Monday mashup 2018: vol. 31

It’s our final Monday Mashup for the month of August, and we’ve got plenty of news and great new singles and music videos.  Last night we worked the Shakey Graves concert at Big Sky Brewing Company, and it was an amazingly chill evening.  The music was incredible, and the performers were very good and fun to hang with.  Thanks so much to Rayland Baxter and Shakey Graves for being incredible and easy to talk to.  Watch for our review shortly.

SONIA RAO GIVES INSPIRING TEDx TALK

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week is from one of our favorite Santa Monica bands, Only Bricks.  Their latest is called “Ordinary,” and we believe the band is anything but.  Check them out and let us know what you think.

Next is the latest from Blue Élan Records artist Amy Wilcox.  Her single is called “Somebody,” and is the second single from her forthcoming EP West.  We can’t wait to hear the rest.

Our third single this week is “Dancing” from Basement Revolver, Ontario, Canada, and we really like this gritty indie rock track.

Our fourth single this week is from Amy Stroup, who was born in Boston and raised in Abilene, Texas.  It’s called “Wild Nights,” and we love it.  What do you think?

Our final single this week is from the amazing R&B/alt pop voice of Thomas Graff.  It’s called “Make it Easy,” and we think that it accurately describes this artist’s future in the business.  Enjoy the groove.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Long time indie giant Greg Laswell is finally releasing a new album on September 21.  The first single from it is called “Royal Empress,” and it was debuted by Los Angeles tastemaker Nic Harcourt  (KCRW) on August 14.  Here’s the lyric video for the song, which we simply love since it reminds us of vintage Springsteen.

Next up is the latest from Satellite Citi, which we introduced to you last year.  The song is entitled “Collide” and that’s what is going to happen soon when the world finds out about this amazing rock band with a lead singer that not only plays drums, but can also compete with Amy Lee.  Enjoy this one!

Our third video this week is from Tim Burlingame and Kathrin Shorr, also known as Sweet Talk Radio.  We really love this beautiful video for “Blue,” and think you will too.

Our next video is “Running” from Daniel Ellsworth and The Great Lakes.  This one has such a chill vibe that we think it is perfect for your Monday.

Time for our final video this week.  We’re closing out without another chill tune from Falcon Jane.  Here’s “Ginger Ale.”  Are you thirsty yet?

Artists Worth Checking Out Get it or Forget it Reviews Women in Entertainment

Get it or forget it – Bush Tetras, Kathy and the Kilowatts, Added Color, A Big Yes and a small no, Only Bricks

TGIF and happy 4-20.  Time to relax from this crazy week and get ready for the weekend.  Here are five more great artists to check out and hopefully find what you need.

Artist NameBush Tetras

Album NameTake the Fall

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Post-punk

Track Listing:  1.  True Blue; 2.  Red Heavy; 3.  Mouse; 4.  Don’t Stop It; 5.  Out Again

Publicist:  Promo Juke Box

Review:  Bush Tetras have been a fixture in the underground music scene in New York City since the 80’s, and with their latest EP, prove that they are still as relevant as ever.  Lead vocalist and co-founder Cynthia Sley does just that with her amazing voice, which sits perfectly on the powerful slide guitar and the enormous beat of the drums.  Punk lovers everywhere are going to want this exciting piece of music in their personal libraries, as the band proves that they truly know how to rock it, punk style.  Every song is powerful, but our nod goes to the title track, “Red Heavy,” and “Don’t Stop it” as the best on the EP.

Recommendation:  Punk and rock lovers will find it a necessity to Get this one.

Artist NameKathy & the Kilowatts

Album NamePremonition of Love

Label:  Nola Blue Records

Genre:  Blues

Track Listing:  1.  First do no Harm; 2.  Premonition of Love; 3.  Beggars Can’t be Choosers; 4.  Always Fooling Me; 5.  Grow Some; 6.  Black Nights; 7.  What Have I Done Wrong; 8.  Final Verdict; 9.  Sugar Bee; 10.  Answer Yes; 11.  All These Questions; 12.  I Got This; 13.  The Bigger Picture

Publicist:  Blind Raccoon

Review:  In the light of the #MeToo movement, there has been an increase in the creation of music that empowers women.  To our knowledge, though, this is the first time we have heard that type of music within the blues community.  Kathy Murray has overcome a childhood of abuse and bullying to become a powerful blues singer, and has created a masterpiece of empowerment to share her status as an overcomer.  Her musical style, which was born during Austin’s  blues boom, incorporates the best of the Texas blues with just enough traditional and contemporary blues to highlight her uniqueness.  From the first notes of “First do no Harm” to the final downbeat of “The Bigger Picture,” Murray and the Kilowatts  bring us upbeat songs that strive to bring victory to a battle that has been ranging for far too long.  These are songs that are meant for a worldwide audience, and deserve industry attention, both for radio airplay, and placement in television and film.  Not only is the guitar work dominant in these songs, but the horns, and Murray’s voice, lift these tunes to a new dimension, setting the bar to a very high level indeed.

Recommendation:  Don’t wait another moment – Get this one now and put it on repeat.  You’ll feel better just by listening.

Artist NameAdded Color

Album NameMr. Industry

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Alt Rock

Track Listing:  1.  Panic Attack; 2.  Mr. Industry; 3.  Just Because; 4.  Same Place; 5.  Out of Control

Publicist:  Behind the Curtains Media

Review:Brazilian/American power rock band Added Color is taking New York City and Brooklyn by storm as their funk-infused brand of alternative rock takes over North America.  They rock like there’s no tomorrow, with well-crafted lyrics and music and vocals that deliver every word in such a way that you will never forget the message, especially the hard-hitting diatribe against the music industry contained in the title track.  Their first single, “Same Place,” has already spawned a stellar YouTube video, while “Just Because” is fast becoming their most popular stream.  If the time has come to crown a new king of rock and roll, then Added Color has our vote.

Recommendation:  If you love rock, then this one is a no-brainer.  You simply must Get it today.

Artist NameA Big Yes and a small no

Album NameMise En Abyme

Label:  Royal Potato Family

Genre:  Indie Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Mise en Abyme; 2.  Don’t Pull it Out; 3.  Stranger Things; 4.  Amazing Grace; 5.  Enough is Enough; 6.  I’m Gonna Die; 7.  We Talk too Much; 8.  Photo Finish; 9.  Heather

Publicist:  The Syndicate

Review:  Whether you call it shoegaze, indie pop, or just plain different, the music of Kevin Kendrick aka A Big Yes and a small no is unlike anything you may have heard from now.  It might be his background, which includes surviving a kidnapping and numerous muggings, his victory over heroin or his insanely talented and creative brain that have resulted in music that defies categorization into any one genre.  The album starts out with some amazing acoustic guitar underscoring soaring vocals on the title track, and then proceeds to go higher on each track that follows, like the keys and electric guitar on “Don’t Pull it Out,” or the stirring truth of his biographical song, “Stranger Things.” with some amazing organ and trumpet.  We also love his stirring cover of the classic hymn “Amazing Grace.”  Regardless of your style of music, you will find something to love on this album.

Recommendation:  This one is a superb effort and belongs in your library.  We highly recommend you Get it.

Artist NameOnly Bricks

Album Name:  Foundation

Label:  Self-released

Genre:  Indie Pop

Track Listing:  1.  Twisted; 2.  (Your Love Gets Me) High; 3.  Helpless; 4.  Hello Goodbye; 5.  Afterthought; 6.  California; 7.  Get on the Floor

Publicist:  Far Digital PR

Review:  Los Angeles has spawned a number of great pop bands, and Only Bricks is the next in line.  The sweet vocals of Anne DiGiovanni, combined with the musical genius of her husband, Joseph Lewczak, create music that is a sheer joy to behold, and makes you want to get up and boogie.  We were hooked from the first notes of “Twisted,” a song which could be a mega hit on Top 40 radio.  Their tongue-in-cheek anti-drug tune “(Your Love Gets Me) High” is the perfect theme song for the movement, and could definitely get us high from the sheer sweetness of the song.  “Hello Goodbye” is our new jam, and we seriously love this song.  There is not a bad song on the EP.  We only wish we could be at The Peppermint Club in Los Angeles tomorrow night (April 21) for the EP release show.  If you live in the area, we STRONGLY urge you to get out there and support this amazing duo.

Recommendation:  Sorry Katie, it looks like your reign as the Queen of Indie Pop has hit a snag – Anne DiGiovanni and Only Bricks have staged a coup and taken over your throne.  This guys are unbelievable – Get Foundation today!!!
