Monday mashup 2017: Vol. 28

Getting ready to head out on the road this week to check out some indie artists.  Will be leaving on Wednesday for Casper, Wyoming (anything we should see there that day), before heading down to Colorado Springs on Thursday to catch LA Music Critic Award winner Gina Sicilia at The Gold Room.  On Friday it will be back to Billings, Montana for the Magic City Blues Festival and a performance by Anni Piper.  Then on Saturday we’re off for Victor, Montana to catch Melissa Forrette.  Gonna be a busy week!

INDIE NEWS

Our dear friend and faithful indie supporter Heather Jacks has a couple of events coming up.  First up is the premiere of the Stilettos for Shanghai documentary For Chechyna on August 7 at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, which is a fundraiser for ORAM and Rainbow Railroad.  The second is the Project Nunway 8 Charity Fashion Drag Show on August 19 at SOMArts in San Francisco.  Please support these worthy events.

IPO (International Pop Overthrow) is coming back to Los Angeles.  Please support local indie artists like Patricia Bahia, who will be performing at Club Fais Do Do at 1:45 p.m. on August 4.

NEW MUSIC

CHVNGES is an amazing band with a new single, “Mischief Managed,” being released on Friday.  We love it and think you will too.  Check it out and let us know what you think.

Another band we covered last year, Junk Parlor, is releasing its single “Vultures and Weasels” on Sunday.  They have a very distinctive sound that we think you’ll like.

NEW  MUSIC VIDEOS

Our featured video this week comes from Denmark.  Straw is an amazingly talented family with a mom and two daughters who can truly sing.  This video rocks and we are proud to feature it today.  Expect great things from them as they expand their reach internationally.  We believe they would be an outstanding addition to the American music scene.  Special thanks to Doug Deutsch Publicity Services for sharing this treasure with us.

Los Angeles transplant Caitlin Eadie has recently released a new album, Balancing Act, as well as a music video for her current single “Wolf Cry.”  We think it is one of the best we’ve seen in a while, and think you’ll agree.

Last but not least this week is the new lyric video for “New Kids” by multiple LA Music Critic Award winner Jerad Finck.  He has been blowing up recently with both “New Kids” and “Criminal” charting nationally.  Enjoy this treasure.

Monday mashup 2017: Vol 27

Happy Monday as we enter the final full week of July 2017.  It’s been extremely busy in the indie world, so we’ve got a few things to share with you this week.  Please keep supporting indie music.

LA MUSIC CRITIC AWARDS

Speaking of which, tomorrow is your last chance to vote for the Fan Favorite for the first half of 2017.  Among the current leaders are FlecHaus, Polly O’Keary, Janey Street, Wendy Sweetlove and Dario.  To vote just click on this link, scroll to the bottom and add your comment.  The winners will be announced on Thursday, July 27.

LIVE PERFORMANCES

Last week was filled with great indie performances, as we travelled to Stevensville to see The American West and Maita, to Darby for Melissa Forrette and Mabel’s Rage, and to Spokane for Chris Chilton and Jerad Finck.  The American West review is up, and the rest will be published shortly.

This week Melissa is performing twice (The Ranch Club on Wednesday and at Highlander Brewery on Saturday, both in Missoula), while Shakewell will be performing at Missoula’s Downtown Tonight on Thursday.  The biggest event, though, will be Missoula’s annual Celtic Festival on Saturday in Caras Park, which will feature several indie acts including Spokane’s Broken Whistle, The Gothard Sisters, RUNA and headliner, Young Dubliners.

KELLY McGRATH

Kelly McGrath moved to Nashville about two years ago, and her music has taken off since.  Her last single, “You and Me Today,” debuted at #1 on CMT, and her next single,  “All That I Want,” looks to be even better.  Here’s a sneak peak of the new music video, debuting soon.

MUSIC VIDEOS

We’ve got a few great videos for you this week, and leading the pack is a past LA Music Critic Award winner, The Daybreaks.  It’s a highlight video from their recent CD Release Party in Nashville.  Check out our review of the album 🙂

Next up is one of our favorite artists on Blue Élan Records, and one of the hardest working Americana artists working today, Rod Melancon.  His past videos have been impressive, and his new one for “Dwayne and Me” will not disappoint.  Let us know what you think.

Last but not least this week is the latest from Amie Mirello, who has also found success after moving from Los Angeles to Nashville.  We are excited about this new direction for Mirello, and think you will be impressed as well.  Here’s her latest video for “Move Me.”

Monday mashup 2017: Vol 21

Back home in Montana after a wonderful week spending time with my dad and sister-in-law in Oklahoma.  I drove 3100 miles through Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma, and enjoyed the trip.  Also got to stop in Denver and catch a performance of one of my best friends, Nina Storey, at The Soiled Dove Underground.

Speaking of the show, her opening act, Ian Mahan, was amazing.  The night was sheer perfection.  Loved the entire vibe of new songs, old songs, Beatles songs and the wit and wisdom of her brilliant on stage banter.  We have been friends for many years (won’t tell you how many but it’s more than 10), and this was the best show I have ever witnessed.  Be on the lookout for new material, as well as a new project that she shared with us.  If you loved her before, you will love her even more now.  If you haven’t discovered the magic that is Nina Storey, then now is the perfect time to come onboard.

It would be “Criminal” not to check out indie artist Jerad Finck

Indie rock has a new champion to join the ranks of such artists as Lifehouse and Blue October.  Please give a rousing welcome to Jerad Finck, who is set to release his new EP Criminal this month.
Criminal is an audiophile’s dream, with rich melodies, lyrics to sink your teeth into and an unmistakable vocal track that sets Finck apart from his contemporaries and propels him into the elite of indie musicians.  Every song on this EP is single-worthy and ready for radio exposure.
The title track, scheduled to be the first single, is a good place to start, setting the tempo for what is surely one of the best EPs to be released in 2015.
One thing that comes through loud and clear is Finck’s positivity.  His songs are upbeat, with lyrical content that uplifts the listener and are the perfect remedy to life’s uncertainties.  Even the song titles are uplifting, as Finck brings us to “The Good Life” where you can be “Fire Proof” as long as you “Take me With You.”
One of the first to recognize Finck’s potential is Milk & Honey, an elite management company whose clients have already amassed an impressive array of BMI and ASCAP pop awards, Grammys, Junos, Golden Globes, Arias and Mercurys. while their art and music have impacted the furthest corners of the globe and collectively sold more than 400 million units.   Milk & Honey is based in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles and works closely with the major ad agencies, television networks, film studios, and music supervision houses to place music with visual media.  Milk & Honey is run by Lucas Keller, who founded the firm in 2014 after spending four years with another boutique firm, The Collective.  Finck is also endorsed by Gibson Guitars.
Ciminal is produced by David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Christina Perri), Steven Miller (Pink, Dave Matthews Band, Switchfoot) and Nathan Meckel, and is the perfect follow-up to Finck’s previous self-titled debut from 2011.  That debut gave us the song “Runaway,” which became one of the most successful independent songs of 2011 and truly launched Finck’s career.  As a result of that EP, produced by John Seymour, Spokane-based Finck began performing practically non-stop, opening for and/or touring with Daughtry, Christina Perri, Edwin McCain, DADA, Vertical Horizon, Parachute, One EskimO, Ingrid Michaelson, Matt Hires, Red Wanting Blue, Ron Pope, Cracker, Ingram Hill, Tony Lucca and many others.   According to Finck, “Touring with Sister Hazel, a highly fan-interactive band, helped me develop a deeper, more intimate relationship with my own audiences, both onstage and off..”
Among the highlights of Finck’s tour schedule have been performances at Live In The Vineyard, Hotel Carolina, SXSW, Indie Week Toronto, The Rock Boat XII, and Balcony TV.  Finck has also been featured in more than 50 newspapers and magazines; including CMJ, Skope, American Songwriter, Amplifier and Acoustic Magazine, while he and his band have performed on dozens of morning TV shows on NBC, CBS, ABC & FOX.  Finck’s songs have been featured in films and TV shows on HBO, ESPN, Discovery, CBS & NBC, among others.
At one point in 2011, “Runaway” was the #1 independent song in the country, peaking at #3 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, #42 in Hot AC and #25 on the Hot AC Indicator Chart.  It also inspired popular remixes by Ajax and DJ Lynnwod (that appeared on later editions of Jerad’s Anthony Resta-produced EP Stuck In Your Riddle).  The song was used by the NBA and the NHL as the backdrop to videos created for each league’s finals that celebrated wins by the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Bruins.

For more info on this amazing artist, check out his Facebook page, follow him on Twitter, and subscribe to his YouTube channel.

Special thanks to Jen Lyneis of Ue3 Promotions for the background material.
