Monday mashup 2019: vol. 36

Hard to believe that December has arrived and 2019 is coming to a close.  In the weeks ahead we will be releasing our lists of the best singles, videos and albums of the year, as well as sharing some new holiday classics.  But before we do that, here’s our first Monday Mashup of the month.

In the “It’s About Time” category, the California Country Show Radio Podcast has announced that it will begin a series entitled “Trailblazers – Women in Country Music.”   The podcast will feature in-depth interviews with the women who set the stage for the future of country music, and we for one can’t wait to check it out.  Here’s the schedule:

NEW SINGLES

Our first single comes from Julia Jonas, who we think has the potential to truly clear the “Air.”  We are in love with her amazing voice and the words of the song are so uplifting.

Our next single is a true rocker from Nuns of the Tundra.  Check out “Sign in Blood.”

We introduced you to Australia’s The Skelton Collective last January, and they’re back with a new single, “Coffee & Hope.”  We are glad to hear more from this amazing group.  Put this one on repeat.

Our fourth single comes from Lostboycrow, and is full of retro influences.  Check out “Moonlight,” and get up and dance.

Our final single this week is from Unbroken Expanse and simply titled “Go.”  We highly recommend you enjoy this one and add them to your list of future superstars.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Our first music video this month is from the brilliant band Papyllon, who we recently introduced to you.  Here is the lyric video for their latest, “All the Time,” and we can see this song becoming a huge hit.

Next up is an interesting video from California’s Dankrupt, who seem to be “Drowning” in great musical ideas.  We love their sound and think  you will too.

Need an escape this holiday season from all the stress of shopping?  We highly recommend you put on the latest video from Eric Tingstad and find your “Solace.”

Next up is a very special video of the song Erick Macek wrote for his wife for their wedding day.  Check out the simple beauty of “Your Hand.”  See if it doesn’t spark you to be more romantic.

We close out the week with this beautiful original Christmas song by Christian artist Plumb.  She tells us “It’s Christmastime.”  Enjoy the season.

Forty best albums of 2018

What a year for indie music.  We received a boatload of review requests from around the world, and published reviews of nearly 1,000 CDs and EPs.  We culled through those we reviewed first to pick our nominations for the LA Music Critic Awards, and now to compile our list of the 40 Best CDs of 2018.

Due to the sheer volume, we only considered full-length projects for this list, but that doesn’t mean that quite a few of the EPs we reviewed weren’t also worthy of distinction.  We may yet put together another list of just EPs.

In the meantime, while we wait for the winners of the second half of 2018 for the LA Music Critic Awards to be announced tomorrow, here are our favorite CDs of 2018.  You can find their individual reviews by searching for them on our blog.

Monday mashup 2018: vol. 44

Happy December!  It was a good weekend for our favorite teams, as Miami knocked off their divisional rivals the Bills, and our Lady Griz won the annual Lady Griz Classic with a come-from-behind victory over UC Davis.  This is going to be a busy week with 10 albums to review, Ten Amazing Videos and Ten Great Singles for November and the announcement of the nominations for the LA Music Critic Awards for the second half of 2018.  Let’s get started.

BLUE ÉLAN RECORDS SUPPORTS ALLIANCE FOR CHILDREN’S RIGHTS

Once again Blue Élan Records is supporting the Alliance for Children’s Rights with the release of their annual Christmas collection.  This year’s offering includes last year’s LA Music Critic Award winning song, “Shine Down on Us,” as well as the latest from The Mustangs of the West, “Everybody Wants Peace on Earth.”  Please support this worthy cause by  streaming it on Spotify or purchase it online

REBELLE ROAD RECORDS TO RELEASE NEW ALICE WALLACE ALBUM

With the demise of California Country Records, a new player has stepped in to continue their legacy.  Rebelle Road Records will release the new Alice Wallace album, Into the Blue, in early January 2019.  Pre-sale has begun, and you can get a sneak peak of the title track, courtesy of The Bluegrass Situation.  This one is gonna be amazing.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week is an amazing collaboration between Cheat Codes and Kim Petras.  We love the smooth sound of this truly radio friendly track, “Feeling of Falling,” and think you will love it too.  Enjoy this great start to your week.

Our second single is a special Christmas tune from the amazing Tiffany Young.  We love the smooth soul/R&B sound and think you will love “Peppermint” as much as we do.

Single number three proves disco is not dead, at least not in Amsterdam.  Here’s the latest from Sweetwood, the latest project from collective Voice Calling Radio.  Here’s “One of These Days.”

Next up is the second single from the forthcoming album by TNEO (The New Electronic Orchestra).  Here’s “Look Into the Light.”  We think this one will get you on your feet.  It has a great acoustic guitar, amazing vocals and a steady beat perfect for dancing.

Our final single today is one of the songs from A Blue Élan Christmas, written by multiple Grammy winning artist Jack Tempchin, and featuring Rusty Young of Poco and Jesse Dayton, two of his Blue Élan labelmates.  Check out “Jesus and Mohammed.”

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Keeping the Christmas spirit going is the video for the amazing tune, “Everybody Wants Peace on Earth” from the newly resurrected Mustangs of the West.  We think you will love the down-home feel of this video, written by lead singer Suzanna Spring.  Happy holidays!

Our next video is a beautiful collection of scenes from Nashville, along with an amazing instrumental cover of the traditional Christmas hymn, “Joy to the World.”  Let the beauty of this song warm your house during your holiday parties.  Thanks Eric Tingstad for this amazing rendition.

Here’s a rare treat, a video of the first live performance of the song “Breaking Down” by Hamish Anderson.  It was filmed at The Belly Up, an indie music venue located in Solana Beach, California.  It should give you a rocking start to this Monday.

Next is a fun video of a great dance tune “Kickdrum Heartbeat” by Van Bobbi.  This one combines elements of R&B, pop, funk and Afro-beat, and “checks all the boxes” for a great song.  Please let us know what you think.

Our final video this week is from Peakes, who we have previously featured in this column.  We love the majestic sound and breathtaking and visually stimulating presentation of their song “Still Life.”

ReviewEddie’s Attic has always been a venue where indie artists love to perform.  It is easy to understand why as we listen to this amazing live album, recorded during her two shows which captures the vibe and feel of  that famous place.  Interspersed between their ten originals and one dynamic cover are some great moments of improv, storytelling and spontaneity.  Durrett and her band ROCK this joint with a mixture of R&B, soul, blues and gospel, creating a memorable performance that is now available for all to have, especially the horn-infused Top 10 tune “Butters in the Skillet.”  The message of the music is hope and perseverance, something our country desperately needs.  We think you will find what you’re looking for in this dynamic album, so keeping looking at the “Bright Side” and “Be Somebody’s Angel.”

Recommendation:  By all means, rush out and Get this one.

Review:  Eric Tingstad is another amazing artist we have met because of the Durango Songwriters Expo.  He is a Grammy-winning musician who has brought us albums in a myriad of genres, including New Age, Alt Country, Blues, Roots/Americana, Rock and Smooth Jazz.  On this album, he continues in the roots/Americana style with a healthy dose of blues guitar, perfectly demonstrated on the opening track, “Electric City.”  While there are some amazing vocals by Chloe Dolandis on “There’s More,” this album is primarily an instrumental one, displaying Tingstad’s amazing abilities for all to enjoy. His covers of traditional songs like “Oh’ Shenandoah,” “Amazing Grace,” “Big River,” and “Over the Rainbow” will amaze and impress, as will his original tunes, providing further proof of why he has become such a prolific and award-winning musician, composer and arranger.

Recommendation:  Definitely Get this one.

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  While most artists seem to drop a new album about every two years, indie artists are more prolific with their music.  Case in point is the Peter V Blues Train, which has just released their second album of 2018.  We reviewed their previous one back in March, and this one is no less amazing.  It raises the awesomeness factor another notch, especially those amazing vocals and guitar licks of Peter V and that incredible sax of Danny Walsh.  This time around the album includes nine originals and four covers, including Fats Domino‘s “Blue Monday,” Donnie Hathaway‘s “For All we Know,” and the blues standard “T Bone Shuffle.”   Add another diamond to the crown pf one of the best blues bands in the world.

Recommendation:  Peter V and his band deliver once again.  Run out and Get their latest offering.

Artist NameMichelle Lewis

Album NameAll That’s Left

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Pop

Track Listing:  1.  That’s What They Say; 2.  All That’s Left; 3.  Push On; 4.  Dancing in the Dark; 5.  How; 6.  In Love Again; 7.  Scars; 8.  You and Me; 9.  Please Don’t Go; 10.  Lay on my Pillow

Publicist:  Devious Planet

Review:  While much of today’s pop scene is pure escapism, the music of Michelle Lewis is more down-to-earth, keeping us grounded in reality but still providing a healthy dose of hope in overcoming adversity, especially in the area of finding true love and overcoming loss.  Although her third album continues to showcase her amazing songwriting chops, it also includes something she has not previously done before, a cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s amazing song “Dancing in the Dark.”  Among her originals, best tracks include “Push On,” “How,” the amazing duet “In Love Again,” “Scars,” and “Please Don’t Go.”  The theme of the album is best summarized in the words of “Push On” – “You’ve got to push on.”  Thank you Michelle for giving us hope that tomorrow can be brighter.    We love your spirit.

Recommendation:  Don’t even think about it – Rush out and Get this one today!

Track Listing:  1.  Come Together; 2.  Do it in the Road; 3.  Drive my Car; 4.  Money; 5.  Tax Man; 6.  While my Guitar Gently Weeps; 7.  She Came in Through the Bathroom Window; 8.  I Want You (She’s so Heavy); 9.  And I Love Her; 10.  Can’t Buy me Love; 11.  You Can’t do That; 12.  Yesterday; 13.  Get Back; 14.  With a Little Help From my Friends; 15.  Birthday; 16.  Blackbird; 17.  A Day in the Life

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  Believe it or not, The Beatles, like many of the other British Invasion bands, started out as a blues band, and this album reimagines 17 of their songs as if they had stayed that way.  Featuring the amazing guitar work of Gaetano “Tom” Letizia, these covers retain all the appeal of The Beatles’ originals while giving them new life as future blues standards.  It is only fitting that it took a band from the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to accomplish this feat.

Recommendation:  If you love The Beatles and blues, then this is the perfect combination of the two.  Get it.
