Monday mashup 2021 (vol 16)

Welcome to our final Monday Mashup from Oklahoma because . . . (drumroll please!) . . . we’re moving to North Carolina!  My wife and I have purchased a beautiful home built in 1900 in the sleepy little town of Scotland Neck, North Carolina and are in the process of moving there.  We hope to be back up and running by the first of June.  In the meantime, enjoy these great new singles and music videos.

NEW SINGLES

First up is the latest from a group we discovered at a show in Spokane a few years ago.  Hailing from Portland, the BGP are fun pop that is uplifting and will definitely put a smile on your face.  Check out “20 Ways.”

The pandemic has brought out some of t he best from indie artists and this next single is living proof.  Check out this collaboration from Lucy Schwartz, MILCK and KPH & the Canary Collective.  They want us to know that despite the restrictions placed on us because of COVID, we are “Not Alone.”

Our third single is from the effervescent Sonia Rao, who has not graced our pages in far too long  We have always loved her music, and this song was recently selected by the City of Los Angeles as one of the best.  We wholeheartedly agree.  Check out “Louder.”

Powerful women have always had a place in country music, and a new voice has appeared on the horizon.  We are proud to present the debut single from Allison Cipris, and we could not agree more – “She’s a Queen.”

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Cindy Alexander is back with another stellar video for the never ending amazing collection of songs on her latest, While the Angels Sigh.  We are humbled that this truly gifted talent continues to provide some of the best music and videos in the indie world today.  Here’s “Walking Constellation.”

Another Blue Élan Records artist is also back with a new video and it is beautiful in its simplicity.  We love the toy piano and the sentiments expressed by Chelsea Williams with her song “High Speed Chase.”

Switching gears to the high energy rock of the band ROCKET, we are proud to present their latest offering.  Filmed during a sold-out show at LA’s El Rey theater, this band shows not signs of “Fading Out.”

Our fourth video comes from one of LA’s resident guitar bad asses, none other than Ali Handal.  Her latest visual and sonic treat is a lyric video for her song, “Pour me Another.”  All we can say is “Yes, please.”

We close out our videos with another lyric video, his time from our Nashville friends, Crimson Calamity.  Let their vocal harmonies roll over you as they bring us this ode to “My Best Friends.”

Monday mashup 2018: vol. 31

It’s our final Monday Mashup for the month of August, and we’ve got plenty of news and great new singles and music videos.  Last night we worked the Shakey Graves concert at Big Sky Brewing Company, and it was an amazingly chill evening.  The music was incredible, and the performers were very good and fun to hang with.  Thanks so much to Rayland Baxter and Shakey Graves for being incredible and easy to talk to.  Watch for our review shortly.

NEW SINGLES

Our first single this week is from one of our favorite Santa Monica bands, Only Bricks.  Their latest is called “Ordinary,” and we believe the band is anything but.  Check them out and let us know what you think.

Next is the latest from Blue Élan Records artist Amy Wilcox.  Her single is called “Somebody,” and is the second single from her forthcoming EP West.  We can’t wait to hear the rest.

Our third single this week is “Dancing” from Basement Revolver, Ontario, Canada, and we really like this gritty indie rock track.

Our fourth single this week is from Amy Stroup, who was born in Boston and raised in Abilene, Texas.  It’s called “Wild Nights,” and we love it.  What do you think?

Our final single this week is from the amazing R&B/alt pop voice of Thomas Graff.  It’s called “Make it Easy,” and we think that it accurately describes this artist’s future in the business.  Enjoy the groove.

NEW MUSIC VIDEOS

Long time indie giant Greg Laswell is finally releasing a new album on September 21.  The first single from it is called “Royal Empress,” and it was debuted by Los Angeles tastemaker Nic Harcourt  (KCRW) on August 14.  Here’s the lyric video for the song, which we simply love since it reminds us of vintage Springsteen.

Next up is the latest from Satellite Citi, which we introduced to you last year.  The song is entitled “Collide” and that’s what is going to happen soon when the world finds out about this amazing rock band with a lead singer that not only plays drums, but can also compete with Amy Lee.  Enjoy this one!

Our third video this week is from Tim Burlingame and Kathrin Shorr, also known as Sweet Talk Radio.  We really love this beautiful video for “Blue,” and think you will too.

Our next video is “Running” from Daniel Ellsworth and The Great Lakes.  This one has such a chill vibe that we think it is perfect for your Monday.

Time for our final video this week.  We’re closing out without another chill tune from Falcon Jane.  Here’s “Ginger Ale.”  Are you thirsty yet?

Sonia Rao reaches out to her fans with her latest effort

“I wanted the world to know my song, and now I sing for you.”  So begins the chorus of “I Wanted the World,” the opening track for Sonia Rao’s latest release, Meet Them at the Door.  This CD was created out of the generosity of her fans through Rao’s recent Indigogo offering, and Rao is quick to give them all the credit for her successful campaign.

Rao wrote all the songs on her latest CD, her first full length effort since 2011, and the personal attention shows in every note.  Produced, engineered and mixed by Alex Wong, the album is also skillfully mastered by Brian Malouf.   Wong also plays keys on the disc, as well as drums, percussion, programming, synth harmonium, guitar and bass, while Melodie Nicole adds her expressive cello to the mix.

Although Rao used Eleanore Denig for the violin parts on the record, she performs them herself in her live shows, as well as playing keys.  Rao has been on tour for the past two months, opening with a sold out show at Rockwell Music Hall in her native New York, and has only a couple of shows left in Irving, Texas on October 20 and Dallas Texas on October 22, before her TedX performance in Los Angeles on December 2.

Her vocals soar, and her lyrics are truly heartfelt.  Rao never forgets why she is doing what she’s doing – as reflected in that opening number, and in the fifth track, “Minneapolis.”

Every song is powerful, and the entire album is a thank you card that Rao has crafted for her fans.  Her appreciation for the people that love her music and have supported her is evident in every note of the album, resulting in a masterpiece of love that flows from one song to the next.   It is impossible to listen to her and not be enveloped in this love, creating a sense of thankfulness and hope that Rao passes on to the listener.

She closes Meet Them at the Door with the promise that “it gets better if you’ll just stick around.”   After listening to this amazing album, we believe that is just what her fans will do.

This album is one of the best of 2016, and truly belongs in the music library of everyone who loves good music.  It is a testament to the power of music to convey emotional support, and is worthy of your attention.  Rao loves and respects her fans, and it shows throughout the album.  On behalf of her fans, Indie Voice wants to take this opportunity to thank Rao for her beautiful gift.
