working hard reviewing this year’s releases, and will be caught up as of this edition of Get it or Forget It.  That’s 140 albums/EPs we have reviewed so far this year, including this edition.  Next week we will bring you our Monday Mashup, a deluxe set of new singles and music videos and hopefully a live performance review, in addition to next Friday’s Get it or Forget it reviews.  With that in mind, here are another five artists to check out.

Artist NameThe Skullers

Album NameMeet the Skullers

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Blues Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Meet me in Memphis; 2.  Pressure Face; 3.  Eyes Open; 4.  Peace With You; 5.  One Foot in the Grave

Publicist:  Moot Management

Review:  A few years back, we reviewed Jack Skuller, the frontman and guitarist for The Skullers.  At the time Skuller was only 18.  Now, four years later, he has created a band that is taking New Jersey and the east coast by storm.  This debut five-song EP is a treasure, and exhibits so much potential for this band.  All five of these songs are great, with just the right amount of attitude, guitar, drums, and the amazing rock and roll voice of Skuller.  We wonder what the next four years will bring.  We can’t wait to see what’s next for the Skullers.  It is an honor to meet them.

Recommendation:  Don’t waste time – Get this one today.

Artist NameROCKET

Album NameGet Huge

Label:  Exploited Music

Genre:  Alt Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Giants; 2.  Hey Baby; 3.  Fading Out; 4.  Remain; 5.  Fever

Publicist:  Powder Finger Promotions

Review:  Lead singer Janelle Barreto has been a staple of the LA rock scene for many years, fronting such bands as Exploiting Eve and serving on the other side of the industry with Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group before joining ROCKET.  The band has received much critical acclaim, including multiple LA Music Critic Awards and made the semi-final round for the WARPED Tour Battle of the Bands.  This EP is just the first fruits of the simply amazing music that pours from the stage whenever they perform.  The band is planning a huge EP release party at the world-famous Viper Room on the Sunset Strip on April 21.  If you live in Los Angeles, we highly recommend that you make it to the show.

Recommendation:  Do we really need to  tell you to Get this one?  It’s just so painfully obvious that you need it in your musical library?

Artist NameAn American Forrest

Album Name Ol’ Yonder

Label:  Eat Local Records

Genre:  Folk/Cowboy Blues

Track Listing:    1.  Alberta IV; 2.  More Than Enough; 3.  Bed & Board; 4.  Pastures of Plenty; 5.  Darlin’ you Weren’t One (Rawhide); 6.  Quarter ’til Tomorrow; 7.  Diamond Joe; 8.  Yonder Mountain; 9.  Chehalis River #1; 10.  Hard Times; 11.  Lovesick (Did ya Read the Letter?); 12.  Room to Dream; 13.  Don’t Take Nothing’ (Ma and Pa); 14.  Wedding Song (Sam & Jessica, Lostine, May 20, 2017); 15.  Yonder Lies Heaven; 16.  Alberta Oregon

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  With a voice similar to Tom Waits, An American Forrest brings us the “cowboy blues.”  This collection, recorded on an old cassette recorder, includes first drafts, covers of such artists as Woody Guthrie and Gillian Welch, traditionals and instrumentals he has written between jobs while out in the great outdoors.  It is a very eclectic collection with something that should appeal to just about everyone.  This one would make a good soundtrack for a documentary, so music supervisors, check it out.  For the rest of us, just put it on and let it fill the quiet with interesting stories and music.

Recommendation:  Definitely worth checking out.

Artist NameLadyChild

Album NameLadyChild

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Out of Breath; 2.  Man Overboard; 3.  Lazy Girl; 4.  Fooled Again; 5.  Just Fine

Publicist:  Behind the Curtains Media

Review:  LadyChild is like a cross between Janis Joplin, Grace Potter and Led Zeppelin, a fireball of a performer that is comfortable mixing genres to create her own very unique style.  Her vocals soar to the stratosphere while a perfect guitar and drum musical base provides the perfect landing zone.  “Out of Breath” is pure rock before she shifts gears to a more electric and soulful jazz sound on “Man Overboard.”  “Lazy Girl” is straight ahead progressive jazz that morphs into rock before returning to jazz and would be perfect for airplay on numerous smooth jazz radio stations, as well as be perfect for the next James Bond movie.  Likewise, “Fooled Again” is a lively jazz tune that would likewise appeal to the smooth jazz crowd.  She closes out the EP with “Just Fine,” a more traditional jazz song that soars and soothes, and is the perfect ending to this dynamic collection.

Recommendation:  If you are a serious progressive jazz lover, then you owe it to yourself to Get this one to complete your collection.

Artist Name:   Super Hi-Fi

Album Name:   Blue and White

Label: Self-released

Genre:   Reggae/Rock/Dub

Track Listing:   1,  Gone; 2.  Keep it Dirty; 3.  Dub to the Bone; 4.  Fergie; 5.  Revenge of the Whales; 6.  Blue and White; 7.  Little Black Book; 8.  Space Needle; 9.  Gale Caution; 10.  Hole in my Life; 11.  Biking to Bushwick; 12.  Son of Revenge of the Whales

Publicist:  Behind the Curtains Media

Review:   The horns and discordant chords that are heard on the first track, “Gone,” are very reminiscent of 80’s ska bands like No Doubt and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, while the reggae beat that permeates the songs give it that true island feel.  Throw in some rock guitar and a driving beat and you have the makings of their second track, “Keep it Dirty.”  Super Hi-Fi continues like this throughout the album, mixing genres in the process of establishing themselves as experts at a myriad of musical tastes and styles.  It is impossible to be bored with this release, as your ears are constantly adjusting to the creative waves of sound from reggae, rock, world music and jazz influences.  We can only imagine how much fun they would be to see perform live.  “Fergie” almost sounds like something Jimmy Buffet might do, while “Revenge of the Whales” has that ELO/prog rock feel.  We really love the title track, as well as “Little Black Book” and “Gale Caution.”

Recommendation:   You simply must have this eclectic album in your collection, for those times when you can’t decide exactly what you want to hear.  Definitely Get it.

Get it or forget it – Katie Herzig, The Evening Attraction, Margaret Glaspy, Patrick Yandall, Lucy Racquel and me

It’s almost Friday, and we can’t wait.  It’s been a long week already, but we have more great music to get you ready for the weekend.  Here are five more artists for your pleasure.

Artist NameKatie Herzig

Album NameMoment of Bliss

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Strangers; 2.  Beat of Your Own; 3.  Feel Alive; 4.  Learn to Hide; 5.  I Don’t Mind; 6.  Weight Lifting; 7.  We Can’t Deny; 8.  I Want to Make you Proud; 9.  Moment of Bliss; 10.  All This Time; 11.  Me Without You

Publicist:  Right Angle PR

Review:  Katie Herzig has a sweet voice that brings out all the emotions within her well-crafted lyrics, which fit perfectly into the musical accompaniment she has created.  As a result, her music is uplifting, upbeat and full of energy and fun.  The album is well named, because listening to her songs truly brings quite a few moments of bliss to every fan.  These songs are truly radio friendly, and should also find multiple uses by music supervisors in television, film and commercials.  They would also work well for dance remixes, as Herzig has a way with crafting the perfect beat that makes the listener want to get up and dance.  There is not a weak song on this album, but we especially love “Beat of Your Own,” “Feel Alive,” “We Can’t Deny,” “I Want to Make you Proud,” the title track, and “All This Time.”

Recommendation:  This one is most worthy of your attention.  We recommend you get it soon.

Artist NameThe Evening Attraction

Album NameThe End, Again

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Retro Rock

Track Listing:  1.  The End of the World, Again; 2.  Atop Loves Mountain; 3.  Love so Fine; 4.  Say you Will; 5.  Liar; 6.  Three in the Mornin; 7.  I Just Want you to Know; 8.  Ladaia; 9.  The Beginning, Again

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  The Evening Attraction has grown to become one of Chicago’s best kept secrets, although they are hugely popular in the underground scene.  Their music is reminiscent of 60’s rock and roll artists like The Beach Boys, The Animals, The Doors, The Zombies, and the like.  Despite this throwback in musical style, their sound is so refreshing.  They have reinvented that decade while bringing the music into the current digital age, and we could not be happier with the finished product.  This is a band that is ready to break out of the underground and move into the mainstream.  Their music would break up the monotony of today’s radio airplay, and we would like to see the broadcast industry stop and take notice of this unique talent.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get up and Get this one!

Artist NameMargaret Glaspy

Album NameBorn Yesterday

Label:  ATO Records

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Before we Were Together; 2.  One Heart and Two Arms; 3.  I Love You Goodnight

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  Margaret Glaspy is an artist on the verge of breaking out.  She has taken her singer-songwriter roots to a new level with this three-song EP that shows so much promise for the future.  She is about the launch a national tour in support of her new music, and we hope she comes close enough to us that we can check out her live show.  Her guitar work is so precise, while her voice is raspy and rough, bringing life to her bluesy songs, especially on “Before we Were Together,” her current single.  “One Heart and Two Arms” is pure blues rock, while “I Love You Goodnight” is laid back and smooth, leaving us begging for more.

Recommendation:  Don’t think twice – Get this one now!

Artist NamePatrick Yandall

Album Name10 South Riverside

Label:  Zangi Records

Genre:  Smooth Jazz

Track Listing:  1.  Mister Bean; 2.  Kona Boy; 3.  Breezin’; 4.  Sunrise in Monroe; 5.  Free Flight; 6.  Thumbs Up; 7.  10 South Riverside; 8.  Memory Lane; 9.  Momma T; 10.  It’s Always Been You; 11.  Thunder Road; 12.  Hermosa; 13.  Albany Park; 14.  Jump Back James

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Back in the day, when we were active in the San Diego jazz scene, we first came across a young guitarist named Patrick Yandall.  We have followed his career progression over the years and with his latest release, he has truly attained the level of excellence that we knew he would eventually achieve.  Over that period of time, he has recorded 20 albums, played to audiences around the world, and never lost his humility or friendliness.  He is truly one of the best kept secrets of the San Diego jazz scene, and also one of their greatest musical talents.  Put this one on when you want to chill and put it on repeat.  It will keep you entertained no matter how many times you hear it.  In particular, his cover of George Benson’s “Breezin'” would make Mr. Benson smile.

Recommendation:  We give this release one of our strongest recommendations – Get it like your life depends on it.

Artist NameLucy, Racquel and me

Album NameWhere the Moon Never Sets

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Soft Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Unravel; 2.  In my Head; 3.  Grey; 4.  Millions out There (orchestral edition); 5.  Pull Down the Moon; 6.  Inside my Vault

Publicist:  Self-promoted

Review:  Combining the best of Canberra, Australia; Los Angeles, California and Paris, France, Lucy, Racquel and me brings us an enchanting soft rock sound with traces of pop and jazz.  On top of the mix is the truly intoxicating of LA’s Racquel, bringing to life the wonderfully written lyrical content of Canberra’s Lucy, encircled in the amazing compositions of Paris’ Phillippe (aka me).  This music would do well on a multitude of musical stations, including NPR, and should likewise be excellent material for any musical supervisor looking for the perfect track for television, film or commercials.  You will love every track, especially the huge orchestral sound of “Millions Out There, the ELO-influenced “In my Head,” and the jazzy island feel of “Pull Down the Moon.”  This band has taken the musical style of ELO and expanded it, and every listener will be the beneficiary of their vision.

Recommendation:  You would be considered wise if you were to Get this one.

Get it or forget it – Formosa, Andrew W.K., Reichelt, This Way North, WhoMadeWho

Happy hump day!  Yesterday was a wild ride, but at least we had some great new music to check out.  Today we’re back with five more artists for you.  Let’s get started.

Artist NameFormosa

Album Name:  Sorry for Being Sexy

Label:  Sweepland Records

Genre:  Indie Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Bad Boys; 2.  Mañana; 3.  Sorry for Being Sexy; 4.  Fuck up Your Liver; 5.  Sugar Daddy; 6.  Love on the Highway; 7.  Proud to be Loud; 8.  Pull Away; 9.  Johnny the Beaver; 10.  Never Stop Rock-n-Roll

Publicist:  Sweepland Records

Review:  These German lads have a good rocking sound, reminiscent of many of our 80’s hair bands.  The songs are heavy on guitar with a driving drum beat, and soaring vocals about various topics, usually associated with being bad.  They could definitely teach a thing or two to some of our American rock bands who seem to have forgotten their roots.  Their music is on par with that of such groups as Poison, Quiet Riot, Guns n’ Roses and others of that time period.  Best songs include “Bad Boys”, the title track, “Fuck up Your Liver,” “Sugar Daddy” (a beautiful ballad), “Love on the Highway,” “Proud to be Loud,” “Pull Away,” and “Johnny the Beaver.”

Recommendation:  If  you are a hot-blooded rocker, then definitely check this one out.  We recommend it.

Artist NameAndrew W.K.

Album NameYou’re Not Alone

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Arena Rock

Track Listing:  1.  The Power of Partying; 2.  Music is Worth Living For; 3.  Ever Again; 4.  I Don’t Know Anything; 5.  The Feeling of Being Alone; 6.  Party Mindset; 7.  The Party Never Dies; 8.  Give up on You; 9.  Keep on Going; 10.  In Your Darkest Moments; 11.  The Devil’s on Your Side; 12.  Break the Curse; 13.  Total Freedom; 14.  Beyond Oblivion; 15.  Confusion and Clarity; 16.  You’re not Alone

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  Andrew W.K. has the kind of sound that fills a stadium.  His rock is more modern but includes the prog rock influence of such bands as Kansas and Rush, with the central theme of partying.  The music is as grandiose as the cover, and we believe it does not disappoint.  There are also some 80’s new wave influences, especially on “Ever Again,” but the overall sound is power rock.    This album is jam packed with songs that belong on the radio, and that are memorable enough to be heard over and over again, such as “Music is Worth Living For,” “Ever Again,” “Party Mindset,” “Keep on Going,” “The Devil’s on your Side,””Total Freedom,” and “You’re not Alone.”  “Break the Curse” is a full-blown prog rock song.  In addition, there are three spoken word pieces:  “The Feeling of Being Alone,” “In Your Darkest Moments,” and “Confusion and Clarity,”

Recommendation:  We highly recommend you give this one a try.  It has something for just about everyone.

Publicist:  The A&R Department

Review:  Reichelt is an Australian multi-instrumentalist who we featured last month, and are very happy to be able to review his entire album.  His Indie Rock sound incorporates several other genres, including reggae, rockabilly and electronic.  His songs are well written and musically arranged, and his voice is silky smooth and uplifting, regardless of the lyrical subject matter.  This is an artist we would love to hear more of on American radio, as well as see him perform live.  We simply love the title track, “Same as Me,””Don’t Need it Here,” “This Fire,” “Solid Gold,” and “Heavy Hearts Live in Hell.”

Recommendation: Definitely Get this one.

Review:  These Australian ladies offer up power pop with driving drums and heavenly harmonies that are begging for airplay on American radio.  This is a band that NEEDS to come to America, because unlike the first track, we believe that have a lot to say.  We love every song on this EP, which leaves us wanting so much more.  This one should be played in an endless loop on repeat.  It will definitely lift your spirits, get your toes a tapping and provide audio relief to your aching eardrums.

Publicist:  Guerilla Music Promotion

Review:  From the first notes, you just know this is going to be epic, and WhoMadeWho lives up to the expectation, with interesting electronic sounds, amazing harmonies, and the feeling that they are singing directly to you.  The beat is funky and uplifting, and the songs easily become earwigs, living on in your mind ever after the song is over.  They have an 80’s feel that definitely draws the listener into the music.  You don’t want these songs to end, so don’t forget to put them on repeat.  You’ll be on your feet dancing before you know it, because there isn’t a weak song on the entire album.  American Radio Stations – this one belongs on your playlist immediately!

Review:  Gus Spenos is a sax-playing machine, as evidenced on this sophomore effort.  It brings back memories of those big band influences of the past, like Lawrence Welk, Tommy Dorsey and currently, the Brian Setzer Orchestra.  His swinging blues will get your dancing feet moving and have you moving to the rhythm in no time flat.  Just put this one on repeat, because you’ll want to hear it over and over again.  It is good from start to finish.

Review:  Bluegrass seems to be in the air today, and the latest from Nefesh Mountain combines it with traditional Jewish folk music to create their own unique blend.  Band members Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff are joined by special guests Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Tony Trischka and David Grier, making this sophomore effort a first rate smash.  They add so much to these traditional tunes that they truly make them their own.  Add to that the original tunes and you have the makings of a progressive bluegrass movement.

Review:  With a mixture of traditional and progressive blues, Zoe Schwarz and her band show America what the British Blues sound like.  This is the band’s fifth studio album, and it is clear that they have become a cohesive musical unit, delivering perfect blues with every song.  Best songs include “Please Don’t Cheat on Me,” the title track, “Way Down in the Caves,” “Shout,” “You Don’t Live Here Anymore,” “My Handsome Man,” “The Memory of You,” and “Thank You.”

Monday mashup 2018: vol. 9

March has arrived so spring shouldn’t be too far behind!  What did you think about the Oscars last night?  Besides the fact that it was long, we were delighted to see the focus shift onto the hard-working ladies and minorities who have contributed so much and received so little recognition.  With that in mind, let’s look at what’s happening in the indie world.

UM CIRCUS CLUB TO HOST FIRST EVER RENAISSANCE FAIRE

The University of Montana Circus Club is hosting their spring fundraiser, and it’s a mini-Renaissance Faire!  The event will occur on Sunday, March 11 from 2-5:30 p.m. in Schreiber Gym on the campus of the University of Montana.  It is right next to the Library on the southeastern corner of campus.

There is a $5/person suggested donation, or $15 per family (bring all the kids!)  Please pay at the door with cash!

The faire will include food and beverage (of course), a costume and “Best Knees-in-a-Kilt” contests with prizes, live weapons and combat demonstrations, archery and axe-throwing activities, circus performances, face painting, crafting workshops, and a photo booth with costumes and props.  Costumes will also be available for rent.

THE AUDIENCE AWARDS ANNOUNCE BIG SKY WINNERS

The recently concluded Big Sky Documentary Film Festival included a Native American Doc Challenge this year, which was run by the Audience Awards.  Here were their winners:

The First Place Jury Winner was Derrick Lamere, with his film United by Water, while the Jury Honorable Mention went to Anthony Florez for Generations.

Check out the top eight films which are competing for the $5,500 prize by clicking here.  Voting runs April 4-10.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single today comes from a band we have previously reviewed who has recently signed with Blue Élan Records.  Please check out “Tip of my Tongue” by Mint Trip.

Next up is a young artist named Ashley Delima, who has a lot to say with her single, “Stay in America.”  She is a living example of a Dreamer, and wants to tell everyone why she wants to stay here.   She is an American born child who was raised in Brazil but has now settled in New Jersey.  The song is a shout-out to those struggling to stay in the U.S. at a time when DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) is being threatened.  The song was produced by two-time Grammy winning producer Marc Swersky (Joe Cocker, Hillary Duff) and mixed by Mark Needham (Imagine Dragons, Fleetwood Mac).  Please share her story.

Our final single today comes to us from Amsterdam and features Belle and the Beats with their single, “Soldier of the Night.”

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Last week we had the pleasure of reviewing Floods.  They have now released a music video for their first single, “Heavy Hearts.”  We hope you dig it as much as we do.

Our second new video features acclaimed actor Danny Trejo in the latest video from The Zephyr Bones.  Check out “The Arrow of our Youth.”

Our third video is from Blue Élan Records’ latest revival artist, Fanny Walked the Earth.  We simply love this video for the amazing single, “Lured Away.”  Don’t forget to check out their review as well.

Our final video this week is from Little Stranger for their single, “Sing it High.”  this should get your week off to a great start.

Get it or forget it – Ghost Town Blues Band, Milo Gore, Tennessee Jed, Fanny Walked the Earth, Barrence Whitfield and the Savages

Happy Friday – we made it through another week.  Here in Missoula, it’s First Friday, a night when local businesses present displays of local artists and photographers, coupled with beer, wine and live music.  We’re having an art exhibit by our manager, Tanner Court, at the VFW, with music by another employee, Doug Barrett.  Should be lots of fun.  To warm things up, here are five more reviews for your enjoyment.

Artist NameGhost Town Blues Band

Album NameBackstage Pass

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Blues/Funk/Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Come Together; 2.  Tip of my Hat; 3.  Shine; 4.  Giving it all Away; 5.  Big Shirley; 6.  Whipping Post; 7.  I get High; 8.  One More Whiskey; 9.  I Need More Love

Publicist:  Frank Roszak Promotions

Review:  Memphis-based Ghost Town Blues Band does more than just play the blues, combining their music with a healthy mix of funk and rock to form their own unique style.  That style is manifest in their cover of the Beatles’ “Come Together,” which segues into a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”  Their original numbers are progressive, upbeat and fun, creating an atmosphere conducive to just cutting loose and having a good time.  They are like the Doobie Brothers with the Tower of Power horns.  The entire album is a collection of live covers and fan favorites, and make us want to get to Memphis and see their live show.  In the meantime, at least we’ll have this album to tide us over until we do.

Recommendation:  If you love blues, funk or rock, and want that live experience, then you simply must Get this one.

Artist NameMilo Gore

Album NameToo Much Too Soon

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Alt Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Towel on the Floor; 2.  State

Publicist:  Rollon Entertainment

Review:  The latest from five-piece British alternative rockers is a short two-song EP, and those songs could not be more different.  The first tract, “Towel on the Floor,”  is lo-fi and was recorded in a home studio, while the second, “State,” co-written with electronica artist Jay Beale, is much more upbeat, with interesting vocal harmonies, a steady and driving beat plus an electronic edge to the song.  It would do well on American radio.  We really love “State,” and would love to hear more of that type of song from this band.  We look forward to what they have in store for us.

Recommendation:  As they so eloquently sing in their second song, “They keep me running.”  Run out and Get it.

Artist NameTennessee Jed

Album NamePimpgrass

Label:  Sam & Molly Music

Genre:  Americana/funk/soul/bluegrass

Track Listing:  1.  Over the Mountain; 2.  Shout; 3.  Can’t get There From Here; 4.  Sweet Relief; 5.  Cells; 6.  Opie’s Intermezzo; 7.  Sunup ’til Sundown; 8.  Country Pimpgrass; 9.  Kiss; 10.  The Train for to Carry me Home

Publicist:  Golden Relations

Review:  Tennessee Jed calls his music “Pimgrass” aka “Bluegrass with Bling” because it is a mixture of Americana, funk and soul fused with traditional bluegrass and country music.  He works with an all-star band, including Scott Vestal and Todd Parks (Sam Bush Band), Luke Bulla (Lyle Lovett, Lee Ann Womack and Ricky Scaggs), Josh Shilling (Mountain Heart), Andy Hall (Infamous Stringdusters), Patrick McAvinue and Bob Mummer (Dailey & Vincent) as well as Aaron McCune (Oak Ridge Boys, Dailey & Vincent), on this amazing release, which only makes his unique sound that much more appealing.  From the amazing original, “Over the Mountain,” with McCune providing the bass backing vocals, to the stirring and reimagined covers of “Shout” and “Kiss,” Jed shows us an entirely new side of bluegrass and Americana.  We love the smooth and soothing sound of “Can’t get There from Here” and “Cells,”  the humor of “Sweet Relief,” the Celtic feel of “Opie’s Intermezzo,” the straight Americana feel of “Sunup ’til Sundown” (which could have been lifted from O Brother Where art Thou and “Country Pimpgrass,”

Recommendation:  Run, don’t walk and Get this one today!

Artist NameFanny Walked the Earth

Album NameFanny Walked the Earth

Label:  Blue Élan Records

Genre:  Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Lured Away; 2.  When we Need Her; 3.  Walk the Earth; 4. Girls on the Road; 5.  One; 6.  It Happened Here; 7.  Not my Monkey; 8.  Cool Girl; 9.  What are you Waiting For; 10.  Storm-crossed; 11.  Love Farmers

Publicist:   Jensen Publicity

Review:  Back in the 60’s, three teenagers, June Millington, Brie Darling and Jean Adamian, formed a band named Fanny, and proceeded to rewrite rock and roll history by becoming the first all girl band to be signed to a major label.  Jump ahead 38 years, and Kirk Pasich and the folks at Blue Élan Records convinced them to get back together as Fanny Walked the Earth.  The ladies sound like they never stopped playing, and hit the ground running on the first track, “Lured Away,” which definitely belongs on Top 40 radio.  The awesomeness continues with the next track, “When we Need Her,” and continues throughout the entire album.   They pay homage to their past on “Girls on the Road” (reminiscent of Wynonna’s hit, “Girls With Guitars”), rock out on “Walk the Earth,” “One” and “What are you Waiting For,” and speak their mind on so-called “friends” and human behavior on “It Happened Here” and “Not my Monkey.”  “Cool Girl” is a mellow and smooth pop song that is also very radio friendly, while “Storm-crossed” is another rocker.  They close out the album with “Love Farmers,” a thought-provoking ballad that leaves us wanting more.  Hopefully we won’t have to wait another 38 years for the next one.

Recommendation:  Easily one of the best albums of 2018, this one is a must-have for your musical collection.  Get it now!

Artist NameBarrence Whitfield & the Savages

Album NameSoul Flowers of Titan

Label:  Bloodshot Records

Genre:  Rockabilly/Blues/Soul/R&B

Track Listing:  1.  Slowly Losing my Mind; 2.  Pain; 3.  Tall, Black and Bitter; 4.  Tingling; 5.  Sunshine Don’t Make the Sun; 6.  I’ll be Home Someday; 7.  Let’s go to Mars; 8.  Adorable; 9.  I Can’t get no Ride; 10.  I’m Gonna Leave You; 11.  Edie Please; 12.  Say What you Want

Publicist:  Bloodshot Records

Review:  Barrence Whitfield @ the Savages waste no time on their latest project, rocking our blues with the first track, “Slowly Losing my Mind,” and continuing this throbbing sound through the final track, “Way What you Want.”  Our favorites include “Slowly Losing my Mind,” “Tall, Black and Bitter,” “Tingling,” “I’ll be Home Someday,” “Let’s go to Mars,” “Adorable,” “I Can’t get no Ride,” “I’m Gonna Leave You,” and “Edie Please.”

Recommendation:  This one is a must for every serious audiophile, whether you are a fan of the blues, rock, soul or R&B.  We strongly recommend that you Get it.
