Monday mashup 2020 (vol 13)

Had to work 10 hours yesterday but I’m off this morning.  Happy to share some great new songs with you and encourage you to continue to support indie musicians.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week is from the forthcoming album Born Free by Soul Asylum on Blue Élan Records.  We have always loved this band and their newest is easily becoming one of our favorites.  Check out this acoustic version of “If I Told You.”

Next up is another artist from Blue Élan, the legendary Rusty Young of Poco, who is joined by Suzanna Spring of Mustangs of the West (still another Blue Élan artist) on this amazing Americana track, “Waiting on You.”  It doesn’t get much better than this.

Next up is another Blue Élan artist, the up and coming star named Car Astor.  Her latest is a stirring cover of the classic Nilsson song, “Without You.”  This one is going to be legendary.

Our fourth single comes from an artist that goes by the name Hey Bertha.  Her debut single is called “Your Name,” and we believe that she could easily become a household name.  Check out this amazing song.

Our final single this week is from one of the founding members of The Romantics, Mike Skill.  He wrote their mega hit, “What I Like About You.”  His solo work is just as impressive as he teaches us about the “’67 Riot.”  Rock on!

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

First up this week is another hilarious video from the Blue Élan Records’ Queen of Comedy, Scout Durwood.  She gives us a fun little ditty with “Sad Ukelele.”  Enjoy this break from the seriousness of COVID-19.

Next up is a live performance video of “Lily White” from the upcoming album The Peppermint Sessions by Red Wanting Blue, our final Blue Élan artist today.

Our third music video is the latest lyric video from Life.Church Worship of their new song, “When I Say Jesus.”  Let the words of the song heal all your broken parts.

We were proud to feature Dauzat St. Marie last week, and they’re back with a lyric video this week, “Falling Again.”  The vocals remind us of Jennifer Nettles, and we love that Heather is back at full  vocal force.  Enjoy this one.

We close out this week with the latest from Emily Breeze.  She gives thoughtful advice to the younger generation in her heart-felt although slightly wacky rock and roll tribute song, “Hey Kidz.”

Monday mashup 2019: vol. 31

Just when we thought things were started to stabilize, the universe laughed at us.  We spent all of last Tuesday moving into our new apartment, but couldn’t get the internet up or finish moving in until late Wednesday.  I’m currently working two part-time jobs, while Chelle just got promoted to shift manager.  I work Tuesdays from 10-4, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 to 9:30, and Sundays from 9:45 to 6:30, with Monday my only day off.  Chelle’s schedule is even crazier and she is working 50-60 hours a week, so we were looking forward to having a relaxing day off today, only to wake up this morning to find that our electricity had been disconnected due to a miscommunication about a deposit.  That forced us to head back over to my brother’s house, where I’m currently sitting and working off the lap top to write today’s column.  No promises but I do hope to also complete the Andy Grammer review today.  In the meantime, here are some new singles and videos on this final Monday in October.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week is a hip-hop song about making the best out of the bad times (so appropriate for us right now).  “Another Day in the Life” is from Tha Third i, and we highly recommend you listen to the words.

Next is a beautiful song from Emmrose that is ethereal and eerie but somewhat comforting.  We love the sound of her vocals and the words cut deep.  Give a listen to “Tonight” and let us know what you think.

Our third single is actually a pair and comes from New Zealand transplant and current LA singer-songwriter Eden Iris.  The current single is called “Birthday Baby” and comes with its B side, “Lullaby.”  Her vocals remind us of early Gwen Stefani.  Check them out and feel the Kiwi love.

Single number four is the perfect song for this time of year, although it is actually about abandonment.  We think this song belongs on Top 40 radio, and love the sound of Carvi‘s “Ghosted.”

Our final single this week is from the classic rock sound of Koala Queen.  We definitely agree it’s about “Time” for this band to break out.

MUSIC VIDEOS

We continue in the rocking vein for the latest video from British punk rockers The Kut.  Although the single will not be “officially” released until Halloween, here is the video for “X-ray Eyes.”  We truly dig it.

Next up is a modern-day band that borrows heavily from the 80s groove on their latest, “What About Tonight.”  We think this band deserves national attention and heavy rotation on American radio, as they are busting out in Europe already.  Check out Papyllon.

We think we found our new favorite artist in Rachel Lorin.  Not only is she incredibly beautiful, but she has powerful vocals like early Kelly Clarkson, and a music video that is one of the hottest we have seen.  This one will make you sweat and is perfect for your next workout routine.  Go for the “Gold.”

Video number four has equally powerful vocals from Iris and a visually stimulating video for her song, “Stars.”  All of this great music is making today so much better.

We close out this week with the stunning video for “Heaven’s Gate,” the single version of which we shared with you a couple of weeks ago.  Just in time for Halloween, “drink the Kool Aid” and give another listen to Emily Breeze and watch as the song literally comes to life.

Monday mashup 2019: vol. 29

Happy Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day!  It’s time for our weekly Monday Mashup and we have some great ones for you today.  Check out these amazing indie tunes.

THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF HEATHER JACKS

Heather Jacks is one of the coolest indie artists I know.  Although she is not a musician, she is an amazing creative artist, photographer, author and supporter of indie music.  She recently invested in “Bubba the Bus,” and is in the process of converting it to her mobile “tiny home.”  Keep up with her adventures by subscribing to her YouTube channel.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week is the radio edit of “Heaven’s Gate” from Emily Breeze, who we introduced to you back in August.  Her latest is further proof that this is an artist worth investing in.

Our next single is from another band we previously featured here on Indie Voice Blog back in 2017 (Monday Mashup) and 2018 (Get it or Forget it), The Crowleys.  Here’s their latest offering, “Clarice.”  We’re glad to have you back.

Single number three comes from another IVB favorite artist with an eerie, transcending vibe named Völuspa.  This one is intriguing and haunting and entitled “Live One Life.”

Our next single features the insane harmonies of Transatlantic trio, Raynes on their latest single, “Lemon Drop.”  This one is a potential monster  hit and deserves heavy rotation on American radio.

Our final single this week is the first release from Swiss band Marey.  We love their sound and can’t wait to hear what comes next.  Here’s “Synthetic.”

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

First up is a quirky lyric video for “High Functioning,” the latest from the amazing Alannah Kavanagh aka Grizzly Coast.  This one will get you going like nothing else.

If you love magic and Americana music, then you will love “In My Time” from Fletcher C Johnson.  This one is just plain fun.

Video number three is a powerful video about human rights from The Oddysy, and features Public Enemy‘s Chuck D on the song “Bang Bang.”  The images are visceral and the message is sorely needed today.

Next up is one of the best videos we have ever seen from Tiffany Young, and she’s provided some great ones.  This one has almost 1 million views, and it was only released on October 10.  It’s called “Run for Your Life,” and we recommend you run to watch it.

Our final video this week comes from multi-LA Music Critic Award winning duo, Lovers & Poets.  We think it just may be their most powerful one yet, and we are ready to head off on a “Sugar High.”

Monday mashup 2019: vol 22

There are very few challenges that I have been unable to meet in my life, but trying to become a shift manager at Pizza Hut is on that list.  As a result, I am actively pursuing other employment and have an interview tomorrow for another customer service job.  I apologize for my lack of attention to this blog, but it has been hard to concentrate on music when I was fighting such an uphill battle.  Thankfully, that battle is over, and we’re back to start a new week with the latest Monday Mashup.

On the LA Music Critic Awards front, we have not been getting the number of views that the nominations normally bring and as a result there has only been one artist nominated for Fan Favorite so far.  We strongly encourage the nominated artists to rally their fans in this regard.  Your fans still have until August 28 to vote.

We are redefining our scope of reviews, and plan to follow this format in the future.  Mondays (Monday Mashup) will feature singles and videos, and recent artist news and updates.  Tuesdays and Thursdays (Tuesday/Thursday Treats) will feature reviews of artists we are familiar with and have previously reviewed.  Wednesdays (Unknown Wednesdays) will feature new artists who have not been previously reviewed by this blog.  Fridays (New Music Friday) will feature reviews of releases scheduled for that day.  We hope that you enjoy our new focus.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week is from a new artist who came to our attention courtesy of The Village Idiots.  Her name is Allanah Jeffreys and we think that she has an amazing future, if her latest song “Loyalty” is any indication.  Enjoy this piece of amazing artistry.

Next up is the intriguing sound of Teach me Human, who sound similar to Crash Test Dummies.  We really love the sound of their latest single, “Lonely Night,” and think it just might be the breakout hit they need.

Our third single is the latest jazz masterpiece from Lady Antebellum guitarist (and LA Music Critic Award winner) Slim Gambill.  Here he teams up with Jeff Coffin for the masterful “54321.”  This one deserves a Grammy!

Next up is a smooth synth-pop/rock artist by the name of Emily Breeze, and we really are digging on her sound.  Check out “Work” and see if it doesn’t brighten your day.

Our final single this week is from Axel Mansoor, and this incredibly sweet groove should get your week off to a great start to “Paradise.”

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

First up this week is a video with breathtaking cinematography from Soaware.  Check out the rocking sound of “Voltures.”  We last featured them back in April, and their rocking has only improved.

If you love blues rock then you will love the latest from Dudley Taft, “Give me a Song.”  We think this one will power your week.

Our third video will remind you of the powerful vocals of Adele, but this artist may make you forget all about her.  She is a powerful force who we think will be on the music scene for a long time.  Check out “99” from Harlea.

Next up is the synth-heavy sound of Holliday Howe, who’d “Rather Forget.”  We think everyone can identify with the sentiments expressed in her video, and think she has a definite future in indie music.

We close out this edition of Monday Mashup with the latest R&B goodness from Bassette, as she shows us that “She Bad.”  Get your groove on and enjoy this new week.
